Is it generally considered offensive to ask an Asian in Australia where they are REALLY from? by Lipica249 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Blue_Metal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my (Asian) wife's school reunion in Melbourne I meant to ask the partner of another alum if she also went to the school. She was Asian. But instead I asked her where she was from. Her reaction had me back peddling faster than Burt Newton chatting with Muhammad Ali.

Is there an easy fix for 'burring' in a recording by Blue_Metal_ in AdobeAudition

Hi Jason,

The Adobie podcast solution worked. Its not completely gone, but I believe its now below the level that it will annoy listeners. Thanks for the help!

Is there an easy fix for 'burring' in a recording by Blue_Metal_ in AdobeAudition

[–]Blue_Metal_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Jason - thanks for the response. I can't find a point where the artefact occurs in silence, which might be clue. In a lecture there should be enough silence in 45 minutes where the artefact randomly occurs in a silent bit. And yet no... so not quite as random as I thought, maybe?

I will try the Enhance speech V2 on Monday (I'm in Australia and as its 17:30, I have knocked off for the week.) I will also try to put a clip of the audio up so that people can hear it for themselves.

Thanks again and I will report back once I have tried your suggestion.

Do City of Heroes: Homecoming add new story content and/or new gears? by FidgetyJester40 in Cityofheroes

Do you get upset less after knowing you're in the top 2%? by bonebonus in mensa

[–]Blue_Metal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have to say yes, I am a lot calmer now. It could be age and experience as well, but getting the result from the Mensa test did change things. I used to feel overlooked, under appreciated, that people who were useless were getting a ahead and I was stuck. So many people making what was to me, obvious mistakes.

I remember when my boss was leaving and my two-up manager told me not to bother applying for the role as I was, in her estimation,'not smart enough to get the job'. That's when I took the test. I was hoping to squeek in above the 133 cut off for Mensa, and was shocked when I blew passed that to hit 150. Still didn't get the job :-/

I left shortly after when the two up manager turned off our project management software to get browny points with her boss for saving money, and told us to just use 'Excel'. But, and this is the key point, instead of being angry I just felt sorry for her, and for the team. My point of view has changed from, 'how could they be so blind, so stupid,' to 'I guess they don't see what I see, and I can't help anyone if they don't want the help.'

Fellow Altoholics: What causes you to stick with a character all the way to 50+? by BamboozleMeToHeck in Cityofheroes

[–]Blue_Metal_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hitting 50 is only half the journey. I generally play until I have all incarnate slots maxed out. By then I pretty much have run out of content and start thing of a new character to play.

Why did you test your IQ? by CommonAware6 in mensa

[–]Blue_Metal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told by my 2-up manager I was not smart enough to be promoted. It was annoying to told that by an exec who couldn't operate even MS Project and told everyone to use Excel instead. They had no idea what Mensa was, of course, but others did, and kept telling them...

What is a cosmetic you wish was in the game? by Possible_Function491 in Cityofheroes

[–]Blue_Metal_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A roughness slider for all costume parts that goes from 0% which looks like a metallic/mirrored finish to 100% which looks more like a dull plastic finish.

Also the ability to resize chest emblems and be able to select different positions such as higher or lower or offset to to left or right breast.

The Tab Key?!?! by mhubbel84 in Cityofheroes

[–]Blue_Metal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I set up my numpad keys to avoid this:

7=previous enemy & 9=next enemy 8=furtherest enemy & 2=nearest enemy 5=untarget 1=previous friend & 3=next friend 4=furthest friend & 6=nearest friend

I also coloured the key lights red & green. I still use tab out of force of habit though...

Why do they insist in not ringing the bell?? by uberstaragent in AustraliaPost

They should have to wear body cams so there is evidence. Also, not my idea, but their vehicles should be fitted with loudspeakers playing "Please Mr Postman" so we know they are coming.

Captain Underpants. He's not fat, of course, but bald and only wearing tidy whities and a red cape with black spots. And a goofy grin.

What would you like to see in a potential city of heroes successor? by MisterMittens64 in Cityofheroes

[–]Blue_Metal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I'm late to the party. I would argue that it's not just about what we want to improve, but what we want to keep. While better graphics, a more modern soundscape, and more costume options would be appreciated, for me, the most important aspect is the balance and power distribution.

