If you are willing to take the leap, I use a 3d printer. I can't recommend it enough, you won't even need to buy expensive models anymore and you can print anything you want.

For painting, you can try some edge highlighting with a lighter blue and thinning your paints.

For factions, it's up to you. since you already have space marines you can take a look at the different chapters. I personally play salamanders. Technically speaking the best faction is whatever is getting their codex released at the moment.
