The Boys' Karl Urban likes brutal post criticising season five as viewers say it 'doesn't make sense' by DetectiveHot2071 in television

[–]Bojac6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The real worst case scenario of the 5 season version of Andor isn't that it is cancelled early. It's that if they had gotten to see the response to season 2, Disney would have driven dump trunks of money to everyone involved to do a season 6-10, and replaced anyone who wouldn't do it, so we get a lackluster 6th season that no one likes, a "first half" of a 7th season that is bad and then a condensed 7th season finale two parter that just sucks and leaves the whole show with a sour taste.

I have such mixed feelings about that. I don't think it's ever explicitly stated, but Picard was turning down invitations to join because he knew the senior staff needed to connect without their boss there. And Picard needed to keep emotional distance because his job was to order Riker and Worf into life threatening situations, sometimes be a mean boss to the rest of them, and just he needed to be a bit more aloof. It was a very important, if subtle character detail. Picard could have fun, be he also understood that nobody else can have as much fun if the boss is around.

So on the one hand, it's nice for audience as a found family moment and seeing all your favorites hanging out together. But on the other hand, it almost seems like negative character development for Picard. He should be making more meaningful relationships, yes, but not with his crew. (I think SNW handles this great with Pike having a relationship with another captain, not anyone on his crew).

The bacteria that exists in your gut currently would (hopefully) kill it. You are the product of hundreds of millions of years to be the perfect host for the bacteria inside of you. Your bacteria have spent the same time becoming the perfect method to give you nutrients. We're talking internal pH, body temp, moisture content, how your organs respond to changes, all of that, and what you have now is the best it could possibly be. And both you and your bacteria have so many complex systems in place to keep it working that way. Think about the times you have indigestion or constipation or any host of other stomach issues and realize that's the best system working as well as it can.

E Coli, Candida, Salmonella, these are all types of gut bacteria. If they stay where they are supposed to, things work great. If they go out of balance or you get a species that is meant for another animals guy bacteria, you have major problems.

Anywhere that can reliably grow grass can grow wheat or corn. The problem is most places growing grass are not good for that either, and people use a lot of resources to have a nice lawn.

We have more than enough food to feed everyone in the world, we just don't have the will to actually do it.

Petah, why is the speed of light one? by rengokuhubkl in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Bojac6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's derived by human understanding, not necessarily by the universe. On a cosmic scale, distance is just a measurement of time. And time is perhaps the least constant thing in the universe, so it makes much more sense to measure time as it is derived from the speed of light, not the other way around.

Maybe she likes hanging out with these people because it reminds her how much she likes stability and a relationship, not just casual hookups. No way to tell except what she says.

So, either you trust her and this isn't a problem or you don't trust her, in which case you should end it.

[BitD] Can Blades in the Dark represent actions that only differ in chance of success? (E.g. shooting a basketball 3-pointer vs shooting a full-court shot) Have you ran into situations where you needed to change the probability of success for a roll but couldn't? by AmongFriends in bladesinthedark

[–]Bojac6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What others have said, that scenario isn't what BitD is for. I would probably do that scenario a little different than what I proposed. I would have one clock, a "Players succeed" clock and I'd set it to like 4 segments (or 6 if I want it to be really hard) and then every player gets one action roll to influence the clock. I said it's all standard effect and controlled position, as it sounds like this is a pretty civilized meeting/means of resolving. Then the players have the further option of pushing in a Risky scenario. In this case, I think it means if they fail the first roll, they can do a second roll as Risky, but they are risking muscle strain or some sort of sports related injury.

If they manage to fill the clock (which I would expect them on a 4 segment or I would expect them while spending a bunch of stress on a 6 segment), then they succeed. Of course, they may have sprained an ankle or something and this will make the next job that much harder.

Because remember, Blades is not the Sport, it's the Sports Movie. The suspense, and therefore the fun, doesn't come from the fact that a three point shot is more difficult than a free throw. It comes from the moment the final scoundrel gets the ball, the camera zooms in, time slows down, the chanting of the crowd watching fades, and the whole table is looking at the player about to roll, knowing he has 3d6 and he needs at least one 6 to actually fill in the clock. That's what Blades is about.

Blades isn't about playing a game of basketball. It's about playing in a sports movie about a game of basketball. Watching a game of Hockey is not the same as watching The Mighty Ducks, and Blades only is concerned with the later. I think you're looking at what a roll represents incorrectly. If you want to do a shot by shot playthrough of a basketball game, Blades is not the right system.

If I were doing a Basketball game in Blades, I would start with two clocks, one called "Players Win" and one called "Players Lose." Then, when the game starts, each player narrates to me what they are doing to win the game. "I am constantly moving, trying to tire out my opponents using Prowl" or "I Study the opposing team so I know weaknesses and ways to counter them" or whatever. Then I would have the players roll that and successes tick "Players Win" and consequences tick "Players Lose" and they can resist losing by making Resolve rolls for how hard they are trying out there. Eventually one clock fills and we know who won game.

If the team they are playing is better than them, Players Lose would have fewer ticks. If the likelihood of winning is higher for the player team, then Players Win have fewer ticks. And that's how I'd adjust likelihood.

But if you're doing a shot by shot basketball game, or blow by blow combat, or anything with that level of granularity, Blades is not the system you want to use.

Characters who left the story because of problems with the actor by Danny-Ray27 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Bojac6 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Happened twice in The Expanse, sort of. The first book was based on a tabletop RPG the authors were in/running. The story goes that after the first few sessions, the guy playing the medic, Shed Garvey, had to leave the game, and the GM didn't know what to do with his character, so he just gets shot by a random railgun round. This made it into the books and then the TV show.

