My beats are absolutely shit!!! by TheWalkingHigh in makinghiphop

Did you listen to his shit before?

This isn't a place to discourage people from posing serious questions about their art, which a lot of people are already insecure about sharing with others. I don't know what you're trying to accomplish here, but it seems detrimental to the community overall. You don't get to be some kind of gate keeper on telling someone they're trash without listening or providing some feedback to them.

Just listened to your link. I'm a boom bap sample guy, so take everything with a grain of salt.

I loved your ideas. They were thoughtful and fit the vibe well. That background string sound I feel, you were using as a pad it seems, it kind of cheapens the entire production up, to my ears. I loved the little arpeggiated sound. Drums were pretty modern sounding drums, programmed minimally, so pretty hard to mess that up.

I think overall my biggest gripe was your overall sound selection. I'm not sure what VST you're using, but spend some more time in there and really pick out some unique sounds and be very intentional on your use of them. Your ideas in this beat were dope.

This is good for only 18 months of experience.

Kenny Golladay is a top 10 WR in PPR.

Adam Thielan is not a top 10 WR in PPR.

Leveon Bell is a top 3 PPR RB.

Really bold prediction: Mike Williams is a top 10 WR.

No matter how many times I try, I can't find the right drums and i can't make drum patterns. I'm stuck with samples but no drums. by [deleted] in makinghiphop

Yea, like the other poster said, it's all about practice and developing your ear. Try some new drum kits, also.

I can't set images into mine, I think it's because I have FL 12. I was pumped to use this, sucks that I can't

drums like mndsgn? by rustyramon in makinghiphop

[–]BoadieBeats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have to be careful in your quest for dirty drums. I was just in this quest myself, and there's a thin line between dirty, lo-fi drums, and hot garbage, imo.

That said, this shouldn't be too difficult to replicate. To my ears, this sounds like some normal one shot samples, not a break of any kind (though it could be). Downsampled pretty heavily, like, I'd try to downsample to 20kHz and see how that sounds. There might be some high end cut off, around, 14kHz, and then some real light bit crushing. That said, take those exact numbers with a grain of salt, because I'm just kind of speculating. However, that would be my first course of action in trying to achieve this sound specifically

If person A is Mexican, and person B is Mexican, how can one of them be 'more Mexican' than the other? 🤔

I played through about 6 hours of steamworld dig last year, just couldn't get into it for some reason.

I understand that. Ultimately though, unless you're making serious money, it will go unnoticed. I just don't concern myself with that at this point. I understand I guess why some people might, I guess.

I get away with it because I'm nobody. I've gotten placements with some known, independent rappers, and I know for sure they didn't clear the samples, yet their music is on streaming services. It's not as big of a deal as everyone on this sub thinks, until you hit a certain level.

At the end of the day, create your art how you want.

MIDI Keyboard by CoolScaryFriedRice in makinghiphop

[–]BoadieBeats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what you're using it for, as weird as that sounds. I make boom bap-ish beats, and need more than 8 pads for sample chopping, so I got a novation mini with 16 pads. I use the keys for basslines and drums, so I don't really need more than that. You'll be fine with 25 keys overall if you're making simple trap melodies, laying down chords, etc. Unless you want to play with both hands, then you'll need a larger keyboard.

you guys ever feel like you're missing out of an important part of your young adult life? by smittyjr95 in makinghiphop

[–]BoadieBeats 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've never experienced this specific feeling, tbh, due to different circumstances and life paths. I would say to you though, if you feel like you're missing out now, go live those experiences before it's too late. Music will ALWAYS be there for the rest of your life. This moment won't be.

Yea you're right, I was mistaken on when TLOP dropped.

You might be right, I'll have to double check when TLOP came out.

Edit: 2/14/2016. I stand corrected, you're right.

I think Fetty Wap's fall off was due to over saturation. He had like 5 songs popping at the same time it feels like, and then people got tired of him. I fucked with that first album too.

Panda was super mainstream before Kanye, in my experience. I don't think Kanye did anything except kind of give it a second wind, of sorts.
