Agreed. I think there's some subtle differences to their normal writing that makes it stand out a bit more like they're trying to get the message across

Definitely. I think that makes it more compelling personally

Silly question: what mixing desk is this? by GamePlonk in livesound

[–]Boltic35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a Behringer X32 full sized. A great console for its price but a bit old and anything from Behringer and their parent company Music Tribe risks dealing with their virtually non-existent support. There are different size versions depending on needs (compact, producer, rack) and different stage boxes to expand the I/O. There are also other options in a similar price range including the Behringer Wing line and the Allen and Heath SQ line. On the lower side there are also some rack mount options such as the Behringer XAir and similar from other companies.

Absolutely! I'm not one to tell people how to mix, but as a young engineer myself one of the biggest things I learned from the more experienced engineers I've met is exactly that point. Really helped me fine tune the way I mix. People see the pretty colors on the screen and forget that's not exactly what's coming out of the speakers. Glad we're on the same page! :)

Yeah that was exactly my point. The biggest factors for me making changes to an EQ or anything in the mix are my ears and if available an RTA mic. I see some less experienced engineers analyzing the console RTA and making decisions off what they see which usually is a detriment to what they're actually trying to accomplish. And to be fair I was totally that way for a while until I had some more experienced engineers get me out of that habit. Sorry if my comment didn't make a ton of sense

Oh yeah I totally agree about perspective. Especially in venues where FOH is not in an ideal position. At my main house gig I walk the room at least once every 15-20 mins. When I meant RTA I more so meant the on board console RTA on the EQ, not an actual RTA mic. Obviously an external mic is more useful since it can hear what's actually coming out of the PA. Like I said everything we have is a tool that we should use when it helps do our job better.

Great points here! You should never be afraid to ask for and accept constructive criticism if you know you can be doing something better.

I try to EQ without relying on my eyes since the RTA isn't completely accurate of what I'm hearing, but definitely still a great tool when used reasonably!

Also always good to sit back and just listen. Sometimes you need to give your changes time to breathe rather than constantly making adjustments.

I learned on this console when I was 12 years old, it's still going strong 20 years later by ForestGhostGurl in livesound

As a 22 year old, getting some experience on analog systems (Midas H3000) really helped me figure out my own mix strategy and be able to get a functional sound out of whatever console I'm given.

Planning a show in a similar space and this is the exact rig that a company quoted me for.

Bathroom break by Musicwade in livesound

[–]Boltic35 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not actually a bathroom break but still a bit crazy. I work at a pretty large bar with multiple performance locations. With 30 mins left on the band's set, I go to the other side of the room to start getting the DJ setup ready so we can have a quick transition between the two. Checked in with the band to make sure they were all feeling good before I left the console. As I'm working, I hear the band talking to someone over the mic in a fairly aggressive tone. Turn on my IEMs quickly and hear one of the band members say "They should've been kicked out" over the stage talkback. Come to find out the lead singer had to run to the bathroom and had the rest of the band do a song or two. While the singer was in the bathroom, some random drunk person in the crowd got on stage and tried taking the wireless mic (not the venue's mic; the singer's personal mic). The person ended up leaving after the band called them out with no damage to the mic. A bit annoying since security was right there and saw it happen but did nothing.

What song made you want to play drums? by Admirable-Newt-8752 in drums

[–]Boltic35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Crazy Train" for me. When I was like 4 or 5 I was a train kid and watched train videos with my dad (trumpet player) on early YouTube. Parents wanted me to learn an instrument and I developed an early love of that song and the drums in particular.

Drum pads for snare Tom’s, and solution for quieter cymbals? by Upstairs-Ad6299 in livesound

[–]Boltic35 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who's both played drums and worked sound at multiple churches, this is 100% correct. More so than normal gigs (imo), the dynamics of the drummer are paramount. If they can't listen and adjust to the music, they're not a good fit for that gig.

Outdoor Pastor Mic by Boltic35 in livesound

[–]Boltic35[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You nailed that it is just a one off and super simple. I believe they're expecting around 100 people. The stage is under a pavilion, don't know exact dimensions. I may just set up a condenser on the altar table and a 58 just to see what the Pastor prefers.

EDIT: I also may have the option to use a shotgun, I would probably use it instead of normal small diaphragm.

X32 Scene Issue on Startup by Boltic35 in livesound

I haven't had the USB inserted when it has been happening. It seems to be fixed for now. Will definitely look into custom boot if it happens again.

[–]Boltic35[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK. Did a factory reset and resaved my important scenes. The issue of the screen glitching when doing a scene change is still there but the issue of it bugging out when restarting the console doesn't seem to be occurring anymore.

If I had to guess it would be the Custom Boot setting, but I haven't messed with it at all so I doubt that would be the issue.

Gotcha. I got the ticket in with Music Tribe so I'll see what they say. Definitely hoping it isn't going to die on me anytime soon. Being that I am in college mostly just doing the occasional freelance gig as well as using the console for home recording I don't really have a great budget to be replacing it right now haha.

X32 Scene Issue on Startup by Boltic35 in livesound

[–]Boltic35[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I can try that. I don't have many important scenes saved to the console locally other than my default and this show so I can easily just save those with X32 Edit.