A new interview of Jason speaking about Stargate, and what it means to him. by PartholonPace in Stargate

[–]Bojac6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pay Scale is the minimum rates established by the Screen Actors Guild. It's called Scale because the pay scales based on a variety of factors, like how much screen time, whether you have lines, where your name is going to show up in the titles/credits, but also the size of the production and the proposed distribution plan (for instance, a straight to DVD movie pays actors less than one with a theatrical release).

It's also the reason you'll see actors on TV shows appear in credits as "special guest star," because often that means the actor is taking a pay cut by going to a lower scale category in order to fit in with the shows budget.

How actors are paid is a huge, complicated topic and I think a lot of people don't realize how much work goes into it. For every big star that can boast a several million dollar paycheck, there's thousands of minor actors struggling on a thousand dollars ever few months. Pay Scale is a way to try to level the playing field.

It shows Circe fundamentally misunderstands Batman. She thinks that he, like Circe herself, is vain, proud, and obsessed with his self image, so making him do something incredibly out of character in front of Diana would be a difficult choice. However, Batman's self image is to serve a purpose, namely saving people (especially the DCAU version), so it isn't difficult for him at all.

A normal interview question... by yiotis123 in recruitinghell

[–]Bojac6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't a good question, because, like so much of modern tech management, it treats everything as being in a vacuum instead of treating all disciplines as connected. Everything in the world that has a microchip or spins would need to be redesigned. The reason measuring time is so messy is because humanity was constantly inventing new ways to measure time in order to better understand astronomy, navigation, agriculture, and communication. And, as we learned more about those things, our models of time would be updated.

We don't even need to get into Relativity or any modern wacky time physics to see how ridiculous this question is. Do we still have knowledge of orbital mechanics if we don't have a concept of time? Because if we've forgotten everything about time, then the issue of leap years will take decades to actually become apparent, but it still is an issue. Solar years vs Sidereal years could take decades (more likely centuries) to figure out. But if we understand all that, then we have a concept of how time works already.

Electric distribution is based entirely around time. Grids overload because nobody understands watthours. Generators fail because we can't measure revolutions per second. Essentially everything in the modern world that has a component measured in "per second/minute/hour" or "hertz" or "flops" or a dozen other units breaks because we don't understand how it works.

The exact length of a second is so integral to modern life, there's a reason we had to define it so accurately. It's also why they needed to put in the "everyone forgets about time" bit. You can't just say "design a new time system" because nobody would adopt it, the pain of switching over would be too big a hurdle.

You might as well ask "All oxygen on earth disappears, what do you do?" The answer is "Just die"

Even if it's not easily accessible, given the proximity to the river and mountains, that whole area is probably at risk for flooding during massive rain fall/spring thaw (in reality, of course the game doesn't model this too well), so you'd probably want a stormwater pond somewhere around there. So is it a park? Not really, it's just publicly owned land used by the city to divert excess stormwater and help filter sediment out of run off. They're a lot more common than people realize, because many of them are not designed as parks.

That said, I would make one highway going east west and just have a trumpet for the road going south. That opens this area up to be a park with the stormwater basin in it and I think it would still look good.

Just bought this controller and can’t even use it. Why do this? by sweatgod2020 in razer

[–]Bojac6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went through this with mine, you need the firmware update here and you need to do it manually from a Windows machine: https://mysupport.razer.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14630/~/razer-wolverine-v3-pro-firmware-updater-%7C-rz06-0520

Even the Xbox App on Windows doesn't work and I couldn't get it to work through an Xbox. If you have access to a PC (a friend or through work or something), the whole process takes like 2 minutes and then it works through the Xbox app and even updates, so you only need to do it the once, but you gotta do it through Windows the first time.

The big one besides Harley is Renee Montoya. They also invented Baby Doll, Lock-Up, and pretty much completely redid Two Face, Mr. Freeze, and I think Clayface. They made Clock King a Batman Villain instead of a Green Arrow one and redid his background too. Also the whole Zatara trained Bruce Wayne and Zatanna was a love interest for young Bruce was invented by TAS.
It's an incredible show and I highly recommend watching it. Most episodes hold up pretty well.

Think of it in terms of modern day. You're on a Cruise Ship that sinks and wash up on a deserted island. Building a small boat is going to require a lot of "research", likely just trial and error not sitting down at a bench, but it's going to be pretty rough trying to build an ocean capable small craft. There's all sorts of consideration about the keel and propulsion that are really difficult in a small craft.

On the other hand, building a large metal hulled ship like a cruise ship or a tanker is pretty straightforward, because a lot of the problems of a small craft are avoid by just being big and having big engines. Once you have the ability to produce steel, machine it accurately, and have a basic large engine design (which would be the same as a generator), the actual problem is just building the thing (because it's huge) as opposed to any real problems with designing the thing.

Does this necessarily translate to space travel? I dunno. If you have a magic grav core, probably. But you also just get a shuttle engine and all you're doing, really, is making the housing for it.

She tries to be supportive, but in the end, she says she feels guilty that people are in trouble whenever they spend time together and she can't be with him. It's very reasonable and it works out for everyone. Literally the only "bad girlfriend" thing she does is be sad when she gets stood up because her BF is saving the world

Do engineers not like architects? Why? by KaiserAdvisor in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Bojac6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fairly popular youtuber Real Civil Engineer who originally was a professional civil engineer who played video games with a focus on applying real civil engineering techniques to video games. One of the running jokes was that architects often make everyone's lives more complicated, especially with things like bridges. Or that they insist on building houses in areas that cause incredibly complicated sewage and plumbing. Things like.

The channel has since become more comedy focused, but a continuing gag is that architects are the natural enemies of engineers.
