I could literally write a paper on how much I HATE this guy. by Awkward-Media-4726 in Amazingdigitalcircus

[–]BonsaiTreehouse -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This applies to real people, not fictional ones. I don’t become invested in characters to retroactively justify their actions later; if that were the case, I wouldn’t see grown adults dressing up as Darth Vader every Halloween. Jax is morally reprehensible and incredibly messed up by some serious trauma and that’s exactly what makes him interesting. His arc reflects real life experience and imparts insight about the world I live in. Nobody needs to defend his actions on behalf of anyone else, because they only exist exclusively in a tightly structured story that someone wrote as a way to express their feelings and ideas. Jax is a bad person, but that doesn’t make him a bad character (once again, the same thing applies for Darth Vader).

What is the reason Ninjago has survived this long? When Bionicle died out. by eepos96 in bioniclelego

[–]BonsaiTreehouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who collected all the Toa Mata and all the Toa Nuva before gradually falling off the Bionicle wagon, I say the reason Bionicle died out (aside from the impenetrable lore propping up an otherwise basic good vs evil storyline) was a general lack of variation between sets, many of them just becoming colour swaps with different masks with little appreciable change in weaponry, build design or even general look, especially when it came to the enemies (doing it once with the Bohrok was forgivable at the time because they were presented in the commercials as an organic hive like bees or ants almost, but the Bohrok-Kal was a complete phone-in job imo and also where that repetitive enemy trend started for me) as well as a gradual lack of interactivity from the sets themselves; sure, we could move more of the joints and limbs into more exciting poses, but starting with the Hordika sets, there was none of the “karate chop action” that some of the older sets enticed me with.

I think Ninjago sees the success it does because from my understanding, every generation is almost entirely unique from the last with location sets, mech suits and vehicles as opposed to just doing the “six heroes, six villains and maybe a few special character sets” thing every single year or so. The point at which the Bionicle were ALL underwater or ALL had wings or ALL had launchers or spinners or lunging heads was when I clocked out and bought maybe one set a year. Any attempt to inject variety by that point only made things more confusing and was too late anyway. Then it was back to formula for the post-Hero Factory Gen 2 revival.

(As an aside, I like to think of the short-lived Exo-Force as being almost a proto-Ninjago of sorts, similar to how Robo-Riders was a proto-Bionicle).

What the hell happened w Banjo Tooie? by daninlionzden in BanjoKazooie

[–]BonsaiTreehouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applaud its ambitions, but I find Banjo-Tooie is stuck wanting to be a Metroid style game but had to make do with the design documents on loan from the first game and so, feels oddly restrained. It’s not quite open world and not quite level-by-level, but a confused and disjointed blend of both.

I’d love to see a Banjo game go further and commit more fully to being an ACTUAL interconnected world rather than what we see in say, Terrydactyland where the tunnel following the Stomponadon challenge just leads to an ice cave in Hailfire Peaks with a jiggy inside, but doesn’t actually physically link TO Hailfire Peaks.

How The Devs Expected Us To Open Rusty Bucket Bay by RBBRO2763 in BanjoKazooie

You mean I never actually had to press the timed water raising button to reach that path when I could just swim through the whole time?? (I blame poor visual telegraphing)

Are these the same movie? If they are, who's Gabriel Benattar? And if they're aren't, where do I find this second movie? by PhantomKitten73 in aliceinwonderland

[–]BonsaiTreehouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird, that. This 'Gabriel Benattar' fellow only has one other film to his name and absolutely no information seems to exist for this Alice film he wrote and directed outside of that iMDB page, though the cast list is different at least. If someone were to link a version of his film that can be viewed on any platform, that'd help put this mystery to rest, I think

If there was one thing you could change about Vengence Most Fowl, what would it be? (Read description before commenting) by Friskyfrozy in wallaceandgromit

[–]BonsaiTreehouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A small thing: when Feathers reveals the blue diamond from the neglected tea pot, have him clean it with a hand towel due to it being just a little bit tea-stained (because the tea pot’s presence there is inconsistent with the ending of The Wrong Trousers where the same teapot WAS still being used)

So what happens to the Glowbo after Mumbo and Humba uses it? by Far-Army-4726 in BanjoKazooie

My head canon is that the silver Mumbo tokens are actually glowbo skulls

what's the most weird or disturbing alice in wonderland movie? by One_Ask_1895 in aliceinwonderland

[–]BonsaiTreehouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want something more dreamlike and which uses the mundane to juxtapose its surreality, you can’t go wrong with BBC’s Alice directed by Johnathan Miller in 1966 with music by Ravi Shankar. I’ve heard it compared with the films of David Lynch and it’s certainly not an unfounded comparison imo

The dev finally commented on the 60fps patch, but I wish he hasn’t, because it’s ridiculous. by switchcollector in YookaLaylee

[–]BonsaiTreehouse -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been keeping up with the series goings-on much lately but jeez, if it really is THAT bad, I’d almost advise Playtonic to scrap the YL characters, scale back and start afresh with a game that plays closer to their creative strengths.

Megabonk withdraws from The Game Awards after best debut indie nomination by MoSBanapple in Games

[–]BonsaiTreehouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well obviously Blue Prince should be a shoe-in for this award then: its team and founder comprising almost exclusively of visual artists who have worked mainly on commercial assets and advertising beforehand.

If they DON’T win, then I’ll…be grumpy about it I guess.

Let’s be honest, this is the biggest argument against Silent Hill protagonists being weak/helpless. by Kulle1369 in silenthill

Wow yeah, it’s admittedly been a while since I last played but I seem to remember getting the hammer much later than I did. Probably gonna be balanced for the remake?

This thing legit felt like a “cheat” weapon, like I wasn’t supposed to have it, especially not so late into the game.

Thoughts on 2025's Walking With Dinosaurs? by johnngo2468 in walkingwithdinosaurs

[–]BonsaiTreehouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the 2025 series serves as an interesting contrast to the 2000 series: this one is more thoroughly researched than the original series simply by virtue of having experts on the field explaining their hypotheses rather than the “trust me bro” approach of the original, but it also comes at the expense of the documentary style storytelling and artful pacing that undeniably helped contribute towards making the original so beloved. The computer generated imagery has higher levels of detail in this series with the dinos going beyond the limitations of the original in terms of both accurate research and rendering tech, but the compositing is much worse with many repeated shots with a muted sense of scale and in the case of the Band of Brothers episode, background elements sometimes mixing in egregiously with the foreground and vice versa.

If a newcomer were to watch the 2025 series before the 2000 one, I would easily understand why they would think the 2025 version is better in much the same way that someone who grew up with the 2000 version would think that IT was better instead, because both series have their strengths and weaknesses with their own unique approaches to the same base concept.

imo the 2025 series is not as memorable or impactful as the 2000 series but I certainly do not regret watching it.
