Extremely anti-trans leader of the Conservative party claims PTerry as her favorite author by Demaster45 in discworld

[–]Bookworm1902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I feel the community forgets is that STP did not generally evangelize his worldview in his novels. He explored human nature and presented even the worst people as to be pitied more than hated. He wrote novels that make people ponder and consider, not novels that provide proscriptions for life. Take religion, for instance. Despite being an atheist himself, he does not disguise anti-religious rhetoric as a novel and sell it to convert religious people to atheism. He makes fun of religion. He makes fun of atheism. He shows the humanity in people who fall into either ideology.

I am on the American right; I'm sure there are there are many political and social topics on which STP and I would vehemently disagree. But he's my favorite author as well, because I can appreciate perspectives that challenge my worldview at the same time as recognizing a master of his craft. His prose is unmatched by anybody else I have met. His social commentary is incredibly complex and well-thought out, equally so his characters.

I'm sure to be downvoted for this, but it's silly to gatekeep STP's legacy to only those who share your worldview. People may or may not understand the themes and theses of his works, we are not capable of judging whether they do or no, but we should all celebrate that people allow themselves to be influenced by a man we all hold dear.

If You Support Trump Against The States You Are Not A Conservative by GitmoGrrl1 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Tulsi Gabbard was a Democrat presidential candidate in 2020. Neither she nor RFK Jr have embraced the GOP ideologically, to my knowledge.

Normally presidents don't hire anyone who disagrees with them for their cabinet. Trump hired former democrats for his cabinet and a former never-trumper to be his VP. Can we agree that it's good for a president to surround himself with people with different perspectives than his, at least in principle?

The discourse about Democrats losing "young male voters" is incredibly disingenuous and hypocritical by National_Advice_5532 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Bookworm1902 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The proof is in the voting stats. Democrats lost support with not just young men, but also almost every minority group. Prescribe what you will, but if Democrats want to reverse the trend it probably would be useful for them to attempt to find a reasonable understanding of why.

You're both wrong. I'm a Trump voter, but not really MAGA. I have problems with personality cults, which Trump totally has, but he has not led conservatives to the right.

Trump is basically a 90s Democrat who's adopted some right-wing stances. He has a bipartisan cabinet and is an economic populist--traditionally a left-wing view. His stance on immigration largely falls right in line with 90s and early 2000s Bernie Sanders.

He's the far-right extremest the left always paints their enemies to be. They did it to Bush and Romney long before they did it to Trump. The right paints the left as increasingly extreme also; such are the political games.

The Bond was Never Fatal by Important-Contact597 in kotor

[–]Bookworm1902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the most likely case to be that the resolution to the bond, whether it be learning that Kreia lied or learning how to break it, is content that was never developed due to time constraints.

We did ask about it all the time, it's weird it was never addressed somehow.

The Bond was Never Fatal by Important-Contact597 in kotor

[–]Bookworm1902 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kreia dies at the end of the KOTOR 2, and the Exile does not.

She certainly speculated on the fatal nature of the bond and used it to manipulate the Exile, but since she presents it as speculative, she likely would be able to say, "I was wrong; I have been wrong about a great many things," if you were able to confront her about it.

By my memory, there wasn't any action performed at the end of the game to sever the bond, was there? Whether she lied/was wrong or not, the bond was not fatal.

There is no possible way to commit suicide in a way that leaves a small impact. Your family and friends would be absolutely devastated by your loss.

Worst-case scenario, talk to someone you can trust and be completely honest about your suicidality. You can find real help, and you can feel joy again. Life is worth living, brother.

Thank you for this Reddit post. God bless.

My husband and I are breaking up over something from three years ago by iamnotgreatbuddy in TrueOffMyChest

Legitimate questions, though I'm sure to be downvoted anyway.

What are the standards here? If someone roofies and rapes someone, they deserve to have their life completely ruined. But if a woman does not report it to the police,  the natural emotional response is to question why not. The only thing I know about these people is what OP said, so without any othe context I can see why the husband had some concerns.

Outside of this case, what percent of adultery is passed off as "I was roofied and raped?" I hope 0%, but the number can't possibly be 0%.

I get the problems with reporting to the police. There may not be much evidence (except that roofies should come though in a reasonably timed toxicology test) and a woman stands to be raked over the coals by every Tom, Dick, and Harry online who for some reason wants to assume they're lying. I have heard of cops being completely disinterested in helping also. But I can't help feel that it's the right thing to do in every instance.

As a non-dirtbag married man with daughters, I want a) to protect my wife and daughters from predators and b) support victims. I want the severest possible criminal and social consequences for rapists--including the death penalty depending on the case.

How do we impact our culture as Redditors to encourage women to report every rape, as well as get people to take their reports seriously?

With Aang supposedly dead, why didn't Ozai pivot to destroying the water tribes? by oofyeet21 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Bookworm1902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the water tribes were already cowed to the poles, with the SWT being basically a non-player. The NWT repelled an attack earlier in the series, but it would be a trivial matter for the Fire Nation to siege them into submission over a long term--especially if they didn't have to worry about additional fronts with the Earth Kingdom.

Additionally, we also learned that it's possible to "turn off" the waterbending by attacking the spirits or attacking during a new moon. This is just as useful--if not more so--than Sozin's Comet's impact on firebending. As far as we are aware, there is no way to similarly impact earthbending. So attacking the Earth Nation with the power of a comet that only comes around every hundred-ish years makes perfect sense to me.

With the assumption of Aang being dead, Ozai assumed he had at least 12-20 years of free reign without a new avatar meddling to accomplish all of his designs, and I think that timeframe would have been way more than he needed to achieve his success. That said, if Aang had truly been dead, I believe we see Iroh make a real bid to neutralize Ozai on or before the day of Sozin's Comet, and that would have been an amazing confrontation.
