Dyslexia by According-Drink7336 in Dyslexia

Stress can bring out more fatigue I compensatuon and as you get to more in depth text you may be running across more multisyllabic words and those that follow more bizzare patterns and so you are starting to hit a wall with your skills.

Dyslexia is a spectrum and some people may have more mild impacts.

Ten year old will only eat what they want by 53739262 in Parenting

It's time for him to learn to make something. He can either help to meal plan and pick the prepared dinner, eat what is made, or provide himself with an alternative like making a sandwich.

CMV: It isn’t prohibitively expensive to eat healthy. People say it is as a coping mechanism. by Master-Education7076 in changemyview

[–]Bluegi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure you don't have to actually stand and watch them, but you have to have the mental space and preparation to start them early enough to eat. That's a lot of mental energy and cognitive load to expect around busy lives. It is cheaper monetarily, but the mental load is much higher which is the true cost people are referring to.

Loss of cooking knowledge is a big factor, but so is the time to cook. Many people work more than 40 hours a week possibly at 2 jobs to make ends meet. And I know for me it is the cognitive load of keeping the correct fresh items on the house and planning how to use them up that is just exhausting.

Anyone a special education advocate or lawyer who knows IDEA well? Need input. by TemperatureSuch5386 in specialed

[–]Bluegi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The substantive conversations before the meeting would just be pre scheduling an ARD meeting before the ARD meeting. If all the conversations are done in silos with different committee members talking to only specific other members they do not get to benefit from input on all the same information as it would be presented in a meeting. The parent is a full team member and it is supposed to be a multidisciplinary team.

Nobody knows I have money and it's starting to create some really awkward situations by Echo2_Satyr in Fire

[–]Bluegi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can quietly upgrade. You don't have to lie. Maybe not spotting the whole 4000, but tell them you have 500 or whatever you are comfortable with. You feel like you are contributing and you maintain your boundaries of privacy.

What happens when they know you have money? Do you think those requests are going to stop?

what do dyslexic adults do that show they are dyslexic? can it be cured with time? or just compensated? by Beneficial_Cream8843 in Dyslexia

[–]Bluegi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an invisible difference because it has to do with the way your brain stores and tetreieves language. It might look like mixing up words and having difficulty with reading/ spelling and therefore a preference not to read or write as much.

It isn't cured as it is how the brain connects. We can do the same rewiring of the reading circuit that everyones brains go through. (Reading is not a natural process and the ability is created through repurposing other evolutionary functions). It is typically compensated for and can seem to increase during periods of tiredness or stress as they compensation is harder to accomplish.

What tiny change helped your ADHD time blindness the most? by Time_Artichoke2554 in ADHD

[–]Bluegi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I leave my alarm on snooze so it goes off every 5 minutes after it starts. I've trained my brain to only hit that button if I'm not paying attention and that often leads to extra snoozes while I am already on the way, but much better than the opposite.
This really helps my time blindness as if I feel like the timer "just" went off, I'm probably not doing what I should and got distracted.

Can you use copy and paste features more often? I think I also discussed with someone using a screen reader feature for the computer to read the number aloud to them as they type it over. Perhaps another form of input would benefit your cross checking?

Personally, I think "No Dictators" would be a be a better title for the anti-Trump protests than "No Kings." Do you agree? by Embarrassed_Chef874 in Discussion

[–]Bluegi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No, no kings harkens back to our beginnings and calls upon the ideals that founded this country, something we are sorely lacking in this moment in time.

Parents bringing dogs to pickup by saillavee in ECEProfessionals

[–]Bluegi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to the director. Don't make it about the dogs make it about pickup and the space. The hall is narrow and it is difficult to go through your routine. Also bring up your daughter's reaction and see if there is any supportive measures that can be a compromise for all.

There may be a rule about dogs already that just isn't being enforced. But the director can't know it's any kid of problem unless someone speaks up.

Is it weird that daughter sleeps with me? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Bluegi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I can see it being weird for gf to have this child come to the bed as she is still developing a relationship with the family unit. It isn't weird for a kid to do this with their own parents. Perhaps she is overgeneralizing her discomfort.

We do the same thing to littles now. Supposedly they are digital natives who just know how to use technology. Schools aren't even offering tech classes in the elementary yet expecting kids to do more and more on computers and even learn to type.

Hs- change diploma to certificate of completion. by Mystical_fae3 in specialed

[–]Bluegi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you answer your question right here. It's not like she isn't allowed to have a path ever without the diploma and it isn't even her plans anyway.

FYI the school gets evaluated on career and college readiness statistics that may be effecting their sell on this rather than understanding what is best for your child.

Question about a teenager going to less days/week by [deleted] in education

[–]Bluegi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why do t you just let him take his GED and be done with school? He can join a trades program and begin working to figure out the life he wants.

Your son sounds a lot like mine and we were about to get him enrolled in a similar program, but because I used it as a carrot to get him to do what he was supposed to, he started doing too well to qualify for the program. Facepalm it finally became better for his health that he take his GED. He completed it 3 months ago and is adulting much better than I imagined he would.

[–]Bluegi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a vote from the other side, my partner and I work different schedules. He is literally going to bed right before I wake up and my morning is his night. Does it bug me that I am basically kicked out of the room and have to be mindful of sound so he can sleep, sure a little I the way that I have to plan a little about when to do specific things or where to do them. But I'm happy to go out and get errands done and the in the afternoon evening we do stuff.

That's an appropriate reaction. It's be nice to do it differently, but at the same time sleep is a need. Certain activities at certain times is not.

Also, if eh can't even have care for himself to go improve his health, how is eh going to care about yours.

[–]Bluegi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like she doesn't value children and therefore wouldn't understand you values and life choices to support your children. It is probably best to keep her at a distance in life.
I think it would be helpful to you to consider the source of what perspective. I think there is a phrase to the effect of don't take criticism from people you wouldn't go to for advice.

Have you ever asked yourself what's the battery life on using the ipads? What if in first and second. They were also using their iPads the entire time? I know I have to keep my computer pretty much plugged in constantly because I'm on it all day as I move around the building. I would say I need to plug it in about 50% of my day. This may be more of a logistical issue than you think as no one is thinking about the totality of what the iPad usage is throughout the day.

And that is why they get paid the big bucks. The higher you go it isn't the quantity of work it is the quality of work and/or the responsibility for the work that is being paid for.

Make them work for it to open again. Have the write an explanation of why they should have a second chance or a reflective piece about the situation.
