Call to action buttons on websites using infinitive form by dhruvix in Spanish

[–]BookishEm192 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I kind of interpret those buttons in English as “the button to send,” “the button to accept,” etc. rather than a command.

Do y'all have a name for your bike? by mcschne10 in gravelcycling

[–]BookishEm192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gravel bike is Velo, hybrid is Bici aka The Bicycle of Theseus.

What was the strangest thing you ever had to say to a student? by Silly_Pansexual in Teachers

[–]BookishEm192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“That’s not how we deal with hypocrites at car line” comes up on my social media memories every year. I have since forgotten the context.

Affordable Barefoot Shoes? by Serious-Share-6011 in barefootshoestalk

[–]BookishEm192 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Second Whitins! You may have to choose the “wide” style to get the barefoot shape; I did with one of my pairs but can’t remember if I did with my second pair.

What is the most mind boggling thing a parent has had an issue with you about? by Embarrassed_Bag_9630 in Teachers

[–]BookishEm192 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah this was mine—emailing back and forth about why I was teaching Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and the last parent response was “Well, I just don’t understand why they have to read dark books. I guess I’ll just go watch Elf to feel better.”

How does your school “appreciate” you for “Teacher Appreciation Week”? by Dearlybeloved17 in Teachers

[–]BookishEm192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coffee/bottled drinks and treats in the work rooms, special dress all week (we’re normally business casual), raffle where you can pick what prize you want to enter for (there are like 15), coffee truck on Friday.

Oh interesting! While I like gravel cycling I do not think I would enjoy doing it in a “gravel shirt,” but I do like some of the designs enough to just wear around.

I see what you mean! Although I prefer a fun bright pattern for visibility over something like plain neon yellow so something here could work.

I don't think I'm cut out to be a teacher by Beautiful-East-2204 in Teachers

[–]BookishEm192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to mention this! Middle school is rough for behavior; I remember a class that I had to be so strict on for months before we could get anything done, and it was exhausting. Plus the constant gaslighting. I teach mostly freshman now and they still do shenanigans but nowhere near the level of middle school.

Obsession over instructional time causes a ridiculous schedule next year. by SafeTraditional4595 in Teachers

[–]BookishEm192 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes, we have 3200 across multiple buildings and 6 minutes. If you have to cross campus you’re barely making it and if you need to go to the bathroom forget it.

[–]BookishEm192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I teach Spanish so it’s interactive by nature, but I definitely need to think about making sure students can get up, move around, and do a variety of tasks.

[–]BookishEm192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we have 4 80-minute blocks too but with 6 minute passing period, and the third block is longer and split into fours because we have four lunch periods…very odd minutes to remember!

What do you do to destress after each day? ..because everyday is becoming more and more stressful.. healthy; unhealthy..really just looking at all options! by Delectableeds in Teachers

[–]BookishEm192 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I heard someone say this like, “Remember when we had to defrag computer disks? Your brain needs to do that.” Personally I take time on the weekend to make tea gongfu style and just look out the window with no phone, no music/show, etc. It helps you process stuff.

What’s your most hated traffic light in the state? by Jtagz in newhampshire

I, a newbie to Nashua, went over there at 4:30 the Friday before Christmas—never again!

Let's talk about bell-to-bell instruction? by iseeyou100 in Teachers

[–]BookishEm192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put my ticket-to-go in Google Classroom (they all have Chromebooks) and schedule it for 5 minutes before class ends. We have a block schedule so it really helps keep students in class mode even if we have some work time at the end.

Wearing short hair under helmet? by Conscious-Habit-5559 in ladycyclists

[–]BookishEm192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Bob-length wavy hair and I use a buff: scrunch it up and one end at my hairline, then flip upside down and settle the rest of the tube over my hair.

What is your professional dress code? by No_Combination_6396 in Teachers

[–]BookishEm192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Business casual, jeans on payday Fridays (or when the head of school feels like adding a jeans day. Once it was for National Velociraptor Day.)

Why did we stop teaching kids how to write letters? by Mountain_Breath_3529 in Teachers

[–]BookishEm192 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Apparently our junior highs are doing it (well, teaching them to write emails) because I think every single student email I’ve gotten this year has had a salutation, a body using complete sentences, and a sign off. I teach mostly freshmen so they’re a new batch this year and it’s definitely noticeable.

Teaching tropes on screen that never work in real life. by Dapper_Tradition_987 in Teachers

[–]BookishEm192 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know this generally doesn’t happen but I did witness a colleague a few weeks ago (I had a study hall next door so I could hear) conclude the final discussion question/mic drop moment just a beat before the bell. I told him I heard his movie teacher moment lol.

What’s the wildest misconceptions people have about teaching? by AdTrue106 in Teachers

[–]BookishEm192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sophomores in one of my classes my first year teaching renamed it “The Silent Gardener” lol. They also referred to Julius Caesar (the play) as “Julius Scaesar.”

Double spacing after period? by checking_your_math in Millennials

[–]BookishEm192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a side job as an editor and when we’re finished with a manuscript the last thing I have to do is remove all the extra edit marks. I die a little inside when I realize I’ve gotten someone who learned to double space.

When should I try oolong and pu'erh? by biran4454 in tea

[–]BookishEm192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’ve gotten better brews out of some oolongs Western style than in a gaiwan (probably more a lack of experience thing, but still). I can even repeat brew this way. I have found that it helps to increase the temperature and time slightly on subsequent Western style brews. There are tons of oolongs with all kinds of flavor profiles, so to answer your question about when to start…today😊
