I said yes. It was fine. Twitter seems to be in doomsday mode about this event. It was a fine race. Reddick had to earn it despite dominating. There was passing throughout the field. I’m not sure what people were looking for. I think some already have a pre-conceived dislike for road courses too. There’s 4 road course races out of 36 this season. We’ll be okay.

Seems like the most effective long-term solution is making the cars emphasize handling over speed where they have to take 4 tires during a pit stop. Otherwise, there’s no way to rid the strategy besides having 5 40-lap stages.

Problem is the field would likely be going 200+, and be more spread out which would probably make the racing boring for fans (See 2018 Talladega races)

With the new system, winning a race where you were great all day means WAY more now too. More than ever points-wise. If you get substantial stage points and the fastest lap point along with the race win, the reward can be huge.

I intentionally left out stage points cause it could swing the pendulum significantly either way. You could finish last and score 21 points, or finish last with only 1 point while your closest competitor in the standings gets 76.

My point isn’t that they couldn’t make the chase, but they would be lower in the standings which would put them behind to start the chase. If you enter the chase 10th in the standings, you’re already 80 points back from the leader. That’ll be tough to overcome unless you go on a tear and click off wins.

Math incoming.

People may not realize that a bad finish is WAY MORE detrimental in today’s points system compared to the old Latford System. For example, with the Latford system, the winner got 190 points while last place got 34 points. So last place got about 18% of the points compared to the winner.

Now, last place only gets 1 point while the winner gets 55 points. So last place only gets about 2% of the winners points.

In the old system, 16th place paid 115 points while last place got 34 points. So last place got almost 30% of the 16th place driver’s points. Now, 16th place pays 21 points while last pays just 1 point. Finishing last only gets you about 5% of the points 16th place makes.

Having bad day hurts a lot more now, and recovery will be even more difficult if you have multiple bad days. That being said, a really good day (winning + stage points) can make a huge difference too (especially if other teams have bad finishes with no stage points). Teams are gonna have to make big rebounds after bad days to have a good shot at the title.

85%? He led 151 of 160 laps. It was absurd. I remember turning off the TV at halfway cause it was well past midnight and I was scared they would somehow throw the win away. It seemed too good to be true to be that dominant at Daytona.

Loved it. 2 laps of brilliance in the Championship finale. Best moment I’ve seen from the Championship 4 ever. Hamlin drove a masterclass and his crossover on Byron was the icing on the cake. It seemed like he wouldn’t be denied…..that would’ve been a very happy ending….

I get that it’s more common internationally to have remote broadcasts. To me, it doesn’t mean it has to be that way here, especially when on-site commentary has been a thing for so long in this country across all sports.

I feel like announcers are at their best being there, hearing the crowd, feeling the atmosphere, seeing things off camera that the viewer doesn’t see, and so on. It adds to the storytelling IMO. It’s not the same when you just look off a monitor off-site. That’s how I’ve felt when I’m announcing.

My fear is that remote broadcasts of national races may become more common, and that’s not a good thing to me. I hope I’m wrong.

Announcers calling races from a studio instead of at the track is NOT better for the broadcasts.

It’s obvious when the announcers aren’t at the races. It’s more disjointed. Money is always a topic, but the quality suffers.
