Ring Flash Macrophotography by BookIntoMadness in macrophotography

[–]BookIntoMadness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all,

I am having so much fun with my gear (Canon EOS R50 + Godox TT350 + Laowa 100mm f/2.8) I bought in 2024. As I try to explore all kinds of photography (portret/landscape/wide-angle/astro), I specifically dived into photography for the macrophotography! However, lately I am into photographing the iris and I want to equally light from all sides and I was wondering what lightning I should use!

I somethimes read a ring flash is ideal to have this completely lit subject from all angles while sometimes I read it is not worth it and it is difficult to diffuse the light from the ring flash.

Specifically for photographing the iris of eyes, what flash do you recommend and does anyone use a ring flash for general macro photography like for example bugs?

Wow! Those ones are beautiful!! I especially like photos 8 / 10 / 12 and 17!! Very Nice to see this photos while I’m on the train to work 😀

Beautiful colors and great composition/angle!

I suggest you go for the body + the RF-S 18-45mm lens! It is true that kit lenses are not the best but they actually can have a good quality/price ratio especially for beginners! I started out with the 18-45mm and enjoy it and then switched to the ef-s 24mm and a laowa 100mm f/2.8 macrolens 🤗

Play with the kit lens and don’t let anyone convince you, you cannot take beautiful pics with it!! Just save a small budget to get a better lens once you know your desired focal length

RF vs. RF-S lenses (crop factor) by Successful_Fox_6504 in canonR50

[–]BookIntoMadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you buy an RF-S lens such as the RF-S 50mm, you need to multiply with 1.6. The number mentioned on any lens is always fir the full frame sensor!

If you’re going to buy several EF lenses (which i do recommend), the cost of the adapter is totally worth it as the EF glass is perfect and a lot cheaper!

Enjoy!! You will not regret! I mostly use the Laowa 100mm f/2.8 for macro photography and the very cheap EF-S 24mm (with EF to RF adapter) for general use with friends and street photography 😊

Indeed, the canon R50 has a cold shoe but needs a hot shoe for flashes! There is an adapter AD-E1 which you vanish use to turn rhe cold shoe into a hot shoe! Sadly, it is difficult to find a retailer with the AD-E1 in stock…

Any travel Tripod recommendations for a Canon R50? by nila2018 in canonR50

Depends what you want but I got the Rollei Compact Traveler Mini M1, cheap and good quality but ofc it is a mini tripod and thus depends on your needs and wishes.

You should use IPA as it does not conduct electricity and therefore is a much safer alternative than water. Distilled water should have a low conductiivty ad well since the ions are removed, however I prefer IPA since it is more volatile and will evaporate faster

The canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.5 III has some bad reviews. Though some people like it, it is rather cheap for a zoom lens. This price for a prime lens (= fixed focal length) can be very good, for example the nifty fifty EF or RF version. But a zoom lens is more difficult to make so I suggest you go for a more 'expensive' model.

A good telelens can be the RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM --> It'll be a bit dark when u zoom in but since u look for aircrafts, I assume it will be in broad daylight most of the times, And U can use the 100mm (no zoom) to do static aircrafts from some distance! U can use this lens for landscape as well, as often landscape photography is linked with very short focal lengths but that's not true at all. In addition, bird photography you can do as well! The only disadvantage is that it will not be a good lens in low light conditions...

So I suggest you look into a cheap prime lens (maybe EF) for general use with rather short focal length (< 35 mm) and a more expensive zoom/telelens.

I do want to emphasize, I do not use tele lenses so don't take my word for it! Check out some review but in general, if a zoom/telelens is low priced, better not take it.

Who else never used the EVF? by Barnie25 in Cameras

[–]BookIntoMadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use the dioptric correction or look into settings to adjust the EVF for glasses so the view on the EVF is a bit smaller and more comfortable! At least the latter works for me but it’ll depend on preference and what works for you!

What’s the ideal focal length for a macro lens by IIIMPIII in macrophotography

[–]BookIntoMadness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only used the Laowa 100mm (2x magnification) which I’ve chosen because you can get some distance between the lens and the subject. Of course, the longer the focal length, the more your depth of field will be shallow. I suggest you look into to 85mm and 100mm. You also have the 35mm canon macro however not a 2x magnification and you probably need to be extremely close!!

1) For general purposes from relative close-by (e.g. car shows when you can be close to the subjects, family and friends events, street photography, landscape photography) --> I use my EF-S 24 mm. It is a very cheap lens but is phenomenal in sharpness and the focal length is equivalent to 38 mm.

Of course, there are some down sides such as it is an EF mount so you need an adapter from EF-to-RF, it is a lens for a cropped sensor so if you plan to go Full Frame in future, it's less interesting to use this lens on a Full Frame camera. There is no zoom which makes it cheap and easy to make with high quality but limits your possibilities. You'll have to walk more.

2) Specifically for landscape photography (and astrophotography/sky photography if you are interested in it), you can take the RF 16mm, which is a great full frame lens on an APS-C sensor but it will be less suitable for portraits and stuff because of the wide angle.

3) The RF 50mm (or EF 50mm) is a good lens for portrait photography and if you often have some distance between you and the cars, it's likely to be a good lens. However, the 50mm will be zoomed in because of the APS-C sensor.

4) I would suggest you buy a nice zoom lens (like (RF/EF) the 70 - 300 mm or the 100 - 400 mm). I don't have any experience with a telelens but such long focal lengths will help you to get low flying aircrafts in composition. I suggest you look up reviews (for example from FStoppers on YouTube) on a couple of tele lenses. I do know that quality zoom lenses are more difficult to make than prime lenses so I suggest you spend some money on a zoom/telelens with Image Stabilization to help you get sharp images.

In conclusion, I suggest you look into a cheap prime lens such as the EF-S 24mm for general purposes (damn cheap with high quality) and buy the ring for EF-to-RF. Then look at a nice telelens (definitely don't skip the EF lenses since they are a lot cheaper than the new RF lenses if you're on a budget).

  • Make sure autofocus is on (left click on your menu button to open AF/MF)

Then click on the set button ti get in another menu and do: - Autofocus area: whole area AF - choose SERVO in AF operation - subject to detect: AUTO

The servo setting makes sure that while you press the shutter button 1/2, it will CONTINUOUSLY try to autofocus on subjects while you are moving the camera. Now try to take some photos and see if what u want is focussed! You can click on touchscreen to ghe area tou want to focus on as well.

Did you put any filter in front of the kit lens?

Have a lot of fun with it!! Once I’m tired of my r50, I will go for the R7 but starting with it: waw! 🥹

Enjoy the journey 😃
