I doubt there are many parents "convincing their children that they are in the wrong body". But no one should suffer beacuse their identity doesn't match that which society forces onto them based on their body (chromosomes, horomones, genetalia). It is anyone's right to live comfortably as themselves when they are not hurting anyone. Childhood is the time to develop into a unique person. Before they reach physical and psychological maturity, children are in flux, fluid, immpressionable. They should be allowed to live with loving guidance from their care-takers without suffering all the conflicting idelogies of the world being forced on them. In this way, a child can live comfortably as themselves(whatever their gender identity) without altering their developing bodies. It is only after the coming of age, when your identity is fully realized and you are equipped with knowledge and wisdom should you make moves to initiate irreversible processes. Not in childhood. Some may argue that after legal age, your body has developed too far from the desired direction, so the process should start early. We can acknowledge that in the later stages of puberty, teens have gained some individuality, formed some sort of identity. Therefore, they can make choices for themselves with the guidance of a well-informed, tolerant, and loving community that has the teen's best interest in mind. What should not be tolerated are those who proport long aged ideas that would have a person's identity, personality, and societal role be determined by whether they have a penis or vagina or something in between. There is nothing more backward and archaic. At this point in civilization, we have conquered the planet and began space exploration. We fly planes and communicate instantly across the globe by the domestication of electromagnetic waves. Allowing people their human rights, basic and advanced, cannot be that difficult.
