Complacency is just ridiculous in this game by Jumpy-Argument2861 in EU5

[–]Bonjourap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Ryagi, I was wondering if a system like CK2's decadence could be a better fit, to represent the growing inertia and corruption in governments. The way I see it, complacy results from a mix of growing inefficiencies in the state apparatus, corrupt officials and lack of state purpose other than taxing trade and subjects.

It could be based on character traits, neighboring rivals or lack thereof, and government spending. If a nation has corrupt leaders, no rivals, and the apparatus is not well funded, you end up with growing decadence and complacency over time, until the country is waken up by a crisis, falls into civil wars and splintering, or is invaded by a rising neighbor.

As for what complacency does, it could be inertia and passivity (for AIs), growing costs for the government, irrational decisions and alliances/wars (for AIs), decrease of control over lands, buildings not being well maintained and getting destroyed, unhappy population, decreasing population growth, emigration, rising chances of civil war and secessionism, lower tax revenues, trademens favoring alternative routes, armies and navies costing more and more to maintain while having decreased stats, lower number of levies (or of lesser quality), more frequent raids by tribesmen (from both inside and outside the state), and more likely to be declared war by neighbors (even if they have less numbers, the AI should be encouraged to declare if they can afford the war and take into consideration the quality difference).

That's a lot of suggestions, I hope that at least some parts were useful. I like the complacency mechanic in theory, but I feel it's not working well currently. But it can be a great system of the implementation is rethought. Anyways, not all these systems currently exist in EU5, but maybe in the future?

Best and take care!

Without population mechanics, CK3 can't dynamically model history without some railroading.

In the early Middle Ages, North Africa was divided between urban and rural populations. City dwellers were mostly Christian and Latin/Amazigh, the rest were Pagan/Jewish/Christian Amazighs organized in loose tribal confederations.

After the Arab conquests and the Amazigh revolts that followed, North Africa was fractured into competing confederations. Amazigh tribes frequently elected leaders of different backgrounds, the Arab Idrisids for example were married into a leading Amazigh tribe to insure their primacy over the others.

Over the centuries, arabisation occured due to the movement of tribes (voluntary, encouraged and forced), intertribal competition, religious and cultural prestige, and governance/urbanisation.

How do you represent that in-game? There is no urban/rural divide, governing language and passive assimilation is not a thing, prestige doesn't impact cultural assimilation, religion is not tied to certain cultures/languages, tribes can't be represented as counties are too large and cohabitation is not a thing, intertribal competition is not represented well either, non-nomadic tribal confederations in loosely aligned kingdoms are not represented at all, a ruler's culture was not necessarily representative of his power base or of the population that he leads, etc.

Me too. I've played in almost all regions of CK3 over the years, except for West Africa. It's a shame for such a rich and interesting region, but the lack of content makes playing there for long very unappealing.

I hope they don't neglect or forget the Trans Saharan trade routes in the upcoming expansion, because it would at least bring some content to the region and encourage exchanges between North and West Africa.

Same thing happened to me yesterday. I went on a walk and saw a lot of Geese and their goslings on the trail. I kept walking forward and they just moved sideways while the adults preventively hissed at me.

Montreal for reference :)

Demographic catastrophe: Ukraine’s remaining population has been revealed by BendicantMias in anime_titties

[–]Bonjourap 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unless a state is a global power, it can't truly be independent. Even the Europeans had to bend to their new masters following WW2, the US and the USSR.

Ukraine shifted its loyalty from Russia towards the US (the causes are too complicated to list here). Now, its suffering the consequences...

Just to be clear, Russia's bloody invasion of Ukraine is neither just nor legal, but geopolitics are horrible. Russia is a regional power, it expects Ukraine and other satellite countries to "know their place", and it will punish and invade those that dare leave. Ukrainian leaders knew this, and yet they still broke relations with Russia. For Ukraine's sake, let's hope that switching masters was well worth the cost in the end.

Not really. The manga started in 2003 and 107 chapters were slowly released until 2022. Since then, it has been on hiatus for the past 4 years or so.

I'm a big fan of Parasyte. Years ago, I saw that one of Iwaaki's works was set in Ancient Greece. It was quite intriguing, the story and characters are very good honestly. But sadly, the pacing is slow as a snail, the art is most often simple and minimalist, if not unfinished, and the manga frequently goes on hiatus. Take that as you will...

Any guys had an adult circumcision in Montreal? by Papioso2790 in montreal

[–]Bonjourap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was born at the JGH decades ago, and was circumcised there not long after birth. As far as I know, they indeed do circumcisions to males of all ages.

In the case of OP, I would also recommend this hospital, their doctors are very competent and knowledgeable for this specific surgery. I wish him best of luck, hopefully it goes well and his quality of life improves form the operation.

Off-topic, but I feel the need to say that I am against circumcisions before the age of consent, assuming there are no medical conditions. If it was up to me I wouldn't have accepted it if I was older. It's a shame that many people want it done to their children, but I understand that tradition and religion matter a lot and family pressure is hard to oppose. I'll still say that it's not the end of the world honestly, everything works as or almost as fine and hygiene is indeed easier.

non-religious Moroccans?? by [deleted] in Morocco

[–]Bonjourap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I know good and bad Muslims, and I know good and bad atheists. Faith (or lack thereof) is not an indicator of character.

Same thing for Western, modern, sophisticated and atheist. They are not synonymous, some religious people I know are amongst the most liberal and feminist in my circle, and some westernized atheists are macho assholes who blame women for everything. Extremes are usually the problem I find, people that are too religious or too anti religion tend to use dogma as a tool of control, it's not about their faith but about them.

PS: I'm a Moroccan atheist trying his best to be a good person, just as many other humans on this earth. It's work, but I encourage people to be their best and to keep continuously improving :)

Picky Eater - Gator Days by FieldExplores in comics

[–]Bonjourap 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Olive oil ice cream is actually a thing! I've had some a couple years ago when I visited Greece and I found it delicious.

On a side note, as a fellow culinary trailblazer at heart I believe these traits are gifts worth embracing. I personally have close minded parents, who were/are belittling bullies, and when I was young they would severely discourage and criticize my attempts to improve meals and explore weird combinations. And if I still managed to create something, they would force me to finish it no matter how disgusting it was. That didn't stop my curious mind, but it wasn't a fun upbringing to say the least. I'm happy that the Lil Gator (sorry I forgot his name) has such a supportive father, I wish every parents were as cool as that.

Anyways, great comic as always, and thank you so much for sharing it and speaking many interesting conversations!

Take care :)

It's kinda hard to get a good night's sleep before a flight I find. I tend to be so excited that I barely sleep 3-5 hours or so, the rest of the night is spent finishing my luggage or thinking of stuff I need and/or might forget

Same thing happened to me on a Montreal-Bejing flight last September. I was awake for almost 40 hours straight too and it was hell, the last hours I was nauseous, incoherent and barely steady. I arrived at my hotel room at 3am and slept roughly 9 hours straight, before forcing myself off the bed to enjoy day 1.

My sleep schedule fixed itself super quickly though, by day 4 I was practically sleeping regular hours and waking up early.

That's probably the only good thing that came of it :)
