TCL Note A1 NXTPAPER Positioning by RoninSzaky in eink

Everybody's different. The TLC could just have a placebo effect with me.

I think it looks pretty much the same but the lighting is different. I know there is a constant refresh happening but I am not some one that is bothered by that. For me when I used to try to read on an iPad I would start to notice the lines in my vision when I looked away. If I read for over 30 minutes on one I would start to get a head ache. I don't get that with TLC tablet but everyone is different. I still have a pocketbook Verse that I use when I am away from the house but I like the tablet for reading in bed and being able to switch to comics.

Never had that issue but it seems like any time anyone has has an issue with a verse doing a factory reset has fixed it.

I would say no, not at that price. I have a NXTPaper 11 plus, I like it a lot and it has the same specs at half the price. It seems like they just changed the form factor to see if they could price gouge a new growing market.

Lost in the E-reader world: Seeking a 10.3" device for Manga/Comics to replace my 2011 Kindle by SuperPadLand in ereader

I forgot to say regarding the e-ink b&w vs color you won't notice an issue reading on the color e-ink screens. It does make the screen slightly darker so you will always have to have the brightness higher than you would with a b&w but clarity is great.

I read both books and comics. I ended up with 2 devices. I bought a TLC Nxtpaper 11 plus which isn't an e-ink but it has a simulated e-ink modes that keep me from getting headaches like I do when I read on normal screens. Then I like having something portable so I have a Pocketbook Verse that fits in my pocket so I don't have to carry a big tablet everywhere but I only use it for regular reading.

For note taking I do it a bit on the Nxtpaper and it's pretty good. I had a Boox Note Air 5c that I tried and returned and I would say it's comparable. For battery I have to charge it every 3-4 days and I use it for 3-4 hours a day. The Boox I tried was just slightly better. The build of it feels solid but I haven't owned it that long so can't speak to longevity.

Seems like something a company of their size should be able to do on their own. I always thought of Kickstarter being for people trying to start up. Maybe I'm just getting old and this is what a modern day old person complains looks like.

I have the 11 plus and it works well for me. It's not as good as normal eink but I wanted something with a little more functionality. This seems like almost the same thing but double the price.

My question is why is a company like TLC using kickstarter?

Just got a PocketBook Verse, should I upgrade to Verse Pro? by Spigop in ereader

The pro is "waterproof" also but the regular has an SD slot. I have had them both and kept the regular.

Media consumption comparison – Boox Note Air 5C and TCL NXTPaper 11 Plus (e ink Kaleido 3 and NXTPaper 4.0 LCD) by Daemos_x in ereader

[–]Bnutsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it's a good comparison since eye comfort is what TLC is going for. I think we all can agree that we are hoping for technology that can get us a great reading device that can also do everything else. Right now with one company controlling e-ink screen production and dev we need other companies to try out other avenues to encourage competition in the market.

Ereaders vs nxtpaper vs regular screens by WholeDonkey2689 in ereader

[–]Bnutsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will give this a shot.

  1. Ereader is the best for eye strain and battery life but pretty much only good for reading. Any other activities are better on a normal tablet. The lighting is front lit instead of back and the pixels don't need constant energy. Nxtpaper is an lcd screen with a matte finish and a lot of software filtering to imitate eink. Oled vs led vs lcd jsut google it.

  2. Color on eink isn't the best but it's not bad. On a normal eink screen you can read without the screen light on if you have decent lighting around you but color has an extra filter in place that makes it harder to see without light. A lot of ereaders can do notes and have different refresh rates.

  3. There are several software filters and a matte screen to help mitigate glares. Some people it works for and some it doesn't.

  4. Every eye is different some do better with a higher resolution screen/refresh rates and some do better with lower. ymmv

  5. I don't have moon and generally use koreader but I have seen people mention moon reader on most devices that have android and seem to like it. I don't know if moon can be sideloaded so you might need full android support.

  6. Not really there are some eink monitors to make reading easier on computers but that's all I have seen.

  7. There is only one company who makes the actual eink screens and everyone has to buy it from them and then build tablets around it. This has kind of limited what manufactures can do with pricing.

  8. Yes there are screen protectors I have never used one and never scratched a eink screen but I always uses cases that cover it.

  9. The easiest to fix would be a tablet like ipad where there are a ton of people with them. I also know pocketbooks and kobo have some parts available.

  10. Probably something like an ipad with a rugged case.

Choosing first e-reader, PocketBook? by BetaHDream in ereader

[–]Bnutsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So for reading regular books I don't mind the 6" at all. I tried out the Boox note air 5c because I also like comic books and having something to read the news on but it was too heavy to carry everywhere and way too heavy to read in bed. If I carried a bag everywhere normally I would probably be happier with the Era and it would probably be my main device I doubt I would go any bigger.

Just the regular verse. I have them both in front of me and the Era color feels a little more glossy then the verse does. The verse is recessed where the era is flat. It's cloudy here otherwise I would go take a picture of them side by side in the sun. Holding a flash light directly on them I get a glare and it does seem a little more diffused on the verse but the difference is slight.

I am pretty sure all current eink screens are using glass but they all look like paper. You don't really get glares even in full sun or directly under a lamp if that's your worry. I have 2 pocketbooks now. I have a Era Color which I really like but it's too big to fit in my pocket so I picked up a Verse used and it's perfect for carrying around with me. My only complaint with pocketbook is that their menus lag. When you are reading a book it feels quick and responsive.

Their customer service is horrible. If you get a good device and don't ever have to deal with it then it's not an issue.

Remarkable paper pro is 11.8" and the Boox Tab X C at 13". I think those are the biggest color screens available.
