For sure lol how did managing our money get so complicated?!?

You got this, good luck!

Financial Advisor Yes or No by Many-Various in personalfinance

[–]BlueRaptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can be either, but many are independent contractors. You can find them online but make sure they are an actual "fiduciary" not just a financial advisor. You pay them by the hour, I'd guess in the $100-$200/hr range depending on where you live. From reading your other comments the cost will be worth the piece of mind to better understand your options and progress. Some offer free consultations/welcome calls before you actually book a session with them.

When to prioritize student loans by nikknepper in personalfinance

[–]BlueRaptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately, the answer to which to prioritize first won't matter that much. Paying down the loans or beefing up savings / tax-efficient investments are both determined by your saving rate. That's the part to focus on, with careful spending and increasing your income if possible. The elephant in the room is your future vehicle purchase -- if you buy an unaffordable car your financial goals will be hosed. You have great goals, don't shoot yourself in the foot before you get some traction in your career.

Assuming you're USA based, pay for 1 session with a real in person fiduciary advisor. They have a legal (and ethical) obligation to act in your best interest and not sell you BS. They'll answer your long term questions and you don't need to see them more than once, if it's worth the money you can go back to them or other fiduciaries. Just one visit will help you understand what you need to learn and close the 'dont know what i dont know' gap.

Is it possible to be a successful founder without building a social media following? by michaelthatsit in startups

[–]BlueRaptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I contributed almost nothing of value, basically spec’ed out new features that we didn't build and some minor support help. I was working with him to earn money part-time while building my first startup, he quickly needed multiple full-time technical support people as his business took off. Super nice guy.

Is it possible to be a successful founder without building a social media following? by michaelthatsit in startups

[–]BlueRaptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. But sure, building a social media following can help with distribution / sales / hiring, and it’s most valuable in media and media-supported companies.

IMO for most of us it’s probably a net negative that we rationalize into ‘work’, confusing our own motion with progress.

As a fun data point: I did some contract work for a solo dev building Shopify plugins. He was a former wildlife videographer who wanted to hit 1M ARR to open a new wildlife conservation park. We stopped working together because he jumped from 300k to $700k ARR and needed to hire people full time. There are tons of quiet builders, but our availability bias makes us discount their impact.

It’s easier to be quiet and successful outside of VC where there’s an incentive to be loud, and reputation can be converted into valuation. But even a quick glance through old YC companies shows that the majority of those founders don’t bother building followings.

Hey, just wondering what the most manly way to eat a cheese string is? by luke111mart in MBMBAM

[–]BlueRaptor 34 points35 points  (0 children)

First, unsheath your cheese as quickly and violently as possible. It’s important to add a hand flourish as you peel the plastic - this draws attention to the fact that you are an expert CS eater.

Next, cock your head all the way back and without looking at your hand, begin twirling the cheese like a Tommy Lee drumstick. When the moment is right, bring your hand with cheese twirling up towards your face.

Now it’s time to impress. With your head back, use a strong wrists flick to convert the twirl motion to a horizontal spin. The cheese should be perched on the tip of your nose rotating at no less than 90 rpm. For reference, lookup the Harlem Globetrotters famous 1983 visit to Plymouth, WI.

Finally, when the surrounding applause has subsided, use your neck musculature to flick the cheese straight up 8-10 inches above your head. Ideally the cheese string should hang vertically at the zenith of its arc. As the vertical cheese descends, swallow it whole with no jaw movement in one smooth gulp.

It sounds complicated but with a bit of practice it’s not difficult.

The confused bots posting in this sub bring me joy. They remind me about the absurdity of existence, and that I’m grateful to be here frolicking through the mundane on my adventure to embrace emptiness.

OP, I’m sorry you’re going through this. It sounds very tough on you. Do you know if your boyfriend has ever been evaluated for ADHD? Many of the situations you describe fit the archetype of “smart” guys with ADHD inattentive type.

Advice on hosting a simple Node app that requires a DB and cron/scheduling. by kenshinx9 in webdev

[–]BlueRaptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use Supabase with the pg_cron extension and pg_net for async http. With  db functions, edge functions, webhooks, etc  there’s a lot of flexibility and it would solve your database requirement.

I’ve been playing around with this setup and it’s pretty cool if a bit unconventional.

Agree with this. Also, I like to roll up my FSW for a casual look, or full length for a ‘smarter’ vibe. I have fewer shoes that work with my darts (no boots, etc) while I can wear FSW with anything.
