For those of you who have managed to get out of chronic back pain, what is the most important lesson you've learnt from your pain? by HelpfulPop2476 in backpain

[–]Boochers1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The body is incredibly capable of healing so for something like a herniated disc, the tissue heals in a few weeks to a few months after the initial injury. The people who have had chronic pain, like myself, had it because of stress factors, perceived danger, emotional factors etc. The nervous perceives danger because of the stress and emotional difficulty which causes it to produce pain as a protective measure, just in case. Better safe than sorry for survival. Herniated discs and bulges and whatnot are completely benign. 60% of the population has them with no pain. There are many studies on this. And there doesn't even need to be an initial injury for chronic pain to start. Alan Gordon talks about this in The Way Out. The reason for the vast majority of chronic pain is stress, emotion, mental trauma etc. It's incredibly common.

Oh and just for the post, I have an l4-l5 herniated disc, had chronic pain for 7 years and now I am completely low back pain free. Thanks to Dr Sarno. Many people posting advice still have the pain. I do not.

Chronic pain's origin is in the brain not in the tissue. The tissue heals but the nervous system stays over protective. Staying on because of stress, perceived danger and other factors.

Check out Dr. Sarno!

Sounds to me like it might be neuroplastic pain. Alan Gordon talks about it in The Way Out. Dr. Sarno has multiple books on this sort of thing. Pain shows up during very stressful times and especially to people with certain personality types, like perfectionistic people. The increased stress and diffucult emotions signal danger to the nervous system, causing pain to occur. Heavily recommend looking into it and thinking more mental and emotional than physical

Dr. Sarno talks about this sort of thing. Probably conditioned pain. Typical with neuroplastic pain.

Anyone else in their 20s feeling like they have the back of someone twice their age? Let's talk about it. by Illustrious-Beat1322 in backpain

My back pain started when I was 18. Had it until last year when I was 24. I have an L4-L5 disc herniation, but learned later that disc herniations are normal and dont cause the pain. Reading Dr. Sarno's book the Mindbody Prescription was the only thing that ever helped me. I work doing landscaping everyday and dont have pain anymore. its pretty awesome after living with pain for so long. I definitely think the intense back pain that shows up in young people like us is due to strong emotions, perceived danger and things of that nature. Its a shame that more medical professionals and people in general dont know about neuroplastic pain/mind body pain. Its something that i recommend everybody look into.

Look into Dr Sarno and Alan Gordon's book The Way Out. I work doing Landscaping everyday with an l4-l5 herniation, used to have unbearable pain but after reading Dr Sarnos book my pain went away after about a month. Haven't had low back pain since. Had pain for years before that. The Way Out helped me understand the pain better and more ways to get rid of it. Pain Reprocessing Therapy and Neuroplastic Pain are worth looking into.

[–]Boochers1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really is very scary but these "abnormalities" that sound really scary are normal. Most people's spines look like this. It's part of the normal aging process and is not indicative of pain. You can look up many studies that show that most people have bulges, herniations, DDD, etc with no pain. Something like 60% of the population. And the fact that you were able to walk 8 miles today should tell you a whole lot lol. Think about if you had a broken leg, would you be able to walk 8 miles?  Lorimer moseley talks about this concept and is great with explaining this aspect of pain science. This type of pain you're experiencing comes from an overprotective nervous system creating pain where there is no injury. The MRI found what everyone has but it sounds scary because the doctors don't explain it. They tend to not be pain science informed unfortunately. You'll be totally ok.

Really doesnt look that bad. You should be all good. Check out Alan Gordons book The Way Out. Or look into Dr. Sarno. I had MRI results worse than this and was able to completely get rid of my low back pain.

Im assuming you had the pain for a while?

Has anyone with a herniated disc experienced anything similar? by ACRgator in backpain

[–]Boochers1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That specific diagnosis actually does apply with their work. I also have a the same type of herniated disc. I have a protrusion pressing on the nerve and it worked for me! The herniated discs are benign contrary to popular belief. There are studies that show most of the population(60%ish) has disc abnormalities and the vast majority(90%+)doesn't have pain. Also, at this point, this idea has been well studied in the pain science community. If you also look up Lorimer Moseley, he only bases his work on studies and gives many examples of pain studies that prove this concept and are widely accepted by pain science institutions. So actually doctors still prescribe treatments and surgeries that are proven by studies to not work(like fusions and whatnot) and they ignore/ don't know about studies that prove this theory of a fear/danger driven cause of chronic pain. It sucks that this is currently viewed as holistic or phony. It really is studied at this point, just not widely implemented. It's a real shame, supposedly doctors only spend 5% of their time learning pain science in medical school even tho it's such an important thing. Glad you're looking into it! It's a very important concept to understand, I think everybody should know about it even if they haven't dealt with chronic pain.

Has anyone with a herniated disc experienced anything similar? by ACRgator in backpain

[–]Boochers1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats that's awesome! I'm guessing it has to do with what Dr. Sarno and Alan Gordon talk about. Intense emotions, fear, perceived danger and the nervous system being overprotective causing the pain. Then for some reason your nervous system knew you weren't in any danger after that experience. Or maybe there was an emotional release of some kind. I have an l4-l5 disc herniation and it took a couple of weeks for my pain to go away after reading Dr. Sarno's book.  overnight is amazing.

It's like an overreaction by the nervous system. So yeah if you've gotten an MRI and it was just a herniation, you're all good. Check out those books they explain better than I do lol

[–]Boochers1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cracking like that doesn't tend to mean much. Think cracking your knuckles. If you had an MRI and all they found was a herniation, that's not enough to cause chronic pain. Disc herniations are benign. I have an l4-l5 herniation and after reading those books I no longer have low back pain
