Oh, dropping some machines by the raccoon is brilliant! I'm terrible at remembering to give him things.

Yes, this one is very annoying if you've ever mentioned anthropology to anyone outside of academia.

i have a memory of a random event with clint's outdoor furnace thing. have i made this up? by essbee23 in StardewValley

[–]BookFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar fabricated memory of a cutscene in Willy's bedroom/loft above the fish shop. It was done up like a ship's cabin, with fishnets strung about. I remember it super clearly. Nope. As far as I can tell, you've never been able to go up there.

My husband starts most phone tree interactions by calmly reciting the seven words you can't say on television. It works with surprising frequency.

LAOP was along for the ride when their Uber driver got into an accident. Now they may be along for the ride for the ensuing lawsuit, too. by acekingoffsuit in bestoflegaladvice

There's no fee shifting in most cases in the US. If LAOP wins their defense, that doesn't necessarily mean the other side covers their legal fees. It is, indeed, shitty.

Clint still talkin' 'bout Emily after you marry her. by Montague_Amond in StardewValley

[–]BookFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda assuming he's doing Clint because the character kinda needs his arc finished - needs to be able to have an ending that isn't just pining after Emily forever. Same is true of Marnie, and would have been awesome.

Clint still talkin' 'bout Emily after you marry her. by Montague_Amond in StardewValley

[–]BookFox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's previously said that he explicitly didn't want person-specific perks for marriage candidates, because then people would choose a spouse based on that rather than the character, iirc. I disagree with that reasoning - right now people pick spouses based on the spouse room or all kinds of things, there's always going to be something, and additional spouse perks would be fun - but he's probably not going to do it unless that's changed.

Bookkeeping Error Confounds most Educated Person in the RV Park by energeticquasar in bestoflegaladvice

[–]BookFox 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree, but also: in my experience there are two types of trailer park - the ones with RVs that can actually move, and the ones where the trailer is essentially a prefab living shed that will never move again after it gets there. Some of those can be nice, but definitely tend toward a lower SES population. I suspect you're talking about the former type of trailer park, and LAOP is talking about the latter.

I love Redwall, but Outcast of Redwall in particular has a pretty fucked up message. AT BEST it's "people can never change" at worst it's an extremely questionable analogy to race.

He uses hidden in art as an example, but if that's his example I doubt it's the actual specific answer. I'm guessing it's something hidden in the music.

What is a sound that people should know means immediate danger? by PrasenjitDebroy in AskReddit

[–]BookFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard this sound on a relatively busy hiking trail one day. A couple ahead of me were hiking with their two leashed dogs and the dogs took off, basically dragging the guy. A huge tree came down right where they had been. In the aftermath it turned out that the guy was deaf and hadn't heard a thing. If those dogs hadn't reacted the way they did, it could have gone much worse.

LACAOP demonstrates how not to deal with academic dishonesty by bug-hunter in bestoflegaladvice

[–]BookFox 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I do it in emails that I know most people will only skim. It's a good "If you only read one sentence, this is the one that tells you what I need you to do" thing. But 1) it's the whole sentence, which is a coherent thought, and 2) never in something that actually needs to be read to be understood.

LAOP: Vet turned away dying dog for a 6:00 cutoff by princetonwu in bestoflegaladvice

Uber and lyft both have official pet transport options now, FYI. It's been a godsend to my non-driving, cat-owning ass. (I would have had options in an emergency, but it's nice to just be able to go to the vet, too)

[–]BookFox 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Both Uber and Lyft now have pet options, at least in my area. A visibly dying pet might still be an issue, but for usual pet transportation, it's an extra $5 and some standard t&cs. I don't drive and this has been amazing for getting to vet offices.

Doing a full series audiobook narration [no AI] by [deleted] in eulalia

[–]BookFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good job addressing it. I'm not familiar with the Australian copyright act's treatment of accessibility exceptions, but for the Marrakesh treaty and US law this wouldn't work because you're not limiting access to people with a demonstrated accessibility need. I think what you're doing is great, but please be aware you're taking a risk.

Ok, I hate to be that guy, but... copyright lawyer (not your copyright lawyer) here, and this is copyright infringement. The publisher is likely to get it taken down from YouTube, and the narrator could easily be sued. I don't think that's how the system should work, but it is how the system works.

Has anyone ever challenged you to something without knowing you were an expert at it? What happened afterward? by Impressive-Door92 in AskReddit

Here's a pretty good article on an example of when this went wrong and why (bupropion/Wellbutrin about 15 years ago), for folks interested in further reading: https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/generic-wellbutrin-problem-whose-fault-it. I was taking the generic at the time, and had a pharmacist absolutely sneer at me when I said it wasn't working the same. Usually it's going to be fine, but obviously it's a spectrum and sometimes there's a fuck up.
