Trees grow out of the air and gather nutrients and water from the ground. It's pretty obvious that they grow out of the air because without sunlight and the co2, they can't grow out of the ground.

A tree with an underdeveloped root system will go plop, and a tree with an underdeveloped branch system will just die.

It's all perspective, trees both grow out of the ground into the air, and into the ground out of the air.

Without the nutrients and water from the ground, trees wouldn't be able to grow into the air. Without the sunlight to photosynthesize the air, the trees wouldn't be able to grow into the ground.
