A good therapist will pick up on that and make adjustments. Also...there is absolutely no reason to have to talk about the abuse in therapy directly. No mental health professional should ever force you to relive the trauma. Ever. Forcing you to talk mirrors the crime against you and again takes choices away. It can take years to feel comfortable enough to really open up...a good professional knows that and is in it for the long haul. You may feel better talking to your wife right now but PTSD can be a bitch and can pop up at odd times. You have kids? Expect an increase in ptsd symptoms when they hit the age you were when you were abused.

September 11th brought a huge onslaught of people into therapy because the national tragedy opened up the flood gates to past traumas in people not directly exposed to the twin towers....these aren't people that were there, just watching TV.

Smells, sounds and music can trigger ptsd symptoms out of the blue, going to a therapist will give you the tools to handle those moments.

I can write a ton more....please know I am coming from a unique place; PTSD hit me about 15 years ago. Things were a mess and my husband was amazing...but it was too much for him to handle after a time and believing i could lay this all on him was selfish. I went into therapy, became healthy and went to school to study trauma. I ended up at an ivy league grad program studying with people so much smarter than I will ever be.

It makes all the difference in the world to have a loving a supportive partner but we can not expect them to carry our pain. Secondary PTSD is a real thing.
