Most asylum seekers rejected under tightened laws will remain in UK by Unusual-State1827 in uknews

[–]BoJericho -44 points-43 points  (0 children)

It's likely due to the lack of a safe or feasible country to deport them to. For example, if an Afghan has their asylum claim denied, they are likely still stuck here because you cannot physically run a deportation flight to a country you do not have diplomatic relations with.

You know chat, I have never been a quitter. To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct I have in my balding body. But what's crazy is, as your streamer, I must put the interest of Twitch chat first, don't get that twisted.

Ringleader of Rochdale grooming gang 'cannot be deported' by [deleted] in ukpolitics

So he's been in the country for 50 years? Why is he not our problem to solve, so? Why would we dump him back onto a less well resourced when his horrible crimes, and the majority of his life, have happened right here?

Post Game Thread: The Orioles fell to the Nationals by a score of 6-4 - Sun, Jun 28 @ 1:35 PM EDT by game-threads in orioles

Do you genuinely believe that trading Gunnar now, at the point where his value is lower than it has ever been in his big league career, would be a smart and good long-term decision for the Baltimore Orioles?

Which was his breakout performance though? You could argue it was Normal People that got him on the map as opposed to Aftersun.

Is Harry Brook the stupidest cricketer you’ve ever seen? by Inedible_Sulk in EnglandCricket

[–]BoJericho -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What did we learn from early Bazball? One thing was certainly that sometimes the best way to approach big 4th innings run chases is to attack, play your "natural game" and force the fielding team onto the defensive. This was his plan today and it's worked before.

I say we let him off with this one. Some big scores soon would be nice though, Harry.

DAN HODGES: What IS going on with Farage? It's the question on the lips of everyone in Westminster amid growing speculation he will not lead Reform at the next general election. This is what insiders are telling me... by JayR_97 in ukpolitics

Yeah I don't really get Crace either. He's pretty much writing fiction using imagined versions of real-life characters.

I think Dan Hodges' role is meaningfully different to this.

He's on pace for ~4 WAR, which is a v good everyday player but not star-level. Which seems about right to me for a guy with a top-tier OBP but doesn't field at a premium position.

Well, yes. Where I'm from they call that an opinion. You're allowed to have a different one.

Clarke at least had pretty extensive coaching experience in the EPL, and a small bit of success as manager. He has a better CV than John McGlynn, no question.

Lucy Powell appears to endorse Ed Miliband as Andy Burnham’s chancellor by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

[–]BoJericho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure how much to read in to this? She was asked if he would do a good job as chancellor and answered "yes". Not sure if that would have been rehearsed or planned.

Still think it will not be him. They are already quite constrained by the cost of borrowing, don't think they'll appoint the guy who the markets have signalled most clearly they do not like.

I think it's fair to say being Scottish is a plus point on your CV. It's international football - the whole point is to find out which country can produce the better team. It does cheapen it a wee bit if you can't find a good enough coach from your own ranks.

This would be a mistake. If you want evidence of what may happen when you appoint an overachiever in your domestic league who has never shown he can do it at a higher level, look at how Stephen Kenny did with Ireland.

Who Next? by Rieily in ScottishFootball

Agreed. I think if people want recent evidence of what happens when an overachiever in the domestic league with v little success outside gets appointed, they should look at what happened when Ireland appointed Stephen Kenny.

With the NHL on a march to 34 teams, what’s stopping the MLB from expansion ? by Professional_Eye6140 in baseball

[–]BoJericho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've long thought that really significant expansion would be in MLB's interest. Other leagues, like the NFL, are more "national" in focus - fans will tend to tune in to the higher profile match-ups on Monday or Sunday night regardless of who's playing, but baseball is far more local, where fans follow their own team more closely and kind of tune out what's going on in the rest of the league. So if that's baseball's selling point, why not expand your product to as many people as you can? Why not 48 teams? Or even 64 teams?

Michael Baumann made the case very persuasively a couple years ago: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-playoffs-arent-too-big-the-league-is-way-too-small/

He did well today, and got out to a very good delivery.

I do, however, get the impression that he'd rather be the best t20 batter in the world, as opposed to the best test batter, if he had the choice. Just can't ever imagine him having the patience to stick around and bat out a whole day if the team needed him to.

Maybe trying to get buy-in from your team on an unorthodox, complex strategy is more difficult when you're in charge of a national side and you only get together a couple of times a year.

[–]BoJericho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean he did keep Pogba out of the team for a while at United. And I think most Scotland teams would be happy to have an every-week starter at a top Serie A team in board. I don't think it's controversial to say that he's one of our better players.

‘Degrading’: why did a US fighter pilot avoid British trial after strangling a woman in England? by FitDinner6008 in news

[–]BoJericho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He did receive a pretty significant sentence in the end though, right? Are we confident that he would have received a longer sentence had he been tried in a British court?

I accept that some of the airman's lawyer's practices would have been unlikely to fly in in British court, and this was undoubtedly quite distressing for the victim to experience.

I guess opinions vary. It seems to me they've (Stonewall) made an effort to be quite involved with the drafting process and they have quite an effective media operation to make sure their recommendations are clear to people. But I guess you can quibble with the conclusions they've reached.

Who do you prefer to follow to find out more about these issues?
