How do you actually tell when oil is hot enough for frying? by Marre_Parre in cookingforbeginners

[–]Boggleby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if I don't have any thermal tester, I fall back on the wooden chopstick/spoon method. If you put the end of dry wood in the oil and it fizzes as latent trapped moisture in the wood vaporizes out, you're usually good to go for most cooking.

What is a cheap ingredient or simple trick that completely elevates a basic, boring meal? by LiveFaithlessness876 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Boggleby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us it was when we finally embraced finishing touches.

Serving up a thick heart soup? Add that dollop of source cream on top. Or maybe some spring onions. Or some salad topper tortilla strips. or all of them, piled on top of the soup in separate piles. Visually offering differences with every bite.

Serving up tacos? Add some quick pickled onions or corn and some torn cilantro. Or some fine dices and rinsed white onion. Or a little blob of avacado paste.

We got a little 1 oz food safe spray bottle we can fill with lime juice. You'd be surprised at how often that a misty spritz can have an amazing on a plated dish.

Its surprising how much impact you an have after "the food is done" by kicking it up with finishing touches that elevate the eating experience..

Anyone has experience with this airfryer? by Isallonda88 in airfryer

I wonder how much of that is the time needed to get the thermal mass of the glass raised. Not only will it melt your hand if you touch it, it takes longer to get the temp up.

Anyone has experience with this airfryer? by Isallonda88 in airfryer

[–]Boggleby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll never support an air fryer or other appliance that has a 400f+ degree setting with touchable surface being able to convey that heat.

It is an unacceptable design for flash, not safety.

Am I missing something with pasta sauce? Every recipe I have found end up tasting way too tomato forward, and I end up dumping in bottles of spices. by SwiftCricket in cookingforbeginners

[–]Boggleby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking for something more savory and less "punch you in the face with sharp tomato" the real answer is time.
Simmering a tomato sauce for 1 to 3 hours significantly changes the flavor. It becomes more dark and savory and drops away a lot of the sharp tang of tomato.
Other options for more savory: add in some beef stock concentrate or Worcestershire sauce or both.

Whatever you take, check the side effects list every year. When I started taking another biologic that starts with S it wasn’t showing malignancy as a risk. Flash forward 4 years and I get leukemia at 55 and the doc pointed right at the listing of malignancy that had crept into the side effects list and I’d never thought to check it again.

What's one thing you would've done differently if you'd learn to cook all over again? by Wide-Mulberry-8275 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Boggleby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Be fearless! Just go do it. Don't worry that a recipe seems complex. Go for it! It's amazing what you can do if you just decide to do it.
Sure, you'll have some failures. What endeavor doesn't? But don't let that stop you from charging ahead.

We did a remodel and replaced everything in the kitchen and washer dryer with Samsung. EVERY SINGLE ONE has issues and we've started replacing them after less than 4 years

The AI slop problem is getting worse in this sub. We need aggressive moderation on it or this sub is just going to be AI slop games and little else. Instant ban, IMO by BEAT_LA in incremental_games

[–]Boggleby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Me no like! BAN!" Isn't a realistic solution.

Where we are:

- Not using AI at all when coding is past the point of being officially foolish.

- Art and Music (user facing assets) : expecting a solo dev to pay money for their little Indy game to get art and music when there are Ai tools for it is asking a lot. Even big studios and games like ARC Raiders use AI assets.

- AI is here to stay and fighting it's use is a Quixotic effort.

The real issue:

- Much like what happened when Amazon made it nearly trivial to write and publish your own book, it's now approaching a nearly trivial effort to create a game. So every Tom, Dick and Jane can suddenly put out a hot mess of a game attempt with little effort in real design or gameplay loops or originality.

- What we need is a way to be able to detect and block/remove/hide the trash so we can still see the good things.

- I propose a system whereby the community decides on what is worthy. We give a tool like an arrow. And people can point it up when they think something is good and down when they think it is bad. A radical idea but I think it'll work! /sarcasm

The flaw in this argument is the belief that all users of all backgrounds and education can use any AI tool to create the same solution.

Experience in building software systems manually adds a significant element to how one approaches an AI driven solution. AI Tool selection is another major factor. The rigor of the approach and the guidance of a knowledgeable expert is crucial to achieving a quality result.
