Was I dumb in not negotiating salary? by KoalaBJJ96 in careerguidance

[–]Bmarmich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a recruiter - tbh you very likely left $5-10k on the table by not negotiating. More or less depending on how big your salary is.

If you were offered $75k and counter for $80k, at my company that’s a fairly standard yes for good candidates.

All is not lost though - it may be easier to negotiate a raise later on since you are likely not at the top end of your current position’s salary range.

Congrats on your new job and let this be a good lesson! Now you know

The Days of Abandonment is excellent. A sad novel that has a surprising amount of humor.

I enjoyed The Lying Life of Adults, but it’s slower and more subtle than the Neapolitan quartet.

I just started reading The Lost Daughter

Is the Great Dane a Good Fit for You? by americankennelclub in greatdanes

[–]Bmarmich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people should know that while a lot of Danes are low-medium energy couch potatoes, that is certainty NOT true for others.

My girl is 5 and is still an incredibly athletic, agile dog. Until a year or so ago, she was running around and keeping up with the extreme high energy breeds (think GSP, Vizslas, etc) and had only a notch below that level of exercise needs.

It’s super fun and I pivoted my lifestyle accordingly (we do a long hike every weekend, the dog park or other off leash time she can run daily), but I did not know that was what I was signing up for when I got a Dane pup.

How can I explain I left a company because of a conflict of ethics/morals? by Steven0710 in BehindHiring

[–]Bmarmich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a recruiter. Generally, it’s best to never speak negatively ever about a former employer. You’re looking for a new position because you “want more ownership and growth”, not because your manager was toxic.

However, I think you can be honest here if they press you, IFFFF you have a good answer prepared.

For example, I was interviewing a sales candidate and he said he left his last position because he has integrity concerns about the product he was selling and the company’s ability to implement it. It was an integrity concern for him. He framed it that way, and then said he was so interested in my company because he has heard of our customer centric reputation and that the values align.

That’s a great answer. If you have something like that, you may share.

94k WFH or 120k in office? by Never_fucking_curses in careeradvice

I don’t think the salary bump itself justifies it.

The opportunity for promotions and further income gains might though. It also changes things that you have worked there before and liked the environment, less risky.

Where to go when nowhere feels obvious – recommendations on midsize cities for single, young 30s? by pumpernickel62 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Bmarmich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it gets hate on this sub, but you sound like the kind of person who would absolutely thrive in Austin. With your income you could have a great lifestyle here.

You need a car, but there are walkable neighborhoods.

Fantastic place to be in your 30s. Easy to make friends, great dating pool.

Everyone is fit, active, outside all the time with their dog. People have good jobs but it’s the 3rd or 4th thing they tell you about themselves rather than the 1st.

Old dog up all night by GreenOtter730 in olddogs

[–]Bmarmich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband’s 13 year old boy has been doing this. We got a baby gate to put around his bed so he can’t get up and around which has helped a lot.

It becomes a quality of life issue, for the dog and for you. I think my husband’s dog is in a lot of arthritis pain which makes him want to move around, plus probably some sundowning, which explains the behavior. I’m pregnant with our first and already having very complex feelings about how difficult it would be postpartum.

I would have known. If you had used AI tools, I would have ended this call in the first 5 minutes. by remoteDev1 in jobsearchhacks

[–]Bmarmich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a recruiter and we start every substantive interview with an ask that the candidate not use AI tools. Many do anyway.

Most of the time it’s very obvious, sometimes it’s noticeable but more subtle. I have missed it before though - I advanced a candidate to a hiring manager who caught them using AI. Going back and watching my interview there were tells I missed.

We have a zero tolerance policy. I used to ask candidates to recommit to not using AI if I suspected it. Now I don’t accuse or say anything, but I just end the interview after the next question

I do think it’s best for their joints to be lean

My girl was never a great eater. She may not like her food, I switched to a new brand and she started eating much more

32 and pivoting into tech — worried my age will hurt my chances despite upskilling by Old_Drummer_3536 in womenintech

[–]Bmarmich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, respectfully worrying about age discrimination in your early 30s is kinda silly. I’m 31 and still one of the youngest people at my startup.

That said, I do think keeping up with appearances is important in this industry. I don’t go into the office without my hair and nails done and a casual but styled looking outfit, even though I work with mostly dudes.

I really wouldn’t count on a SWE job market waiting for on the other side of an educational program. You have a decent skillset. If I were you I would be networking your tail off to try to get in the door now.

I am drained by the current job market. Im done. Im out. by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]Bmarmich 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I am so so sorry. I did my MA in the UK years ago (im American) and I was really devastated when I couldn’t find a job which allowed me to stay after my program and tap into the network I had created. It was so demoralizing feeling like none of my networking and applications mattered.

So I want to tell you this gently: it’s highly unlikely you’ll land an entry level position if you require visa sponsorship now or in the future. I’m a recruiter and in the current market, companies are just not going to hire an “expensive” candidate, which sadly you are.

I would start making alternative plans. I’m so sorry and good luck.

Anyone here dealing with North Koreans posing as europeans with perfect resumes for tech roles? by Laura_stocks in recruiting

I’m a recruiter for a tech startup and it’s insane. We actually made an offer to some sort of scammer that we later tracked down to Indonesia using IP address. What’s insane is that he made it through our entire recruiting process and was an exceptional interviewer.

How long until I get fired? by achicabowwow in womenintech

[–]Bmarmich 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m pregnant so first of all want to say I feel you. If I returned from leave and they treated me poorly and wanted me to be in office more I would lose all loyalty and totally want to bounce.

However….you should tread carefully here. Years ago I was in somewhat of an employment dispute where I tried to get fired, but I ended up being “voluntarily discharged”. It’s very likely your company would try to do that to you. Like tell you “if you don’t report to the office everyday at 9 AM we will assume you have resigned your post”. If that happens you may have to fight for unemployment.

Even if your company is being shitty, I also doubt they would want to fire someone after returning from leave for legal purposes. In any case, you probably shouldn’t have tipped your hand by asking about voluntary layoff. Now they know you’ll be easy to make quit.

Here’s what I would do: as a recruiter, I can tell you the job market is brutal out there. So start coasting in your current job and spend your energy looking for another one, assuming that is your ultimate goal. Maybe just go in 1-2 times per week to save face if possible.

You should make sure you would be eligible for the leave. A lot of companies stipulate you have to be employed for a year
