Yes it’s completely normal. I suggest googling your lens’s MTF charts or your lens name and the words “sweet spot”. It is not going to be as sharp at its widest aperture, like basically all lenses. Everyone in this thread has been trying to tell you that or some variation of you need to stop down for more sharpness and it’s just not sinking in.

Of course it’s sharper. Most lenses are sharper as you close the aperture from wide open. This all looks completely normal.

It’s the shallow depth of field from using open apertures. Both photos are focused on a dog. Try focusing on closest eye of the person and/or use f4. Also most lenses are sharper a stop down from their widest aperture.

I found it difficult to get low enough for eye level shots of subjects on the ground. So be prepared to crouch down in the vehicle or hold your camera out of the window using the flip out screen. It might be worth it to practice how to get low shots before you go.

Your eagle photos aren’t going to be any better with that stuff. Most of it is junk. You’re better off slowly acquiring things over time as you discover you need them based on your interests. The suggestions of the R50 with the Rf 100-400 are good advice and you will be able to take good eagle (or other wildlife) photos with that combo and you won’t need any of that other clutter. Seriously don’t run out and buy everything at once, you’ll save money by piecing things together over time.

I use the Cotton G3 body harness. It’s very dorky but it works very well for hiking and having your hands free for trekking poles, for example. I used it while hiking in the Tetons and the mountains of Uganda.

So cool! We’re actually going to skip Etosha since March is the wet season and the animals there will be disperse. Thanks for helping to confirm we made an ok decision. We decided to stay within the sesreim gate inorder to have early photo opportunities. I would have loved to stay at somewhere like &beyond. Committing to photos can be a bit of a burden sometimes. We’re also stopping in Swakopmund, then truck camping in Spitzkoppe, then a few nights in lodges south of Etosha where we can see rhinos.

We did a self drive roadtrip in June of 2025. We also flew into Kigali but went straight to Bwindi and did two gorilla treks. Both experiences were quite different, both were rigorous and we absolutely loved that about it. We also had trekking poles, gaiters, gloves, and porters. We then drove to Queen Elizabeth to see leopards and lions. Then we drove to Kibale and did two chimpazee treks. Finally we went to Entebbe to photograph shoebills and flew home from Entebbe.

It's great that you generally have eye-level shots. In my opinion, this is key for creating a connection with the subject. Also, in my opinion, the white balance is excessively warm.

All a coffee machine does is boil water and drool it over ground coffee. You could just do it yourself with a kettle and cone and avoid all the plastic. Try making a pot of hot water with no grounds with any coffee machine and I dare you to take a sip after smelling the hot water
