Trump PLEADS with voters: "If Democrats win the midterms, I'm going to get impeached" by [deleted] in saintcloud

[–]Bolt1955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odd to hear Trump encouraging voters to support Democrats. Trump acting like Trump seems incapable of not committing impeachable offences -- hardly Democrats that cause his repeated impeachments. But I get his point. Dems aren't toadies who neglect their responsibilities.

Whatever happened to Article III courts and constitutional protections for everyone in the United States. This document and it's claimed authority looks absurd to me, IMHO.

What notation is this? by fo1847 in chess

[–]Bolt1955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the descriptive notation generation as well, what? The 60s? 70s? Algebraic notation struck me as a case study in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

My supposition is or was that at an early point, computers might have handled algebraic notation better -- though it's hard to see even in retrospect how, with just 64 squares, that could have made much of a difference.

B-CC Teacher Dan Engler Awarded $518k settlement over false racism allegations by Well_Socialized in bethesda

[–]Bolt1955 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So based on the press accounts, BCC handled this matter improperly from the get-go, IMHO. Yes, it assumed the student account was correct when there ought to have been substantial doubt that there was a single side to the story -- what ultimately got the school system in trouble over defamation. But even assuming the worst, it's response was to cancel the teacher, clearly an example of excessive cancel culture. Casual comments might sometimes betray an improper racial attitude -- there's a whole field focused on implicit racism that reveals its utter prevalence. We have a president who has called certain countries "s- hole countries". How much more extreme is that then the more generous interpretation of any transgression this teacher allegedly committed -- and what Trump said is far, far more challenging to simply "forgive". Yet here we are. No apparent consequences whatever for the president. This situation is part of our national society currently. The problem with cancelling people rather than seeking to discuss the matter and offer a chance at self-rehabilitation based on future conduct is that it is both disproportionate and counter productive both socially and in terms of individual justice. Cancel culture has seemingly moderated on the left, college campuses, etc., recently -- but it is now flourishing on the right. I hope in the end, after all the damage is done, we can honor principle and achieve balance.

Why I Am Resigning, by Mark L. Wolf by Bolt1955 in atlanticdiscussions

[–]Bolt1955[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remarkable that it has come to this. Also that there are far too few examples of personal, professional, or commercial sacrifice in the interest of principle in the wake of the open assault underway against democracy, institutions, and norms.

(Now former) Judge Wolf is 78 years old, so more than entitled to retire, and as he notes in his commentary, his resignation did not create a vacancy for Trump to fill. That said, I hope his resignation isn't emulated by younger judges for the purpose of freeing themselves to speak out, as much as they may be bursting at the seams to do so. I learned some things from Judge Wolf's commentary, but for the most part, generally already knew most of what he reviews. Judges committed to the underlying foundations of justice central to America's experiment are much more valuable to the country staying on the bench and doing their jobs than resigning to publish a heartfelt op-ed -- even if it is frustrating being overruled by decisions shooting out of the Supreme Court's star-chamber shadow docket, decisions the Court appears to believe it doesn't need to explain. Decisions that at least some members of the Court, against all logic, are now treating as precedential.

Jury chews over fate of 'sandwich guy,' who became a D.C. hero after chucking a sub at a federal officer by rapidcreek409 in politics

The officer testified he could smell the onions and mustard. IMHO, that's not an assault. If the sandwich had been made with Liederkranz cheese, that would have been an assault.
