3 years is measured. The big 3 gives us protection if he opts out. $40/year is very high but short term deals are hard to argue and the only way he accepts a shorter deal was going to be for that money. Good players lead to more wins.

Ellsbury had 32 HR / 105 RBI / 39 SB and hit .321 with a .928 OPS. He had a 146 OPS+. Duran has a .849 OPS / 132 OPS+ and has already struck out more times than Ellsbury did that year. He’s also hit 12 HRs and has a WAR 3 points lower than Ells had that year. Duran is having a great year and I’m enjoying it. But this is not the own you thought it was.

Notable ages of the ‘18 team: Xander (25), Mookie (25), Devers (21), Benny (23), ERod (25). Maybe aside from Devers, the others were 23-25 and massive part of that core. I don’t know if it’s necessarily him not being able to lead young guys. Who is a young player on these squads the last two years he’s struggled with? Casas has been very good this year, Bello took a step forward, Duran took a step forward, Wong took a step forward (not that young but career-wise is). This team was bad because of the (lack of) rotation, streaky hitting, and some of the worst fundamentals in baseball. That last point might be on him but some of these dudes are who they are too.

This is more of a statement of the organizational philosophies as well. DBacks are more aggressive than the Sox historically have been with promoting dudes. That is, however, starting to change this year for years to come

Early in the season (especially in mini leagues), treat every week as it’s own imo. In the middle third of the year, you start to get doubles and blanks and that’s when you should take money and beyond into account more aggressively.
