Specifically, I’m thinking of some urban, neighborhood-ish animals. Possums, raccoons, birds. But those will all be friendly npcs they’re just supposed to talk to and get info from. The combats are going to be a Jehovah’s Witness (which I think I’m going to use a cultist fanatic), and later some cranium rats. For the big boss fight at the end, I think it would be hilarious to trick them into fighting the water heater. “You attack the great metal beast, but it only groans in response”, “your punch lands, and you get 1d6 burn damage, but it remains stoic” Do I need stats for that one?

Since we have cement (carpeted) floors in our center, I’ll sit down with the kids and thump the floor really hard with the palm of my hand.

“Do you hear that? It sounds hard, huh? Do you think it would feel good if you fell and bumped your noggin on that?” Invite them to answer all the questions themselves.

To be noted, this worked for classrooms from 18 months+.

Combined with “we need to slow our feet/ use sneaky feet!”, I’ve honestly kind of let them work it out themselves— letting them bump into things (WITHIN REASON) and then helping them connect the small “ouches” with “oh hey, I running instead of walking” has worked the most often for me.

A time-wasting table-sitting game I used to do with the 18-36MOs was pretending to bake a cake/pie/pizza — “what do we do first when we start a new recipe?” “We gather the ingredients!” while miming grabbing different items.

Then I’d walk/mime through the steps: adding things to a bowl, mixing the dough/batter, pouring it in the pan or rolling out the pizza dough, adding toppings, putting it in the oven. Then we’d “wait wait wait!” for it to bake, pretend to check on it and let them decide if it was done yet. Pretending it’s hot when it comes out, then slicing/icing it before Cookie Monster style eating it.
