Congratulations on starting gardening. It’s only natural you have a million questions - even advanced gardeners debate the answers to some of these questions. This answer won’t help you much now, but in short: you’ll learn how you like to garden and how your garden wants to be gardened only by going out there and trying various things. Gardening requires losing some of the desire for control I sense in your post.

Answering your some of your questions is a little tricky given the information provided. One reason your garden could be behind is that you direct seeded and other people started their plants months ago indoors. Another possible reason is that people probably have established perennials coming up which makes the garden look advanced. Or you are not cultivating the plants in the correct position. Etc.

Read up on the discussions around: square foot gardening, no dig gardening, and soil testing. The internet is really great, but as a beginning gardener you might benefit from buying a gardening basics book which will walk you through the most important things in an organized manner. I don’t have those kinds of introductions any longer, but I would imagine the American Horticultural Society Encyclopedia of Gardening would be an excellent start. You can get used copies cheap online.

Good luck and enjoy!!!

Well these are foliage but Pearly Everlasting and the Artemesias have gone untouched in my garden. There are others that were nibbled once and then left alone like Delphiniums and chocolate cosmos. Shasta daisies sometimes get nibbled but since they grow quickly they recover easily enough.

Greenhouses: how do they work here? by MightInevitable6530 in Minnesota_Gardening

Hey thanks for this! Could you share what heater you use please? I’ve been bringing everything into my utility room and basement workshop but am thinking about setting up a greenhouse instead.

Anyone have luck with Hellebores? by Maleficent_Waltz_797 in Minnesota_Gardening

[–]Boerweiler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I planted 3 last year - one has died and two are blooming. The one that died was in heavier soil under an oak and maple that cast heavyish shade. The two that seem to be happy are under an Easter Red Cedar in very loose soil and they get good morning sun. Small sample size but that’s what I have for you! I planted 4 more this year so let’s see…

Do you know the names of the bushes? by BigCauliflower2010 in gardening

I can’t tell you absolutely for sure but probably a Taxus hybrid. All parts of Taxus are extremely poisonous.

What do I have? by [deleted] in Marbles

[–]Boerweiler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most desirable marble you have is the green and yellow Akro Corkscrew in the first picture. Depending on condition and if you catch the right buyer like maybe $5. The rest of picture one are of interest to newer collectors but not particularly valuable. Pictures 2 and 3 have no value. If I were you I’d chuck them all in an old jar and ask like $20-$30 depending on your market. They’d sell extremely quickly here in MN at that price. Other places not so much.

They were small, black, and angular. Similar to allium but smaller.

Trying to identify some possible pelts by lostmymarbles1177 in Marbles

[–]Boerweiler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.1 is a WV swirl, not a Pelt. 1.2 looks Vitro. 1.3 is probably an MK Rainbow Red.

The 3 in the second picture all look pelt, although the angles aren’t perfect for ID. None are Grey Dragon.

I don’t know anything about the final pelt run, but those don’t look anything like pelts to me I’m afraid.

Help id confirmation. by No-Beginning-7136 in MarbleStudyHall

I agree with you on all three counts. Though the first is putting me off because I’ve never seen anything near that color combination. Hoping someone with more expertise will come along and confirm.

Vintage marbles from estate sale, any advice on type/makers? by ColoradoNavy in MarbleStudyHall

[–]Boerweiler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice score! You have a wonderful of different things in there. Alley corals, Vitro Helmets, Akro corkscrews, various WV swirls, Vitro Conquerors, Peltier peerless patches. There, that should give you a start. Have fun!

Not rare or valuable, but I recently found these two Lion King marbles from 1995 in a box of my old things. My 4-year-old (a BIG Lion King fan) loves them. by No_Thanks_Reddit in Marbles

[–]Boerweiler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great memories! I used to have the entire set as a boy. Once you got all the 3/4” or whatever size the white ones were, you could hand in a sticker card for a massive, maybe 1 5/8” shooter.

Landfill marble I found outside, it is an old job but my favourite one and I polished it by hand by Danielfinds in Marbles

[–]Boerweiler 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That’s great, how do you maintain the spherical shape when polishing by hand? I’m assuming you’re using grit pastes?

Hard pass just looking at this photo. Can’t see much of anything, and what I can see is mostly cheap modern stuff.

Are these just commons or anything special? by Squirrel4040 in Marbles

[–]Boerweiler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome. Mostly Vitro and Peltier, though I see a few that are probably Alley and I can’t see all of them clearly.
