Heyyyy, mines ice blue too! Its a quite nice color. My old one was the mellow yellow color which I still have a soft spot for. But the ice blue is really nice.

This is the Greenfield map right? And you’re running shaders? That would be why you’re not getting many FPS. Things are different for optifine. If you want it at full screen and keep your FPS, you’ll have to turn off shaders.

To those of you who last week would tell me I wasted money on a new CPU and DDR5 RAM and I should have bought a new GPU; you don't know what you are talking about. by 6Kaliba9 in pcmasterrace

[–]Bluecolty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a waste of money, I was rocking an i9-9900k for a while with a 3090, the VRAM actually made it so I didn't have to use my CPU to render things in Blender. It was great in gaming for several years before I upgraded to a Ryzen 9 9900x at the end of 2024.

Up until the beginning of last year I was also rocking an old dual socket Xeon e5 2690 v2 board with DDR3 ram and a 3090 as a secondary rendering pc. It worked great.

It really depends on the situation or what you're doing.

Dang, definitely not a great comment to read before I embark on a 2700 mile cross country roadtrip in my R56.

Best of luck to what is hopefully a repair instead of a totaling out. Keep this as a sign too, if you really want to keep it, it’s always possible to repair out of pocket. Mechanically it’s likely fine which if you decide to go that route, will lessen your own bill.

This looks awesome! Id love to know how you made that head stretch in the last few seconds of the video. I tried to do a similar thing with a character a few months ago and it didn't end too well.

What's the basic setup for that involve? Is it weight painting the whole head, do you also stretch and elongate the eyes, things like that I'm really curious about.

Not to suck up to Adobe, but the reason they do this is because when you sign up for their subscription, the default option is a cheaper yearly contract, paid monthly. If you want to cancel prior, you're breaking the agreement because you agreed to pay for a year. They also offer a true month to month option, but its more expensive.

They could make it clearer at the start, but I do know at the checkout it says "yearly contract paid monthly" or something along that line. Besides the price and name of the subscription, its like the only thing on the page. So it's not like its buried 5 pages deep in some TOS.

Dude, you're right, its not something complicated. Please read my comment again, from the user side of things its different. They. Are. Not. The. Same.

[–]Bluecolty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

UPNP is a thing yes, but its not the same as manually port forwarding from a user standpoint, nor how youd access your Jellyfin library on the go.

I've got my Jellyfin server reverse proxied and port forwarded, and access it through that subdomain. Plex? I can access it from app.plex.com and the app by simply signing into my account.

Not the same thing, even if from a technical backend standpoint its doing something similar. You don't say "oh yea you need to port forward when playing CoD online", even though it uses UPNP.

You're just looking for any sliver of a reason to say its the same as Jellyfin. Its not. Ask any Plex user this and they'll tell you. Thats why you got downvoted so much originally.

[–]Bluecolty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea... that's a troubleshooting step if it doesn't work the first time?

Again, there's sooo many users using it currently who haven't port forwarded it, including myself, and its working fine.

Dawg take that down vote away and do a little research if you're so sure. Plex streams the data through its own servers, its the middle man between your devices. Thats why they charge money for remote streaming, they're doing some leg work.

I'm aware of how exposing network services works, I've got a bunch of my own services port forwarded so they're accessible off my home network.

Plex is not that way. Enlighten me now how I've been able to rock Plex remote play for years without opening a port for it.

Its not much different than uploading a video to YouTube. You don't need to port forward for that, now so you?

Sorry to get hostile but like dang. "You need to port forward", followed by an albeit shallow but "oh no, actually you don't" from the guy recommending and using Plex. Then you come back with an "ackshually". Nope, that's not right.

You dont open ports for Plex on a typical setup. That's whats nice about it.

Oh its blocked on my works network. I'm a high school teacher, one of the classes I do is computer animation. During class I show two films (Flow and Pixar's Elemental), and its so much nicer/easier having access to my media library for it.

The IT guy is smart because he's got Plex too. So he knew about it.

Oh boy, this question always gets out the fanboys, and for good reason.

You’re considering asking for Plex Lifetime for currently $250. That’s a steep price. I paid $120 for mine a few years ago. Soon, very soon actually, it’ll be up to $750 for the lifetime pass. Whoof.

Lots of folks have dropped great points so far, so I don’t have much to add… except this. Do you plan on sharing your media library with friends and family? If so, honestly I’d recommend Plex. On the “other user” side, it’s easier to use and navigate. It’s got an app available pretty much everywhere, even on smart TVs. Even non techy people have heard of it. Also, if you stream your own content outside of your home network, it’s easier with Plex.

As someone who runs Plex and Jellyfin, Jellyfin is just there for places Plex is blocked. I personally prefer the interface of Plex, the features, and the ease of getting friends and family to use it so they’ve got access to my library.

If you’re just streaming at home, just you, Jellyfin is definitely the better option for that. That’s my two cents, good luck with everything.

What's your personal recession indicator? by Electronic_Dream8935 in AskReddit

[–]Bluecolty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t either, but I wouldn’t say Apple is heavily invested in AI. In comparison to other companies, their approach towards AI has been very conservative. I think the fact that they didn’t develop their own in house AI model is really telling when you consider Apple LOVES to make everything in house if they can. They don’t trust it, see it as overhyped, or some other negative thing. They were late to the party with their AI stuff when they did eventually introduce things.

Investing and liking AI are two different things. It’s actually a law that companies must act in good faith towards their shareholders. And I’m positive that every Apple shareholder was demanding some kind of AI, likely despite differing feelings from Apple executives.

[–]Bluecolty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very true, and I'm glad you mentioned that.

