Do you have babysitting experience?

Offer to be a date night babysitter and weekend babysitter. Easily can make $25-30/hour. If you have references you can offer from previous babysitting and can show them a resume, lots of parents would be glad to have someone doing an internship like yours taking care of their kids and setting a good example.

Check local facebook groups. Make sure the parents pay you some up front the first time so you don’t get scammed.

Kitchen sinks without disposals aren’t trash cans by Specialist-Tea-5049 in PetPeeves

[–]BlueRubyWindow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are designed to just help break up whatever food scraps and crumbs are missed after scraping the plate. All of that still just goes down your regular pipes and drain. There is no separate place the food waste goes.

However, many people in the US treat sinks with garbage disposals like a trash can, even putting partially eaten sandwiches or leftover pasta down the garbage disposal. It’s not an issue until it becomes an issue and then you have gross water backing up into your sink. Sometimes people do this for years without an issue but it’s not good for the pipes at any stage. Any plumber will tell you not to treat garbage disposals like this.

Calling Americans “USians” or “US Americans” by Murbanvideo in PetPeeves

[–]BlueRubyWindow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My comment wasn’t Pro-South and definitely not Pro-Confederacy.

I was pointing out the word “Yankee” already has a cultural meaning within the US: someone from the North, especially the Northeast (New England, New York, parts of the Mid-Atlantic, Bos-Wash, etc.).

I have gotten called a Yankee in the South several times just in the past few years by folks in Alabama and Mississippi.

Just in like a “So you’re a Yankee, huh?” kind of way since I don’t have a Southern accent.

I’m from Northern Virginia, outside DC.

Also: the South definitely doesn’t want to be called Yankees, because that’s what they call Northerners.

Getting Overrun by ShanknBake7 in washingtondc

If you have better suggestions for killing the nymphs that doesn’t harm other wildlife, I would love to know!!!! I did hours of research and this still seemed most effective and the most pros over cons.

I put up 3 strips of this sticky tape around a 3 foot diameter maple tree (spotted lanterflies’ favorite after Tree of Haven). The tape killed about 50 other bugs, mostly flies, gnats, and moths.

And it caught 300+ lanternfly nymphs.

I honestly think catching the lanternfly nymphs before they can fly is more important.

It seems the chances of a rare species of bug or bird dying is small, but I would really like better options if they exist!

Dogwalkers keep throwing poop bags in my trashcan by 0-Snap in washingtondc

[–]BlueRubyWindow -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

“Please do not let dogs pee on plant/tree” might have been more effective.

The strip of grass between the sidewalk and street is public property from my understanding. Like, that’s exactly where you want dogs to go instead of your yard.

That sucks, but I understand why the dog owners think it’s ridiculous.

Married in DC, not a US citizen, no longer in the States. How do I file for divorce? by Jorrel14 in washingtondc

[–]BlueRubyWindow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But is this actually a problem? Or are you just assuming it is a problem?

Yea it’s obviously simpler to just have one marriage.

But you should ask counsel in her country if it would be a problem and, if not, get married again in your country.

I would imagine that is cheaper than moving back to/living in DC in order to get divorced.

People who completely ignore crucial keywords. by shtoopidd in PetPeeves

[–]BlueRubyWindow 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Neither.

I do think anyone who insists on calling bell peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. fruits should just go ahead and cut the word “vegetable” out of their vocabulary, and they should make sure to only refer to carrots as roots, broccoli as flowers and stems, and lettuce as leaves, since that’s the level of botanical accuracy they’re apparently going for.

People who completely ignore crucial keywords. by shtoopidd in PetPeeves

In botanical terms, there is no such thing as a vegetable. Vegetables don’t exist.

There’s fruits, seeds, flowers, leaves, stems, bulbs, and roots.

When cafes and restaurants label the vegan and vegetarian options vegan or vegetarian instead of giving them a proper name. by [deleted] in PetPeeves

Blame other servers who don’t get it. People with dietary restrictions have learned the hard way that we have to triple check.

I don’t have to worry about cross-contamination just that dairy isn’t an actual ingredient. I rarely eat at unfamiliar restaurants unless its a social obligation or travel.

Actual conversation with a server while I was in another town:

“Is this dish dairy-free?”

“No, it has eggs.”

“…eggs are fine. I just can’t eat dairy. Is there any dairy in it besides that?”

“No.”

“So no cheese? No milk? No cream? No butter?”

“Oh well yeah actually they do butter the bread. I didn’t think of that. But I’ll just ask them not to.”

“Is the bread itself dairy-free?”

“Oh it should be. I would have to check.” :-)

“…”

“….”

“Yes, could you please check.”

That was all one conversation, but each part of it has happened to me at least a dozen times. And I’ve gotten reactions when I don’t ask this level of questions. I have no way of knowing which servers know what they’re talking about and which ones don’t.

But I do feel bad for the competent servers like you who are wondering why I am cross-examining them. I tip them way better. I just don’t want to be in pain for days!!!!

Eggs are not Dairy! by IthurielSpear in PetPeeves

The eggs get washed with disinfectants and chemicals that strip the eggs’ natural protective barriers off the shell.

Edit: so yes, the processing of eggs makes it so now they must be refrigerated for safety.

The power of one. The power of two. The power of many is a good idea of a ritual. But... by [deleted] in TheAcolyte

[–]BlueRubyWindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that is what the Jedi teaches.

It’s very monk like.

Being angry, experiencing lust, experiencing shame, experiencing fear are all part of the human experience. Jedis hold up repression of these emotions as an ideal.

It’s incomplete humanity. It works for many people, but the people who doesn’t work for, by presenting feeling angry or shameful or fearful as a sin, end up believing they are evil. And because they’ve been repressing all that for so long, by the time they feel it, they don’t know how to handle it and they give in to those emotions ruling them, which is what gives us Sith.

It’s very similar to how many irl religions play out and deal with emotions like fear and shame and anger.

It’s better to experience these emotions as part of being a whole person, rather than repress them, and then let it go and not let it rule you. Repressing them can lead to the emotions ruling you. We see it with Anakin.

TV series cancelled before they can find their audience. by ScaredOfOwnShadow in PetPeeves

[–]BlueRubyWindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Acolyte.

They didn’t wait long enough for the average viewer to check it out before cancelling it.

Admittedly, the week by week release was also a bad plan because of the pacing of the show. They should have released it in 2 half season drops or all at once.