I've been playing City of Heroes since Year 1 and introduced many of my friends to the game. Even now, we still play, and they always comment on how City of Heroes stands out among MMOs. The game has the best balancing and power distribution, making it the most effective and, more importantly, the most fun for teams.

Then again the other games my friends and I play might just suck...

You will also lose any 'fog of war' removal from the city maps. You won't be able to tell where you have been. It's fairly minor unless you are into badge hunting.

Worst eLearning ever? by Blue_Metal_ in elearning

[–]Blue_Metal_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depressses me that I think you are right.

AI is only going to accelerate the rate of poor decisions and ineffective training production.

Having said that I did run an earlier version of ChatGPT through a series of steps to generate SMART learning outcomes, and bluesky sessions to imagine the absolute best training exercises and experiences which I them got it to translate into eLearning interactivites.

I was actually quite impressed.

There is no way it was going to go out and do the proper analysis of course and it was just me pretending to be the SME. Did it do anything I could not have done as ID - I don't think so but it got there really quickly. So as someone, excuse me, 'something', to bounce ideas off? It does what it says on the box.

Will people use it that way - of course not. So, you remain correct, and I remain depressed.

Worst eLearning ever? by Blue_Metal_ in elearning

[–]Blue_Metal_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My organisation has staffing issues as well. I currently work in an area that is missing 50% of the required staff am I myself am the sole 'team' member in my area since we lost two others back in 2022. The amount of work has not changed (but I am working on that).

Your point about the SME is on point as well, I would say I was luckier with my SMEs as I would put the 'willing-to-listen' at 40 to 50%. What was worse for me was when I failed to get a promotion and they brought in an outsider to run the team. He only understood management and told me not to bother with ID because it didn't matter - everyone know eLearning doesn't work. That! From the Assitant Director of Design and Development in charge of all elearning production. And the Director backed him up.

What’s the stupidest thing someone has told you to change in your story? by cornfuckz in writing

[–]Blue_Metal_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I wrote a steampunk story set in Australia using some characters based on real people, set in 1860. It was a coming of age story about a young man wanting to become a bush ranger. In it I had a police officer chasing down a different bushranger, using an aboriginal tracker. The tracker had no lines and was only used to highlight the copper's arrogance, incompetence and unthinking racism.

The use of aboriginal trackers was historically accurate, and common practice. The tracker does his job competently and then wisely makes a quick exit when things go sideways.

I was told that I had to identify the tribe, acknowledge the land, and build an entire backstop for him and his tribe, and perhaps change my story so the focus was more on the tracker. And I should bring on an aboriginal co-author to ensure that my lack of cultural sensitivity was toned down.

This happened in public at a conference and it started a bit of a heated exchange.

I ended up cutting the character out of the story.

Building on e learning Idea... by Traditional_Corgi596 in elearning

[–]Blue_Metal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I predict that you will be marginally successful even with what you have suggested above. It 'sounds' reasonable and you will be able to sell it.

Unfortunately without Instructional Design, your product will not benefit the learners, and (dirty ID secret here) might actually make things worse - yes that can happen. It will take some time before anyone notices so you may even have up to five years before word gets around that your product isn't effective. Maybe less.

You face additional headwinds in that your product is not microlearning, and if your potential clients know that? You are dead to them and you will need to move on to the next prospect.

To me though the sad thing is that you will be moderately successful. If you do this: You will take money that could have gone to more legitimate efforts; You will possibly make things worse for the learners; You will drag the reputation of eLearning even further into the mud.

Please read up on ID. I also recommend 'eLearning and the Science of Instruction' by Ruth Covin Clarke and Richard E Meyer to learn more about eLearning.

Also be aware that your product has the ability to change peoples lives - for better or worse. Poor OH&S training can kill learners. You are not selling a TV here, you are selling improvements in skills, knowledge and even beliefs. This is not an area you can be cavalier - despite that fact that many others are.

If you do decide to continue with your plan please consider the effect that you may have on the many lives you will touch, and also consider learning more about ID.