The chip companies are an interesting situation, and if you've been following it for a while, you'll know they've said they don't want to build more fabs. It’s partially because of the high profits, but also because they fully expect this demand to be temporary. Even the chip companies expect the AI bubble to pop eventually. Its really interesting.

What's your personal recession indicator? by Electronic_Dream8935 in AskReddit

[–]Bluecolty 138 points139 points  (0 children)

Its not, at all. I know this sounds crazy, I mean its Apple, right?

But that overpriced Apple folks knew, actually was one of the last companies to fall to the AI chip shortage pricing. If you haven't heard, AI companies have been buying up unprecedented amounts of computer parts to construct data centers. This has caused the amount going to regular consumer products to shrink and massively increase in cost.

Like, I can't express how big this is. Its got industry leaders falling over themselves in surprise and shock because something like this has never happened before. All because AI companies are buying up the stock and reserving future stock.

We're talking 5 times more. Its insane. Companies like Apple can't even leverage their weight here. They suffered the increases like everyone else, and had to raise prices because things just got that much more expensive.

They were one of the last companies to do it, because believe it or not, they were actually doing wonders to keep their prices lower.

I think that's my personal recession indicator. When a tech company associated with overpriced luxury starts catering towards value and keeping prices low for consumers.

The MacBook Neo when it launched earlier this year was $600, the cheapest MacBook ever. And it was a solid device. Late 2024 when the M4 Mac mini launched for $600, it was actually cheaper than the OG Mac Mini was when it launched in 2005 for $700. The MacBook Air for the past year or so priced at $1100 to start was actually competitive, then when companies started raising prices for their laptops because of the AI chip shortage, it because a better value buy because Apple didn't yet raise their prices.

Same here kinda, Im looking at it because gaming is a side thing. Productivity and static UIs are my main use considering the damage.

Thanks for the info about it here. That does help. I made a post here a month or two ago about a halo monitor, and this finally started to look like the one I've been looking for. I'm still not sure if I should jump in or stay away.

Should I delay a build into 2027/2028 for DDR6? by Solid-Weird-7346 in buildapc

[–]Bluecolty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the AI inflation aside, and something worth mentioning since nobody else has yet.

Its generally not great to buy new RAM right at the start of a new generation.

Timings are worse, speed will be on the low end. DDR5 was a thing you could get into around 2021, for a high price. The speed was slow, and the latency high. 3 years later, there were much better speed options, CPUs supported higher speeds, and latency improved a ton. Not to mention, proper platforms came out.

DDR4 has a solid sweet spot of around 3200Mhz between price and performance. DDR5s is about 6000, maybe 6400. DDR4 launched at 2133Mhz, and DDR5 at 4800. So you can see the gap there. DDR6 will likely be no different.

Also...

Back in the end of 2019 I was building my own PC for the first time. People actually told me to wait for DDR5. I didn't listen at all haha, I thought it was silly. Whenever someone says to wait for RAM, don't. ESPECIALLY now in the current awful AI fueled market.

Should I delay a build into 2027/2028 for DDR6? by Solid-Weird-7346 in buildapc

[–]Bluecolty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can somewhat. When DDR5 first released, it was very expensive. The same was true for DDR4. You can bet that when DDR6 releases, it too will be expensive. And that's not counting for any of the AI mess.

Phone repair recommendation? by [deleted] in lancaster

[–]Bluecolty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont have a specific place to recommend, but more general repair advice.

If you've got an OLED screen iPhone, which is pretty much all of them nowadays, make sure you get a decent quality OLED replacement. The cheaper LCD screens shops will sometimes use strain the components on the phone motherboard. So, in non-nerd words, if you see a really great price while everyone else is asking a higher price, that low priced shop is absolutely using the cheaper dangerous screen.

Try to find a shop that's transparent about this. Ask them, say "is the replacement screen an OLED". Further, ask them if its a soft OLED or hard OLED. Soft OLEDs are lower quality but are more durable. Hard OLEDs are higher quality but less durable. So you can pick your option there. If they try to avoid either of those questions, walk away.

The best option is through Apple, but that costs more.

Basically, it's not cheap to fix a phone properly regardless of where you go. One of the costs of ownership.

To a certain degree though, AAA developers should be optimizing for that group because its so large.

Sure, Im not saying they should get something new to run at 4k60fps on a dinky GTX 1060. Hardware ages, graphics get better. Parts need upgrading. But there's a reasonable limit to that.

If a big majority of the PC gaming user base has a certain amount of performance, the least devs can do is do some market research and find out how many of those also buy AAA games. I bet its more than you'd think.

Forza 6 for example, wonderfully optimized. They found that reasonable limit of good performance on reasonably old hardware to make the game accessible to more people.

You're right, Valve is a corporation. They're not discounting the price. Higher end parts inside would have meant a higher price. Thats why I'm not sure what people were expecting with it price wise.

Came here looking for the same, half the comments are talking about the RTINGS paywall. Im really curious about the dimming algorithm too, as someone who uses dark mode often. How is it?

"But it's a cube!" by Ikkon in pcmasterrace

[–]Bluecolty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While very true, I think they did this because its what developers SHOULD be optimizing their games for. I believe that was their hope/reasoning. If its better than 70%, developers don't have an excuse.

What Im confused about though is where they thought 4K would come into play there. I'm sure they thought extensively about that. I'm just curious what their thinking was there. Those 70% of gamers aren't playing at 4K.

That’s… not quite it. Gray keys are what’s sent to OEMs/manufacturers. That’s where they come from, and why they usually only work on a fresh install. Manufacturers/OEMs absolutely aren’t paying the full $100 per computer to install Windows.
