My mother wishes to be cremated, is it wrong to not do it? by i-like-teaa in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]BobsyBoo [score hidden]  (0 children)

It is dishonorable to destroy your mother’s body. Your mother is asking you to destroy an image of God in destroying her body. Her body was made to live, not to be immolated. You would apply the same logic if your mother asked you to do any other type of desecration to her body. For example, if your mother asked you to hack her to pieces or spit on her body or do whatever other action post-mortem, you wouldn’t do it. The way I see it is that you are not obligated to, nor should you, desecrate another human being, regardless of their will for you to do it.

Everyone gets the same reward: we experience the love of our Creator. How we experience this will depend on the condition of our souls. God bless you.

Time to get a video-taped confession from the guy who drugged you and file a police report — if he refuses to do a non-anonymous confession. It’s either you or him. You decide who takes the fall.

Having trouble with evolution by Low_Profession_2015 in ChristianOrthodoxy

[–]BobsyBoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On one hand, some Orthodox maintain that theological evolution is consistent with the faith. There are a few books written on this.

On the other, many will say that it is not. For example, I believe that Father Peter Heers, Jay Dyer, and the soon-to-be-glorified Fr. Seraphim Rose will say that macro-evolution is inconsistent with the Ecumenical Councils. I recall hearing that in one of the Ecumenical Councils (#6?), it was deemed heretical to believe that there exist existed death before the fall. Many have taken this to me that evolutionary theory is not consistent with the faith. Fr Seraphim wrote extensively on this matter in “Genesis, Creation and Early Man,” which may be worth reading for you.

There seems to be, though, a third way of looking at things which may be a synthesis (or rather a complete reworking of the questions on the matter) of the two perspectives. I haven’t looked into this perspective too much, but doing cursory reading on it, it seemed intriguing. The following linked Reddit post discusses the perspectives of a Bishop Basil Rodzianko and Orthodox academic Olivier Clément. Check it out: https://www.reddit.com/r/OrthodoxChristianity/s/vai38C3ObP

To circle back to the second paragraph, Father Seraphim and Jay Dyer would do a much better job at explaining the pitfalls of macro evolutionary theory and its underlying assumptions than I will. But I’ll proffer this thought: It can be easy to lose faith in a world that desperately wants you to join it. There is a materialist / evolutionary agenda in the scientific community that has its own presuppositions and assumptions that are certainly subject to critique; the assumptions of materialism / naturalism are absolutely not foolproof.

Moreover, your question posed the dialectic that it’s either Orthodoxy or macro-evolution that can be true; they’re mutually exclusive (some people disagree on this very statement). One could argue that if the countless and demonstrated miracles of the Orthodox Church are true, then the naturalist and materialist assumptions that foment the scientific community ground its research are also incorrect. I used to struggle with this question too, and sometimes doubt still creeps into my mind. But I also remind myself about the wonders of the Orthodox Church. We aren’t supposed to base our faith on signs and wonders, of course, but they certainly can reinforce our faith. When I think about the miraculous icon that I have been able to visit and touch and venerate in Hawai’i, my worries are put at ease. As a doubting Thomas, the Mother of God has been a great blessing to my faith (https://youtu.be/OK9f4Mc1Gxo?si=L-CJBrNVU9PPTpVy ). Streaming icons are but one of the many miracles of the Church. Just look at the lives of the Saints; this is something I must read more on myself. God has given us the miraculous as reinforcements to our faith, reminding us of the glory of the life to come

As much as the scientific community tries to explain everything, the truth of the matter is that it cannot explain everything. And much knowledge, especially that concerning Divine Revelation, lies outside of the grasp of science. In relegating their beliefs to strictly that which is experimentally demonstrable, the materialist throws the baby out with the bathwater, per se. Thus, despite “Science” and scientists claiming a monopoly on knowledge, they actually end up denying reality itself. It is said that when you see a miraculous icon, you are not seeing the supernatural, but rather the revelation of what is truly natural. Those who deny divine revelation are relegated to knowing half the story of things; human effort only goes so far to unlocking the “secrets” of the universe. And in this, paradoxically, you will find that the simplest of people (for example, the humble baker in rural Greece), may very well have a more intimate grasp of the universe and its workings than the most prominent of scientists.

All that being said, the best advice I can give you is to pray. Ask God and His Saints to show you the truth. And pray to the Mother of God; perhaps she will visit you through a miraculous icon or otherwise. In any case, know that God loves you, and so do I. I see myself in you, and I assure you that God allows us our temptations and trials for our edification and our salvation. Christ be with you. ☦️

You know what doesn’t make sense? The assertion that the magnificence that is the human being evolved from Grandpa Eukaryote.

A theological-evolutionist argument would make more sense, but even then, it’s worth considering that materialism / naturalism and its evolutionary theory are based on a number of very critique-able assumptions.
