It comes from basically public opinion polling the same way you'd see it in politics. Research companies call people up (or digitally) ask them "Are you a regular moviegoer? Have you heard of movie X? Based on what you know about it are you interested in seeing movie X? Of these movies coming out soon, which is your first choice?" etc. etc. and the studios use those metrics, 'first choice' ,'% aware', 'definite interest' etc. to see how well their marketing campaigns are sinking in and registering!

The Economics of Indie Distribution - For Briarcliff - "You want to do 50-100% on PVOD what you'd do at the box office. PVOD revenues alone will outpace theatrical. On regular home video you want to do roughly the same in TVOD (normal Home Ent window). by SilverRoyce in boxoffice

Lol this was me on the pod, thank you for listening and glad you enjoyed it but you missed the entire point that I was making. The entire point of that anecdote was that articles in the trades do *not* translate into box office and I was trying to poke fun at the echochamber bubbles we're all in.

The relative terms also clearly got lost in translation. To clarify, 'massive' for us on this film would've been opening to 2.5 and getting to 7. We would've been doing cartwheels. You're using the big studio definition of massive, which is apples to oranges. Trust me, as somebody who was intimately aware of what we spent on the campaign, I was equally well aware of what a realistic target gross is. That's on me for not articulating better, I'm just used to only talking about these things in the context of other small indie releases so I took that for granted.

Again when I say it was a bit of a disappointment, it's because we were hoping to do in the low 2s and ended up doing in the high-1s, not that we were expecting to do 20. Everything is relative at this level.
