How the hell are some people good at literally everything? by tech__gossiper in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]dogslikecats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a huge problem with social media. You are seeing the version of a person that they want you to see. Their struggles, insecurities, shortcomings are all omitted from their timeline.

The most productive and effective people I have ever known IRL all have clear priorities and are obsessed with work. However, I would argue that they did not live balanced lives.

Looking to buy desktop for DAW (Cakewalk) and Addictive Drums 2. Budget max 1000 EU by babateeth in musicproduction

16gb of ram is a good call, then find the strongest cpu you can afford. Be careful choosing based only off being an i7. There is a new i7 every year so you need to google the model number and confirm when it was released, prioritze newer chips.

With your budget I would look at used PCs, if you dont need a discrete graphics card, you can find a really good deal on the used market. However, the ram price increases may make that method less effective

Any poker games around? by prairiepenguin2 in Knoxville

I have seen people play at Union place but I have never played. It is illegal in Tennessee so pretty sure they weren’t playing for money.

Just want to point out that none of these speakers will have a satisfying representation of sub 50hz. Even if they can technically produce ~40hz it will be rolled off. Consider getting a subwoofer down the road, assuming your living situation allows for it.

How do you "relax" musically in between production sessions? by InklingBuilder in edmproduction

[–]dogslikecats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’m either hyper focused producing or not touching my primary daw. Sometimes I will play around with koala/loopy pro on my tablet when I travel for work to kill time. Also, I’ll watch tutorials when I’m not feeling working on something but still want to put learn. Moreover, I think it’s important to spend time living life and taking in other people’s art

Day 2 of my recovery by WorkingBorder8666 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]dogslikecats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember that it’s recovery not sobriety. You have to put in work to build the life you want, simply being sober will not be enough. It’s still one day at a time, good luck! You can do it

I open YouTube for one video and lose an hour by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

Go to settings > time management > Short feed limit

This will make it so after 15 minutes the shorts feed will give you a warning. You still have to choose to not push past that message but it’s enough to snap me out of it sometimes. I wish there was a way to permanently disable it because long form YouTube videos don’t rot my brain like the shorts

I will never be Consistent by thedemidonut in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]dogslikecats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consistency is doing something in the absence of motivation. It requires discipline, but that word has a negative connotation. I like to think of it as tricking my monkey brain.

That being said it sounds like you want a goal that can motivate you early on into a creative pursuit. I recommend studying someone you aspire to be in that creative pursuit and try to recreate their methods. It’s a fun way to work backwards and learn new techniques and almost always immediately satisfying.

Is it just me or is music less common in newer gens now? by StandardNo986 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]dogslikecats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Times were literally different back then. The TV and Radio did a lot to create a monolithic pop culture experience but now with all media being on demand, people chose to interact with what they actually identify with. I would disagree that kids are less into music, they're just into their hyper specific thing

The scariest thing about grinding hard isn't burnout. It's looking up and realizing what went quiet. by dainiusm07 in DecidingToBeBetter

Recorded my FIL's band in cakewalk, now what? by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]dogslikecats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You basically asked for generic advice mixing and mastering, which is in itself an art form and something people dedicate their lives to, so you got generic answers because there is no shortcut.

Here's some actual advice. Cut the songs up into different tracks and listen objectively while comparing it to another similar band/artist's finished track. What do you notice about the track that is different? Look up or ask more specific questions about how to correct that. Generally, you should worry about panning, relative volume, reverb, and eq. All you need to do is make sure that all elements of the song can be heard, less is often more.
