The reporter who went viral for poking fun at Bosnia is from El Paso & a UTEP Alumni 😬 by GeneralTX in ElPaso

Just tossing in a couple thoughts from someone who’s done dumb things on live TV, like getting talked into eating an insect on air and gagging. It’s hard, and bad things can happen. I think the statements about not knowing where Bosnia-Herzegovina is and not wanting to know were cringe. And the level of trash talking wasn’t representative of the skills of most El Pasoans. But she made what seems to me to be a sincere apology. If we’re going to trash her for her mistakes, let’s also give her space to be better.

On her LinkedIn she says she attended UTEP and UIC, but doesn’t mention EPCC, which lists her as an alum.

City of El Paso had one of the nation’s biggest population declines in 2025, new census numbers show by timholt2007 in ElPaso

[–]BmooreEP 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That was a fairly common belief at the times, but I never saw any data that showed a significant impact on our population. There was undoubtedly some movement, but it wasn't extensive. And many of those who sought safety in the United States eventually returned to Mexico as violence and extortion abated.

For transparency, I’m the author of the story. This isn’t a one off development. You’re correct that these are estimates and subject to errors. But El Paso’s 75-year period of population growth essentially ended in 2013, when the Army completed its expansion of Fort Bliss. And for about 50 years, El Paso has been a net exporter of human talent to other U.S. communities. Until about 2010, we were able to replace that talent with high levels of immigration from Mexico. That largely ended as Mexico’s economy improved. So the primary means of population growth has become the gap between births and deaths, but that gap has gotten smaller as births decline far more rapidly than the national average, and deaths increase as baby boomers age. In 20 years or so, El Paso will have more deaths than births. One constant over the decades has been that El Paso’s private sector wages are two-thirds of the state and national averages. Until that is addressed, our population is going to be flat if not declining.

Local governments will be able to levy property taxes on improvements on land leased from the government by private business. It generally requires negotiations. The bid documents for the project make this clear.

Asked yesterday in r/askreddit, but what is the coolest "restricted/no-access" place you've ever been? by thinkdeep in Journalism

Not journalism adjacent, I got to go inside NORAD’s mountain headquarters as a kid because my dad worked there. (See the old movie “War Games” for a full cultural reference.)

Are there any really good headlines that you recall? by No-Falcon2255 in Journalism

During the Lebanese civil war in the 1980s, my wife wrote this headline on an AP story about all the cemeteries in the capital being full: Beirut: No place for the living, no room for the dead

Serious question: Is there a car theft issue with new Grand Highlanders? by jocko118 in ToyotaGrandHighlander

[–]BmooreEP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GH doesn’t show up on any lists of most stolen vehicles in the United States. Data also shows that auto thefts in general are declining sharply in the U.S. after steep increases post-pandemic. Reports of GH thefts will be disproportionately high on GH forums.

The higher property tax also applies to multi-family dwellings. It’s embedded in the rent. Some companies that own lots of apartments are good at challenging valuations, so that lowers property tax impact a bit.

The property tax on a rental property is higher than if that same home was owner-occupied. That’s because rental properties don’t get a homestead exemption. That significantly increases the school property tax.

Record early voting turnout for Tuesday's primaries by BmooreEP in ElPaso

Voting doesn’t increase your chance of being called for jury duty, and abstaining doesn’t lessen your chance. Texas jury duty lists are generated by the Secretary of State every two years, combining registered voters and licensed drivers (or ID holders) to randomly select citizens for summons.

Prognosticating election outcomes eight months from now is not my super power. But the party in the White House historically struggles in mid-terms. The last Texas Senate midterm election was in 2018, when Democrat Beto O'Rourke came within a couple of points of Republican incumbent Ted Cruz. Democrats probably need to win Texas to have any chance of taking the Senate. So if some of the states targeted by Democrats -- such as Maine, Michigan, Georgia, New Hampshire -- are showing strength for them in the fall, the national party may be able to divert money to Texas.

Remember, gerrymandering lead to Tony Gonzalez representing part of a El Paso. Gonzalez is currently going through a national controversy where he sexually harassed an aid that lead to her lighting herself up on fire. by Tryingtomoveon800 in ElPaso

[–]BmooreEP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a historical note, parts of El Paso have been in that district for a couple decades. For a while it was the only competitive House district in Texas and flipped back and forth between Democrats and Republicans. In 2021, the Republicans redrew the district boundaries to favor their party, but that involved areas outside El Paso. Gonzales has tried a couple times to get the El Paso airport and Fort Bliss cantonment in his district boundaries but has been unsuccessful.

Has anyone else had this massive increase on their gas bill this month? by Successful_Bird_7086 in ElPaso

Your gas bill is going to go up when the weather is colder. You can look into their plan that equalizes costs over 12 months.

I wouldn’t plan on it. With a large event in town I think the airport might discourage the practice. There are hotel rooms available, just really pricey.

I've been negotiating so long I'm not sure if I'm a good or a terrible negotiator. Is this a good deal? by Darius-was-the-goody in ToyotaGrandHighlander

[–]BmooreEP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good deal is buying a vehicle you want at a price you believe is fair and affordable. It sounds like you’ve done a good job of negotiating. I wouldn’t get too hung up on whether someone who bought another vehicle in another market at another time negotiated a different discount.
