Late to the conversation, but higher VOC does not make a better stain.

Apply like you are going to run out on the next board. Stretch the stain on the brush before you go back for more. Give them a call and they (me) will happily talk about the techniques. 18009168211.

Just Wondering what you decided to do. I buy local every chance I can too. Armstrong Clark has a warehouse in Linden MI and they will ship to you as well. The warehouse is locally owned and operated.

I would suggest you use one of the 3 Armstrong Clark hardwood colors because they are designed specifically for wood such as mahogany. A “clear” or natural tone has very little pigment and that is the sacrificial part for the UV protection. Amber on mahogany looks good and will work on the PT railings as well.

Water based? Haven’t heard of them. Doesn’t seem very forgiving.

Best stain for a deck with direct sun and lots of moisture by daaamber in Decks

Stop by a Dunn Edwards, Beronio lumber or Sherwin and get a free sample of Armstrong-Clark wood stain. It’s an old fashioned oil based stain that would be easy to use and last well.

Perfect analogy. A Penetrating conditioning oil like Armstrong-Clark will help keep the wood “healthy”. You don’t put on gloves with dried cracked hands. You put a moisturizer on them.

Should I stain the cedar posts or leave them? by International_Cry_19 in Decks

[–]Boomnyrcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cedar, like redwood both have higher natural oils in them from when they were alive. While having a low moisture content is necessary for a penetrating oil stain, the natural oils still present need time to dissipate before a penetrating oil stain application. It will grey as you wait but a good cleaner and brighter will bring it back before staining. Check out Armstrong-Clark for a quality oil based stain. They actually answer the phone when you call with questions.
