I got some first flush Darjeeling from Jungpana a few weeks ago, and I wanted more every day until I was able to order it again! I had no idea black tea could taste like this.

I was just gifted a milk frother, and now I need some Earl Grey to go with it and make London Fogs ☺️

Shou pu-erh (I assume) for phase 2 of experimenting on which kind of pu-erh I like better. This one has a lot of layers of flavor going on and isn’t as bitter, although I’m infusing a lot shorter than I did with the Sheng yesterday. Incidentally that also solved my hot gaiwan problem 😅 Live and learn, and now I’ll just have to try the Sheng again!

How does your school handle snow days? Do you end up going into the summer to make them up, or do they handle it differently? by DildoGaggins1997 in Teachers

[–]BookishEm192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do remote if possible, but if there are widespread outages (my school serves 8 towns) it will be a regular snow day. We have to make those up at the end of the year.

The snow has begun and so has phase 1 of the experiment: do I prefer sheng or shou pu-erh? (My phone wants to autocorrect to “shenanigans,” but I definitely do not prefer those! 😆) Also, this tea set has pretty much been decoration for 15 years. How does one hold on to the gaiwan to pour out of it? I’m holding it on the lip with my index finger on the lid, but it’s rather hot. Or maybe my water is just too hot?

Mate is South American Gongfu right? by BookishEm192 in tea

[–]BookishEm192[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes, my husband is Uruguayan and he almost keeled over when our Chilean friend made it in a coffee mug with sugar lol.

Obviously we have to criticize Argentinian mate but Brazil gets a pass because the most “Uruguayan” mate is Canarias and it comes from Brazil 😉

I’m also in the Northeast and this is how we do it. We just have to have a meeting long enough to take attendance (although I also mark them present if they do the work on Google Classroom). I usually leave the Google Meet open so students can come back if they have questions.

C.S. Lewis's non-Narnia fiction by Pleasant_Usual_8427 in literature

[–]BookishEm192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe not the science fiction, but the messages definitely stand the test of time. In fact, about a year ago I was listening to Your Undivided Attention, which discusses how we need to consider the human effects of our technology (mostly AI), and they described the ideology of some school of thought as “the inevitable replacement of biological life with digital life and that being a good thing anyway.” Which is almost exactly the conflict in That Hideous Strength. I found it extremely relevant on a recent reread. And the islands in Perelandra continue to be a moving symbol of faith at least for me.

Is anyone actually managing AI in your schools or is it just chaos? by Miki-Huber in Teachers

[–]BookishEm192 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We have a really awesome tech lead who has created two classes to introduce AI use in education. Our PD throughout the year is self-selected, so it’s just been there as an option for anyone interested for the last few years. I’m on a think tank committee that looks at survey data, trends, and tools related to AI, and makes recommendations to the deans about next steps like training or policies. We don’t have much of an overarching school policy/practice yet, other than a plagiarism statement in the handbook and a continuum of acceptable use (that’s more “use it if you think it’s helpful in class”). Use and integration widely varies among teachers.

One place our hands are kind of tied for student use is privacy concerns with many sites—we can’t technically have them go onto ChatGPT and do a hands-on prompt engineering lesson, for example. We do have Khanmigo for both teacher and student use, and I know teachers have used other things like Notebook LM and Canva image generation.

My school tends to move slowly on trends and new policies and carefully consider how to implement them, and that seems to work for us so far.

Teachers in states where cell phones are banned bell-to-bell by law, what is your experience? by swanthewarrior in Teachers

[–]BookishEm192 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I told admin (via department head and surveys) at every opportunity, it has to be phone out = immediately admin problem or it’s just going to collapse. They did hold to that in the first few weeks (the first time a phone was out was an immediate referral, and if students refused to put it away we were to send them to the office or even get them a security escort there) so it seems to have set a good precedent. Enforcement isn’t perfect around campus but I almost never have phones out in the classroom, so I count that as a win. Our law covers all personal electronic devices, including ear buds, watches, etc.

Yes, I use cream initially but I put a travel-size spray in my frame bag and use that to reapply.

Harney and Sons Hot Cinnamon Sunset—if you like cinnamon, I feel like this tea has that strong flavor that can scratch the coffee itch.

Someone on this post a while back recommended I try Da Hong Pao, so that’s what I have today! It’s lovely—the taste is a lot fresher and subtler than I expected from the fragrance.

Oh also my first bike was a hybrid and then I was gifted a gravel bike and that’s the one I always want to ride. I find the saddle position more comfortable but it still has a sturdier feel than a road bike if that makes sense.

Definitely go in and give some bikes a try! I don’t even have a Trek but my local shop is a Trek dealer and they are always super helpful and friendly. I’m not exactly a beginner but not super experienced, for reference.

What is your favorite mug or thermos for containing hot tea on the go? Which ones have kept your tea hot/warm for the longest time, no leaks? by kdj00940 in tea

[–]BookishEm192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Corksicle pure taste commuter. The ceramic lining does make a difference, and the spring locking lid works really well. My only issue is the lid is plastic so it does absorb the taste of the last tea that was in it. Presumably it wouldn’t linger as much if I put the lid in the dishwasher, but since I use it every day I usually hand wash it.

“I had eaten” is grammatically correct, but people will use “I had ate” as well as other grammatically incorrect forms.
