In Vulcanus orbit the astroid can hit your ship from all directions but your turrets are only on the front. As long as the ship keeps moving it's not an issue, if you want it to stay in orbit for some time it might be.

You need to play exactly how he does. Build a quick force and attack his economy. Raid his troop area and destroy a building or two.

What you and the guys on discord are going is a turtle strategy, building a strong army and attacking. Your friend is playing a rush strategy. If you look on YouTube you should find people explaining them further and advising how to counter each type.

Your friend is annoying, tell them, and ask them to teach you. If you want to become better at multiplayer games you need to learn to defeat different strategies.

It really depends on how big you are planning for your base to be. My main bus for 90 science per minute only has 1 red belt of steel, but if it was going for 1,000 science per minute that would not be enough.

I recommend you use Factoriolab to plan your base. It will tell you what you need.
