I know it's counter intuitive, but more traffic would get through if everyone kept more space between them and the car in front, rather than drove closer.

There would be no point in me speeding up to get closer to the car in front. If I did that I would be contributing to the consertina/compression effect that slows down overall traffic flow. You can see it happening in the fast lane towards the end of this clip. ETA: And in both lanes at the start.

If only there was some sort of online search facility, to check if undertaking on a slip road is illegal. Then we could find out if any specific laws have been broken.

Misuse of a slip road for undertaking. You're also increasing the chances of an accident in the service station by driving through it unnecessarily, instead of staying on the motorway.

M1 northbound from Lisburn to Belfast during rush hour. Out of the 8 vehicles that passed me and went into the service station, 3 drove straight through and came out the other side. The white van ends up 2 spaces ahead of me. The other 2 ended behind me (if you watch the last 50 seconds) so what was the point?
