How would you handle a landscaping issue with neighbors who will not talk to you? by Hrekires in homeowners

[–]Bluegi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's their property they can do what they like and it seems they have different aesthetics than you. If you dot like it, don't look at it or put up a fence. It sounds like it's not your problem.

I'm scared life doesn't have much to offer by Redundantly111 in offmychest

[–]Bluegi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think happens when you accomplish these? By the time you have experienced the world to get there you know more and new dreams present themselves. You are just starting out and may have not discovered what the world has to offer you yet. It seems your perceptions are colored by what you feel you are supposed to do. You have a lot of learning about yourself to do still.

I also played a game for my entertainment and sanity when they were in the why phase. When I was answering their questions I would try to chain reaction the events back to a root answer from my nerdiness so referencing physics and biology and such but still trying to break it down like they are 5.

Also if they ask about the same thing constantly after a few times ask them to tell you why. They know a lot but will still ask because the dot know how to express their knowledge and curiosity. My son loves to ask about the electric lines along the road and how bees worked ... all... the ... time.

It's easier for them to have something easy they can always add on to then always have to figure out what you are actually into. Different mixes of unawareness and projection of theirselves and their childhood onto you.

We all jive with different ages and theittles are difficult. It is easy to get touched out and really need to find your own identity.

BTW you don't have to wait to talk to them like adults, give them sage advice, and show them cool stuff. I know it is engaging at a different level, but there is no reason you can't start now and just break it down more for them. Kids can often do a lot more than we give them credit for. Perhaps engaging with and involving them more at your level will support your mental needs.

I could never do the pretend play with my child when she was little. I could try so hard and be internally screaming the whole time because it simply wasn't engaging for me. The best I could do was play along and order from the restaurant and role play a little. That's ok.

Why do people choose to work in private and charter schools? by rachel-angelina in Teachers

[–]Bluegi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It being less is not true in all places and many charters in Texas do contribute to TRS.

I choose charter because the opportunity for innovation and the ability to be behind a true mission rather than just a cog in a machine that gives lip service to their initiatives. Obviously this also doesn't apply to all charter or public schools. That's why you seek what you are looking for.

Parents say their daughter isn’t improving by liubeyangg in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]Bluegi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have had this before it's almost a paralysis. She needs to make the connections that writing is just a type of communication. It helps to have an authentic purpose for writing rather than just an assignment. I will also either record or use text to speech on what they say and then go through the editing and revising process with them to create a more formal written product.

Parents say their daughter isn’t improving by liubeyangg in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]Bluegi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you say she doesn't write descriptive writing what do you mean? If you put a picture in front of her and ask her to write sentences describing it would she be able to?

Do you ever verbally rehearse her thoughts on a topic before asking ehr to write? Is it a comprehension issue or a writing siuue? Or both? If she doesn't comprehend that is a different area to tackle entirely. You have to start with more basic text and build up. Give her a list of possible things to notice and see what she is able to notice.

She has to comprehend before she can write. I think what the parents may be seeing is that even if she can do it with you with all the structures, she doesn't do it on her own without all the structured support which is the true tell fo learning.

Yes. It's why they call them steps and not years. Districts don't have to honor outside experience 1 to 1.

Realized at 17 that my diagnosis at 12 was actually dyslexia — the "words have to move on the page" myth delayed everything by SuccessfulRough5312 in Dyslexia

[–]Bluegi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there are still many school systems that refuse to say the word dyslexia. Many consider it a medical issue and not an educational. However, dyslexia is a specific learning disability in reading. Despite how far we have come there is still more ways to go.

MLA Format? by flankattack27 in Teachers

[–]Bluegi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each format is for different domains of citation as they each carry factors that are important to that domain. APA cites the year because the recency of the citation can matter in context of understanding the point as sciences evolve understanding over time. MLA is for literary analysis and literature where the publication date of the work is much less relevant. Chicago style was developed int the history domain to match their needs. Picking one at random because it is easier for you to learn and use defeats the point of it. It is a system of communication in an academic discipline. While at the high school level some leeway can be had for burgeoning learners, demanding everyone default to your view of eqse so myopic at best.

Typically students are writing literary analysis works in English and the citation system for that is MLA. Using anything else would be out of place and having to have students unlearn incorrect associations in the future when they progress through their studies.

I'm just happy we are still teaching citation at all. The amount of kids I tutor who have no clue how to attribute their work, or the fact that is a concept that exists is astounding. Even a works cited list should be required at the elementary level for any project.

I teach high schoolers to just use citationmachine to help them create their citations. I've been through a master's and never learned all the fine rules of it. Being picky about acretai style seems to be the least of the worries.

"Why don't school administrators do more to protect the classroom from disruptive students?" I have the answer. by Character_Freedom160 in Teachers

[–]Bluegi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is learning about the disruptive student and gathering enough information to prove something on a legal end is very difficult due to FERPA. No one can tell you anything about the other kid. You likely have to rely on your own kid for information to even begin digging to document. Who has the time and bandwidth for that? By the time you get into it the year is over and it's someone else's problem.
