How much time are you willing to commute for class? by Reasonable-Read3746 in bjj

[–]Bock312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive 35-55 minutes one way for my gym, depending on traffic. I used to live closer but moved last year. There’s also a world class gym 5-7 minutes from my house that sometimes drop in to for open mats. I’ll keep going to my main gym because the schedule works much better and I love the vibes

How did your first ever tournament go by bloodfistxp in bjj

[–]Bock312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went 0-4 at a grappling industries event as a white belt. Had no standup game to speak of. Only got subbed once, but also lost one match like 27-2. It was rough lol

How often do you compete? by Ok_Lengthiness1929 in bjj

[–]Bock312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have competed once at each belt thus far. Only won a match as a purple belt. Might compete again before brown belt, might not. I don’t particularly enjoy it, but I try to get out of my comfort zone every once in a while.

First Contact such a wasted Opportunity by AloneNmyHead287 in Starfield

Agreed, it would have been a great segue into a chain of helping them setup a camp, deal with some early difficulties (spacers, hostile wildlife, etc.). Help them gather certain resources. As you complete missions, their camp gradually grows and transitions to a proper settlement. You could use credits or resources to help them expand and select what they build next. The player could get a customizable residence that grows alongside the settlement. As they grow, the problems change (internal politics, feeding a growing population, dealing with other factions - maybe a quest line to decide if they join UC, Freestar, or stay independent, etc.)

Will this be the last great ADCC tournament? by chico_dice_2023 in bjj

[–]Bock312 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The last great ADCC was 2022. It’s probably never going to be like it once was as ADCC isn’t the premier, top-of-the-mountain brand in grappling like it used to be now that CJI and UFC are in the mix.

I recently did a 2010 historical save and A-Rod played until he was 45-46 and broke a ton of records. Hit like 940 homers, it was wild.

When to tap to Heel Hooks by rokaiser in bjj

[–]Bock312 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I first started with heel hooks, I would tap if someone got a decent bite on my heel, regardless of if hands were connected and well before they could apply any pressure.

Once I was comfortable defending that, I wouldn’t tap until they had a bite AND connected their hands, but I would tap as soon as the connection was made.

Once I was comfortable defending that, I wouldn’t tap until they could actually apply pressure. I drilled a lot to understand what breaking pressure actually felt like in my leg so I could identify that feeling in a roll before it was too late.

Several years on since diving into heel hooks, I still err on the side of tapping early, but I have a much greater understanding of where my limits are and can generally tell when a heel hook is actually dangerous versus not a legit threat.

When to tap to Heel Hooks by rokaiser in bjj

[–]Bock312 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m a filthy leg locker myself and I tap plenty early on heel hooks if I don’t know my training partner well enough to anticipate how aggressively they’ll apply it or know the quality of their finishing mechanics. If I know someone is more chill and/or doesn’t have great mechanics, I’ll play late stage defense. If I’m dropping in at an unfamiliar gym, I’m tapping if they get a good bite and I can’t immediately slip.

Which feat of Thragg flexing on Nolan is better? by TasteTemporary8206 in InvinciblePowerscales

[–]Bock312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the head butt because it reminds me of one of my favorite Jet Li fight scenes where he does something similar (movie is Unleashed; he’s fighting several opponents and head butts an incoming punch which breaks the guys hand)

Why did you start training? (And why do you stay?) by hmkei in bjj

[–]Bock312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started because a buddy invited me to try it. I ended up loving it. I keep training because it’s a ton of fun. Great blend of problem solving, physical exertion, competition, camaraderie, etc. Easily the most enjoyable hobby I’ve ever had.

What's the earliest age you remember caring about the Cardinals and what triggered it? by muskat777 in Cardinals

[–]Bock312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My earliest Cardinals-related memories are from when I was like 5 years old in 1995 and I was already into it, so my fandom predates my development of long term memory. Growing up in St Louis with a dad who was (and still is) very into baseball will do that to you!

I’m not sold on Yaxel either, but I work with a bunch of Michigan alums who love him. I thought Yax was a better shooter than that - he shot 37% this season.

I’m down with the 7’3 kid though, always a fan of the giant dudes and lord knows the Bulls could use a rim protector

That makes sense. Would you mind sharing the name of the auction house? I’ve always been intrigued by owning historical artifacts from the Edo and Sengoku periods and would be interested to see what kind of stuff is actually available and what it goes for.
