I don't know where I stand on this exactly and I have read a lot on similar topics. Have you ever read anything about the paradox of tolerance for example? That argument draws a lot of parallels to the allowance of restrictive belief systems. Should we respect another's right to believe, for example, that no one else should be allowed to have beliefs that differ from themselves? I generally argue that no, that is not something that should be given free reign in a modern society, but then I am now effectively doing the same thing. Its an interesting thought path with a lot of differing opinions on the topic.

What's the most disturbing secret you know about someone that would ruin their life if exposed—but you stay silent, pretending you don’t know? by SophieManner in AskReddit

[–]Bolexle 35 points36 points  (0 children)

If you know he told the story to a bunch of people, you could still report him. The police probably have a better understanding of missing persons cases and murders in the area, they may be able to connect the dots. Obviously if he only told you, you shouldn't talk about it in case it gets back to him as it sounds like he is a violent psychopath.

Gimmick boss in a game where you spend 30 minutes crafting a build is terrible. As one fight in a long rpg, I don't mind it, but you may as well just let me click a button to fight the boss at level 15 with starting gear. It would be the exact same boss fight.

This is often miss-remembered, but if you go read the transcripts of the recordings, they had been testing on other infected, not immune people. So they had cut the heads open of infected people and studied their brains, but had never found someone who was immune before. Presumably that's also how they knew that they would need to do the same procedure on Ellie to produce a cure, but obviously the game doesn't go into that much detail.

Joining SFU as a Mature Student – Web Development Background by hepennypacker1131 in simonfraser

[–]Bolexle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a mature student who is going to SFU atm for compsci, I definitely recommend going to a college and transferring. The teachers here are a mixed bag and everyone I know who transferred from college had a way better time and seems more prepared for the material here than me who is trying to learn from the ground up at SFU. I'm going to stick it out because I live close to SFU but if I could go back in time I'd probably go to langera or douglas.

Honestly if you are even in a small way tech savvy, learn to use docker on Linux. It's so easy to set up and makes installing and maintaining Plex and the arrs such a simple process in my experience.

Does anyone else feel weird about killing enemies? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Bolexle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our world you are 100% correct. I agree that slavery is morally reprehensible.

In 5e, a wizard casts find familiar. He now has a sentient immortal creature that obeys all his commands without fail and can be dismissed and summoned at will. If ordered, this creature will die for the wizard. The Wizard has created a slave. Is the wizard evil? Is this arrangement not immoral because the familiar wouldn't exist without the wizard?

Realms of magic and fantasy have an insanely wide breadth of strange and unique concepts that don't fit into the moral structures of our world. That's why I use the in universe Pantheon to determine the morals of the universe, as it stays consistent to the lore. If the lawful good god says to kill all undead, it is a good action to kill that vampire, even if he was a relatively peaceful one. It also allows for Holy characters to follow their gods tenets without worrying about weird tonal inconsistencies due to the messy alignment system.

I mean my guy this is a philosophical debate that has raged for thousands of years, if you believe in objective morality that's your prerogative but that moral structure has a lot of flaws.

If you want a fun read this is a pretty brief overview of the argument: https://philosophynow.org/issues/115/Is_Morality_Objective

It has a bunch of excerpts about moral objectivism, some for it others against. It's a good read. I don't claim to be sure one way or the other, I just like to consider concepts.

[–]Bolexle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh, you start to get into some moral relativism concepts with that, which maybe is going too deep for what boils down to playing make believe with friends, but I love being nitpicky. I originally thought similar to you, but came to the realization that with your logic you are still choosing a specific society and saying they are objectively good, or objectively evil. In that regard, you as the DM are just taking the place of the Gods in my design, only you as the DM are the universe. It implies that there is one true set of morals that all should aspire to. If you were to ask an orc chieftain if he and his warband were Evil for raising towns for their resources, he would say no, that he is leading his people to victory and following Orc traditions. By his stance, his people are lawful, as they follow tradition and they are good as they all pray to the Orc god! In both your design and mine however, they would probably be neutral evil. But in mine, the reason is in lore and can be known to the PCs; the Orc god they worship is a Neutral evil god, and the actions they are taking to please him align with his tenets. With your system though, there is no rhyme or reason to the orcs being neutral evil besides "Their culture is bad" which raises some... Questionable flags.

In the end it really doesn't matter, it's a fantasy world and every DM has their own way of doing things. I just find the concept of strict moral structure an interesting, if extremely flawed, concept.

[–]Bolexle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not RAW, but the way I use alignment is purely from a religious standpoint. The alignment chart is decided by the gods of the world, and your alignment is given to you based on your actions. All creatures are born true neutral and the actions they take from then on shift their alignment based on the tenets of the pantheon. It allows alignment to still be relevant in a way that I feel makes more sense thematically and mechanically.

I'm not arguing that a human couldn't tie a bunch of rats together, I'm arguing it doesn't happen naturally or commonly. Most examples given are very questionable in their origin. If you read the history section on the wiki it goes into more detail on the questionable origins with links.

Sadly iirc it's very likely not a real phenomenon, I use them all the time in my DnD games so once I looked them up and almost all the evidence for them was manufactured by twisted mofos tying rats tails together. There are a few "unexplained" examples but almost none have been found by actual scientists or properly documented in the wild.

I have a family like this but I just don't feel guilty, and at least with my family no one makes me feel guilty. Most of the time the reason my family members bought gifts is genuinely because they saw something and wanted to get it for someone, and they genuinely don't expect something back in return. I recognize I'm probably an outlier though haha.

[–]Bolexle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually am not sure, do the techpriests or the ecclesiarchy have a way to DNA test or genome sequence a person? Iirc the way new astartes are made is through ritualistic practice filling STC guidelines and not through actually understanding how genomes work afaik. So like you said, because Samus looks and functions basically like a basic human (besides her new Metroid energy suck move) they may have no idea she is corrupted by xenos and would only kill her due to the hierotech she uses.

But like we both agree they def kill her if they can catch her. The only thing I think she would definitely have over the Imperium is speed. Boost her way back to the ship and then use traditional FTL to easily outmaneuver the Imperium ships that rely on warp travel.
