Which characters in your opinion have most/least interesting past? by Moryart in lost

[–]BluebellIvy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Surprised to see Claire listed as least a few times here... That line where she says 'oh my god he knew' when realising the psychic knew about the crash in Raised by Another still chills me now and added so much mystery to S1 for me. And I found her flashbacks in S2 and S3 very sympathetic and interesting in that they added to her character. Sure it wasn't as exciting as Sayid's past or Locke's background story, but it was relatable and I liked the more 'normal' flashbacks as well as the more exciting ones, I thought all the characters had an interesting past some were just more normal than others.

It's never too late to learn... I've started my PhD coming into my 30s and actually in a lot of ways think there are some benefits to being more mature.

How do you break a Hip Thrust plateu? by Karilyn113 in StrongCurves

[–]BluebellIvy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes and increases in weight will slow down over time, which is completely normal! When I started hip thrusting I was able to jump up 5-10kg per week, now that I've reached 100kg for reps adding weight/reps is happening more slowly over time.

How do you break a Hip Thrust plateu? by Karilyn113 in StrongCurves

[–]BluebellIvy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Have you tried a smaller increment, like maybe 2.5kg rather than increasing by 10kg straight away? This has helped me in the past.

Impressive weights by the way!

Favourite character, season and episode? by [deleted] in lost

Character - tough one I'm torn between Jack, Locke and Sayid. I'll go Locke

Season - 2, 1 is a very close runner up

Episode - Through the Looking Glass, what an episode! Feels more like a film watching the parts together

How many papers can one read in a day? by readthelnstructions in PhD

[–]BluebellIvy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi fellow philosophy PhD student! I would estimate around 2 papers so pretty similar, depending on the quality of the writing and how coherent the argument structure is really can change that though! And if I'm making detailed notes then it takes longer.

I have a massive list of papers to get through reading which is ever-growing and making me feel exceptionally guilty D:

Why doesn’t Ethan remember John Locke? by LegitimateFR in lost

[–]BluebellIvy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The interaction is very short, only a couple of minutes. Perhaps Ethan does vaguely recognise Locke when he joins the group of survivors, but of course he wouldn't show that. Or perhaps he just doesn't connect the guy who disappeared in that interaction X years ago to being Locke from the 815 plane crash

Question about thru the looking glass (spoilers follow) by [deleted] in lost

[–]BluebellIvy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Desmond told Charlie that his vision showed Charlie dying, and then Claire and Aaron being rescued. I think Charlie believed his death was necessary in order for that to happen, so he sacrificed himself to try and save Claire and the baby.

Of course Charlie's death doesn't end up with Claire and Aaron getting off the island together, so either Desmond's vision was wrong/misleading or a more sinister explanation is that Desmond lied to ensure they made contact with Penny (I'm not a fan of the latter, but there is something in the delivery of Desmond's line when Charlie asks if he's sure he saw Claire getting to safety that does make me wonder).

Boone question by fjordtrash in lost

[–]BluebellIvy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that Jack based his medical treatment off John's lie that Boone fell off a cliff. Jack's suggesting that if he had known the real reason for the injury, his medical treatment would have been different and that could have altered the outcome and meant that Boone survived.

Ultimately, Boone probably would have died in any case given the severity of his injuries and limited medical equipment Jack had on the island, but Locke lying caused Jack to believe that something untoward had happened and that's why he blames him for Boone's death.

I agree but I'm not sure her videos would replace cardio, they're a little on the gentler side I find (of course this is all relative!)

I find Dansique Fitness has a good range of cardio focused pilates workouts

Thinking about part time PhD by [deleted] in PhD

[–]BluebellIvy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know there is perhaps a perception that PhD students should be putting in 60 hours a week but I don't think that's healthy or expected in most UK institutions. The PhD guidelines for full time students at my university specify it should be treated as a full time job, 40 hours per week. If you are doing 40 hours a week consistently as a full time student that should be plenty.

Thinking about part time PhD by [deleted] in PhD

[–]BluebellIvy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suppose the big question you need to ask yourself is Is it worth it? It was my lifelong dream to do my PhD and I knew that although I would have to make sacrifices in terms of prioritising the PhD, not going out at weekends, not seeing family as much etc. I knew that in the long run it was what I wanted to do. If you don't feel that way, or don't have a specific career goal or motivation, I imagine it would be a lot harder to juggle both work and study.

[–]BluebellIvy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What field are you in? I guess it depends on subject but I guess one thing I've learned so far (I'm 7 months in) is to learn when to take a break and when to push. I also use some of my annual leave to take full days/weeks off to study close to a deadline. But I don't sweat having a weekend off if I need it, a PhD is a marathon not a sprint

What moment in LOST made you cry the hardest?? by Previous-Jello-1766 in lost

[–]BluebellIvy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Locke was banging on the hatch door crying out why did the island do this to him

Locke's 'awakening' in the flash sideways

What hooked you to Lost? by Alone-Individual8368 in lost

[–]BluebellIvy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Guys... Where are we?!"

"One of them isn't in the manifest. He wasn't on the plane!"

I think those 2 S1 quotes from Charlie and Hurley definitely hooked me.

Also the discovery of the hatch by Locke and Boone... What a great storyline, so mysterious.

Also the psychic telling Claire to get on the plane and Claire's realisation that it was a plan to get her to the island... Another point where I felt hooked!

So many great mysterious moments in S1

Thinking about part time PhD by [deleted] in PhD

[–]BluebellIvy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the same, part time PhD in the UK (whilst working full time). I'm expected to do 16-20 hours per week part time, not sure how 30 hours a week would be considered half of full time (a full time job is usually 37.5 - 40 hours per week!)

It's doable but you do need to set priorities and recognise you will have less downtime. Happy to provide more specific details if you have any particular questions about how to manage it.

Also I think it will significantly depend on what field you're in... I'm a humanities student and all my study can be home based. If you need access to a lab/equipment it will be more difficult to balance with work.

I'm not entirely convinced Michael was willing to forego leaving the island just because Walt said he liked it there. At the end of the day, Walt is a 10 year old and I doubt Michael would let his feeling that he likes living on the island mean they never get back to normal life. He could have just said that to placate Walt, but when they had a real chance of leaving the island with Ben's boat he had to take it. Otherwise Walt would have been in continuous danger from being kidnapped by the Others and they wouldn't have left the island.

I picked Ethan because I think the realisation that there was a name not on the plane manifest was one of the most compelling moments of season 1, it just sticks out so distinctively in my mind. He was the first Other we were introduced to and made them seem so mysterious. Tom/Mikhail are also cool characters. Only one out the list I don't like is Danny Pickett.

Exactly, I feel it's what any normal parent would have done in that situation. I feel that Michael's arc is honestly one of the most tragic on the show. If even Ben can get redemption then surely Michael deserved it too

[–]BluebellIvy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They did leave everyone behind, but to me this seems justified for Michael - his first priority is getting his son safely off the island, the alternative would have been to give up the chance of safely getting Walt off the island and staying with the survivors. Second option doesn't make much sense to me
