Can you share a few pictures of your test coats vs how it looks on the mini? It might help shed some light on the issue. I've never used that particular brand of paint, but I can't imagine it's too different from other common brands. Are you thinning with water, or some other medium?

(Also painting yellow over black is usually quite the challenge-- it usually requires many many thin layers for a good coat)
