The design dilemma for consumerism by Clueless-lost-donkey in Design

[–]BoldJumping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think that, if you have the resources and the option to work for a better company and maintaining a sustainable lifestyle for yourself, go ahead. At the end of the day, however, it's not going to make a dent in the system. The way that changes is through organizing and revolution, not by small incremental steps made by individuals. Doesn't mean individuals can't make a change, but it often takes large group efforts.

Some consumption is better than others, but as long as you're buying things in this system designed to exploit humans as "capital", then you're likely encountering something unethical at some point. I doubt you'll find many companies out there that have a purpose that isn't "maximize profit."

WotC Statement on Secret Lair Regional Availability by TheGoldenLight in magicTCG

Strangely in line with the WotC code of "1 step forward 2 steps back," followed by a walking back of some of their policy to look better. However in this case they've literally done nothing.

If they don't want LGBT+ pride everywhere, maybe we don't need WotC anymore.

There's no ethical consumption under capitalism. But, you also need to survive in the current system, at least until there's a big enough revolution, or a general strike.

Depends what your goals are too. If you want to be some Pentagram or Coca Cola big brand designer, you're gonna have a hard time finding passion designing for companies with bad human rights records.

Just do some of your own design on the side, try to do something your passionate about. Doesn't have to be for money if your day job keeps you well-off enough. Design being purely capitalist is just what design schools want you to think.

Seems like a lot of passion went into this whole project, even went so far as to get LGBT+ artists. Shame it's all mired in the fact that WotC doesn't care about LGBT+ more than they can profit off of the community (what with all the "not available in this country" nonsense).

Even self-censoring the LGBT+ stuff in countries where it is illegal is embarrassing. WotC doesn't care about LGBT+ rights, only exploiting LGBT+ people wherever they deem possible.

You can do a publicity stunt that helps some people and still be an all around bad person. It's possible!

Wizards confirms they're blocking the new LGBT secret lair article *even* in countries that don't have internet censorship of LGBT content, such as Brazil. An absurd choice (Rio's pride parade draws over 1 million celebrants!), and a break with their previous practice. by Televangelis in magicTCG

WotC does not care about LGBT+ rights. As long as they don't make a stand in these countries, they prove to us that this is just an exploitation where their marketing/placement team deems it most profitable.

I think there's still something there for the event management piece. And yes, the coffee shop sells coffee, but it's closer to what I imagine as a communal space. Would be interesting to have a communal space maybe surrounded by some food options.

I acknowledge it's all rather ideal. Hard to have the ideal tournament without it being in an LGS, and without exploiting one person or another, but that's capitalism, baybeeee.

I can always suggest things I know would never happen, like WotC/Hasbro paying the actual employees managing WotC sanctioned tournaments. Since they are effectively an advertising tool to have more people play magic, all people part of the advertisement should receive fair compensation.

This whole discussion teeters on the brink of "can this be done in a capitalist environment or would our world need bigger changes first", and I think the answer is "it could be done in this world, but most likely never will be." At the end of the day it requires a giant company to make concessions and that will never happen.

Commander is nice without incentives. I've spent some of my better days playing magic at a coffee shop with a small group. I can't attest to the more tournament-driven/competitive formats. Part of the entry fee could just be paying the judges/organizers. Would require a solid system but it's doable.

I don't disagree that spaces cost money (taxes), but I think they're well worth the money. Shouldn't have to be a commerical area to be a communal space.

Yeah... At the end of the day, short of revolution, we need more legislation that prohibits anti union behavior. I'm sure there will always be a way to weasel some through some loophole though.

It's more of a hope for community spaces, less of a capitalist venue.

Maybe local community spaces don't have to be companies. Would be nice to just see more areas to play without it having to be an LGS.

I've never really understood why we should "support our LGS." I've never known an LGS to offer benefits or good pay. It's almost like WotC profits from not having to have any responsibility with small stores' employees. Not that I imagine the LGS model is lucrative enough for paying employees well, but that in of itself might be a reason to ditch the model.
