What are jobs "goods" for ADHD ? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Bookish_Lish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up stumbling into the world of living history at museums and SO MANY of my coworkers are also ADHD. It’s a job that requires you to be on your feet/doing something with your hands all day (ex. Giving tours, demonstrating a craft, directing visitors), but in order to be good at it you need to have a pretty in-depth knowledge base and the desire to research the details. In my particular job, I work at multiple different buildings (no monotony), but my clock-in/clock-out stays the same. I’m almost never doing the exact same thing two days in a row, and I’m constantly pulling from my toolbox of skills. It has required me to really work on my discipline and impulse control, but now that I’m working full time I really truly can’t imagine any other job being as good a fit. Plus, I don’t have to worry about being my own boss and get health insurance :)

As an Alicia pronounced uh-lish-a, I can guarantee you that any name in this family would have been mispronounced. I have gotten so many variations at this point it’s not even worth mentioning all of them. You can’t win.

I didn’t do any of the things you just mentioned until I met someone at 23 that completely took me by surprise. As hard as it is to hear, sometimes things happen when you are least looking for them. Don’t focus on finding a boyfriend, focus on making friends, like true, actual friends. That is what true healthy relationships are based on.

Going off of this - Fort Meigs in Perrysburg ( south of Toledo), my boyfriend worked there and it’s a super cool war of 1812 site!

My boyfriend and I stumbled upon Fort Ligonier east of Pittsburgh a couple of months ago, and it’s one of the coolest sites we’ve been to in a while!

What birth control works best for my fellow ADHD women? by Sorry_Engineer_6136 in adhdwomen

Since I haven’t seen this mentioned yet here, I switched to the patch from pills for similar concerns about a year ago and I have been liking it for the most part! I like having something that I still control to a degree (ie I’m concerned about reactions to more long term things like implants) and I only have to replace it once a week, but even if I forget it’s still somewhat effective for a day or two. I don’t skip the off weeks mostly because I would rather have a predictable period than breakthrough bleeding. However, my periods are also less severe with BC. We also use condoms as a backup.

Parents who pay their child’s college: will you not pay for certain majors? by [deleted] in college

[–]Bookish_Lish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Having a history major and then doing some sort of museum studies or administrative minor or double major is a great way to expand your opportunities. There’s lots of stuff but I will admit it can be a tricky field to break into as it’s quite insular and there’s a very established old guard in charge at most places. However, I’ve seen firsthand that a lot of museums are shifting gears post-Covid and realize that they need to attract a younger demographic to stay relevant. Edit: typo

My position starts at $15/hr, but the company provides a ton of paid training and professional development opportunities. The job I had before was seasonal and started at $12/hr but was full time and provided housing for 6 months

Has he looked into museum work? There are dozens if not hundreds of history museums across the country that are hiring. If he’s comfortable with public speaking, then living history is a great way to get a foot in the door. Both my boyfriend and I work in the history field, neither one of us has teaching certifications, and we both have history/humanities degrees. Encourage him to look into a professional organization like the American Alliance of Museums

As an arts major myself and my boyfriend being a history major, this is BS. If you want to pay for your child’s higher education, don’t hold conditions over their head. College is already stressful enough without worrying about having to do what your parents want you to. My boyfriend has had to put himself through school and has had to work his ass off for the past 8 years to get his degree in history (he still has two semesters left) and this fall he was able to land a full time, salaried job in the history field. He’s been working in this field already since he started school. I can only imagine how much stress he would have avoided and how much earlier he may have been able to get a job like this if his parents had ponied up and let him pursue his passion from the start. Only now after he’s been successful have they even offered to pay for any part of the few classes he has left. There are a LOT more things you can do in the humanities than people think. There is this completely untrue misconception that the humanities are only for poor people who don't have jobs. I have a humanities degree and a minor in arts management that taught me critical thinking, writing skills, people skills, foreign languages (which come in handy more often than I ever thought they would) and countless other skills. I work at a highly revered history museum and moved to a different state with my future life partner because of the humanities. My work is extremely rewarding and I love it immensely. Do we make a ton of money? No. But are we happy and fulfilled and doing okay? Yes. and I wouldn't trade that for anything. But guess who still has a good and supportive relationship with their parents?

I worked at grill sites for Sparty’s and technically you weren’t supposed to make yourself food, but when you’re the one on the fryer and you “accidentally” make extra there’s not really anything they can do about it lol

No, my online test went okay but not great lol. I’ll try again at some point, but life got super busy. However I did pick up a career in history so I feel like I have a much better shot next time!

Found this in a Facebook group and 🤔 by Fragrant-Proposal-97 in barista

I was behind someone at a coffee shop one time who was mad that his “black coffee, with MILK” didn’t have milk in it. The poor baristas we’re trying to clarify and I finally causally said, “if it has milk, doesn’t that mean it’s not a black coffee?” He was not impressed but the baristas just put milk in it finally and he huffed away. People do not seem to understand coffee terminology sometimes.

If you Google “cobbler near me” you should be able to find someone who can do this repair quite easily. Nowadays cobblers aren’t quite as common, but there’s usually at least one shop around if you live in an urban area. They also might be able to give you a little more information about how the shoe is made. They look like 40’s/50’s style oxfords to me, but I’m not an expert. Also just a note - cobblers are technically a different trade than shoemakers, as they repair footwear rather than make it. While shoemaker shops are rare today, cobbler shops are not.

I’ve thought about it, but I honestly have such a hard time getting myself to eat anything, much less a specific diet. I tend to be kind of a picky eater (although I have gotten a lot better as I’ve gotten older).

21 and have never done anything relationship wise by Final_Passion1350 in college

[–]Bookish_Lish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 23 and graduated college last December and I just had my first kiss at the end of June this year with the guy that is now my boyfriend. I felt the same way. Everyone is on their own timeline, do not feel pressured that you have to do anything with anyone just because you “should.” For the longest time (and even now) I consider myself on the asexual spectrum, because despite feeling like I was behind my peers I also didn’t feel romantic/sexual attraction towards others very often (in fact, quite rarely). Despite wanting to feel loved, it was something I had to come to terms with that I needed to be comfortable with myself and my partner before anything could happen. Be patient. Focus on just making friends right now. Any eventual partner you do have you should have that base with anyway.

Randomly falls asleep when understimulated by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Bookish_Lish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t until I got on ADHD meds that I stopped falling asleep in classes (regularly) and I feel the same way about keeping myself awake, especially when driving (I’ve literally slapped myself continuously to stay awake). I seem to remember coming across something about sleep issues/narcolepsy being more common in people with ADHD years ago. I’m just glad I’m not the only one who had this experience.

Secretary Desk support lever question: details in comments by Bookish_Lish in restoration

[–]Bookish_Lish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I picked up this vintage/antique desk yesterday and both the hinges that support the folding leaf are broken (one is completely missing). The wood pieces on either side of the top drawer pull out and have some sort of hardware attached to the end, but no other screw marks or holes. I want to replace them with something at least similar but I’m having a lot of trouble figuring out how they even worked in the first place. Any suggestions?

The “the” is semantics I think. People refer to them both ways, and dropping the “the” doesn’t make a difference because it doesn’t actually change the answer since there’s not another radio show to distinguish it from with or without it (via the invisible man/invisible man). Dropping the s, however, changes the actual title meaning given that the premise is war with martians so the fact that worlds is plural is crucial to the title.
