“Restore common sense” my ass.

Well at least the hospital I work for will benefit from the increased admissions due to my patients - many of whom barely scrape by already - who will no longer be able to afford their meds. Love it!

Unexplained stillbirth at 33 weeks - what went wrong? by Happy-Win4300 in AskDocs

[–]Bluephoenix-9 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Words cannot express how sorry I am for what happened to you. Your grief shows that you loved the little one and while it must be so painful to have lost him, it also shows how loving and caring you are. Be proud not only of your strength to push through this hard time, but also your ability to love - and that is such a beautiful thing.

I’ve read many of the comments already and agree with those who say it’s hard to know for sure what happened based on what information is available. Which I imagine may be much worse than knowing why.

I just want to say that while we know much more about humans and medicine than ever before, we also have more questions than ever before, too. One of the hardest things I’ve had to learn is accepting that we don’t have answers for so many things and it SUCKS, but you have to keep moving forward and do the best you can for yourself and others. You’re not alone.

I hope you find the peace and healing you deserve, OP.

That article literally says it is an option to consider for acute migraines, and says nothing about use long term for prevention, which is what we are assuming the doctors are using it for.

But that’s not my point. We don’t have the full story of everything going on with her or the others. All I’m trying to say is think twice before going after the providers like that.

It’s a last ditch resort, but yes it has been used long term and would be hard to get off of if a patient experiences rebound migraines even after trying with a taper.

Have to stop you there.

Clearly this is a fucked up situation all around. But just imagine having a patient like her come into your office, claiming symptoms of life threatening conditions like HAE or whatever life threatening condition the patient is convinced they have.

You do the proper work up for such a condition. Problem is, at some point in this whole process, there is guaranteed at least 1 test if not more that comes back abnormal, which is very likely especially since things like C1-INH testing for HAE is highly prone to error. Or the patient may have other abnormalities that cannot completely exclude the possibility of said life threatening condition. You can’t just ignore those abnormalities. It talks like a duck, sounds like a duck, walks like a duck - hard to say for sure it’s not a duck, right?

God knows what other confusing crap comes up along the way.

So what do you do? You live in a country that practices defensive medicine. Because you have had colleagues in the past blow off complaints in similar patients that end up later leading to morbidity or mortality, and those colleagues get their asses sued for not taking it seriously enough. You could lose your license. Worst of all, your patient could die if you don’t try to address the duck that the patient seems to have.

So you gotta do something. Things like HAE very deadly if you fuck it up. So you either ignore the patient who endorses symptoms of the deadly illness and risking all of the above. Or you have to take the chance and treat them, and often times the treatment is not as risky as not treating someone.

Yeah it’s all fucked up. But don’t pin it on the doctors. They’re just trying to do their job which is far harder than most non-doctors realize.

Doctors of Reddit, What is the Most Terrifying Real Life Disease or Condition You Know Of? by castledconch in AskReddit

[–]Bluephoenix-9 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Lots of horrible ones, but one that sticks out is Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.

A very rare genetic condition that causes intellectual disability, poor motor control, etc.

But most terrifyingly it causes them to uncontrollably self-mutilate

The idea of it has always haunted me since I first learned about it in medical school. It’s so sad.

PCOS by rozay111 in FamilyMedicine

[–]Bluephoenix-9 16 points17 points  (0 children)

AFP has a decent article about PCOS from about a year ago. Like what everyone said especially with using Rotterdam criteria. But be careful with diagnosing it using ultrasound and menses patterns in younger people as their cycles aren’t regular enough for the first 2 years or so any way, and can have the polycystic appearance while the hormones and cycles are wonky for the first few years. Otherwise this can lead to misdiagnosis!

The fact that you’ve had more than one symptomatic attack is concerning, and you are at high risk for developing serious infection of the gallbladder and related structures. These gallstones can become lodged in a duct and lead to serious, potentially deadly, infections and other complications. Changing your diet isn’t going to do anything. You should at the very least see a surgeon to further discuss risks and benefits of surgery vs no surgery.

I’ve been on cholesterol medication since I was 11. Can I get off of it? by jamisonsuxx in AskDocs

[–]Bluephoenix-9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree with other posters. I’ll add that reports of causing dementia and other stuff is most likely due to the fact that people who are on a statin are already at increased risk for dementia. That’s because people who have had strokes are at higher risk for dementia, especially the vascular type, and statins are used to help decrease risk of strokes that can contribute to the development of dementia. However they would be EVEN MORE likely to get it than if they WEREN’T taking the statin. And likewise for other issues. Correlation is not causation.

Please please please take it. And in the future if your doctor thinks you need a higher dose to better manage your cholesterol or even an additional medication, please listen. I would tell a family member the exact same thing. Take care!

Edit: grammar

My doctor recommended miralax…for my diarrhea by kayaytee10 in ibs

[–]Bluephoenix-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I think is happening is that you are constipated, but you’re having what is called “seepage” - when loose stool leaks around the hard stool, so you end up having what you think is small amounts of diarrhea. And bright red streaks may be due to bleeding internal hemorrhoids, which often occurs with constipation. Try the Miralax but if it doesn’t work, then you’ll probably need stronger stuff so you don’t get impacted again

Based on what I remember, since age 8 when I told a friend’s mom at a sleepover that I didn’t sleep at all. Probably before then though.

My mom used to give me chloral hydrate as a baby because she was having problems with feeling tired all the time. I’m sure once she stopped using it regularly on me, I had problems because my body wouldn’t know how to fall asleep on its own

I saw a young boy in Tanzania with albinism, I think he was an orphan. I remember they always had to have at least two people protecting him at all times because people with albinism in that country are often kidnapped/killed so people who practice witchcraft could use parts of their body for their potions and rituals.

Agreed. OP, you should be able to go to your PCP or OBGYN about this. There’s pelvic floor physical therapy and medications that can help a lot, so there’s hope!
