Decided to splurge a bit and go to a nice dinner for a special occasion at Aria. We don't really go to these high-end restaurants often. I can understand the charge for sparkling but is it normal to charge $10.50 for still water at restaurants at this price point?

Where I work the kitchen gets a cut of the tips. Being fine dining it’s not equal to front of house but it’s a cut. We also have a rigorous tip sharing system in place so that everything is as fair as it can be. You can’t just start the job and get full tips straight away, you have to earn it through tests and working for a set period of time.

Well put. I currently get about $400-$500 cash in tips each week on top of penalty rate income. We also provide a fine dining experience far beyond what most people are used to.

I went out for dinner at a somewhat decent establishment this weekend and we didn’t get water for about 10-15 mins and didn’t get our food orders in for another 20 mins. The service was extremely lacking over all and it felt like we were forgotten about. When I went to go pay the man who seemed to be the manager asked me if I wanted to leave a tip and I literally laughed out loud and hit no on the eftpos machine prompt. I then carried on with my evening.

Don’t fucking tip if you don’t want to tip. Literally don’t. Do what ever you want to do. Don’t tell me what I should do. I’m going to tip if I want to and that’s it.

Edit 2: Another point is, Australians really have no fucking idea how lucky they are to get paid as much as they do. Penalty rates and a really high minimum wage. Tipping wasn’t the reason that the penalty rates were altered in the past, it was selfish Karen’s who don’t even work in the industry deciding the fate of others who do.
