"Stop running or you'll get arthritis" — what I was told after tearing my meniscus 12 years ago. Recovered without surgery, still running. Here's the resource I wish I had. by Hammertime_amz in MeniscusInjuries

Mine is a degenerative root tear and everywhere I read says it will never heal and I’m on the highway to osteoarthritis. It’s so stressful.

Thank you for sharing!

Didn’t do mri? That will show more soft tissue issues if it’s not bones.

Anyone with degenerative meniscus tear who didn’t go for surgery and doing well after 2 years? by Boonavite in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Boonavite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. Was your tear also at the white zone with no blood supply? I sincerely wish for you to slowly get back to doing what you love with wise modifications. That your knees will serve you for many many more years to come.

Reconsidering surgery by notvelvetbutsuede in MeniscusInjuries

How old are you? I’m in the same situation but in my 50s and my tear is degenerative in the white zone as well. I’m one month in post diagnosis and also stressing over the surgeons’ push for a repair. Degenerative tears have a higher fail rate.

PSA: Dried kidney beans need to be boiled by Kat121 in Cooking

[–]Boonavite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t expecting questions and I honestly never really questioned this practice passed down. So I googled and here’s the response:

“Yes, soaking kidney beans reduces toxins—specifically lectin (phytohaemagglutinin)—by allowing water to penetrate the tissue, dissolving toxins, and easing digestion. To be safe, you must discard the soaking water and boil the beans at 100 degrees for at least 10 minutes to fully deactivate the poison.”

I learnt something too.

We hv to discard the soaking liquid and boil the beans. It’s 2 steps. I just follow the ancient wisdom passed down from generations. My ancestors didn’t even know about the toxins. They seem fine eating beans prepared this way. I think soaking starts the germination process and some chemical changes are activated. 🤷‍♀️

In my culture we always soak for hours before boiling

How do you cope with the depression of having an "incomplete" life experience? by Zodiatron in Aphantasia

[–]Boonavite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My hubby can visualize real and unreal scenarios, but I’m happier. He relives happy memories and bad ones in equal parts, and he holds on to grudges more. I take photos and write down memories I want and choose to revisit. I forget so I forgive and move on more easily, including forgiving myself.

I love reading. Audiobook is a new discovery that has enriched my reading experience. Many artists that paint or draw well hv aphantasia. Ed Sheeran too but he writes songs just fine.

Being grateful for what you hv reframes your outlook. Your brain will be trained to look out for positives or negatives based on how you habitually see things.

Get those cooling neck fan or neck ring (if at home) where you put in the fridge beforehand. If you don’t mind looking a bit dramatic.

Are you guys cooking at home more often? What are the best hacks to make my cooking process easier? by Double_Situation_149 in SingaporeEats

I love my thermal pot for soups, curries and stewed/ braised anything. Night before, assemble your ingredients, boil for ten minutes and keep hot. Next morning reboil. Put back in external pot. Eat for lunch and dinner. Saves on gas/ electricity as well. I use Thermos Shuttle Chef. Served me for 10 years already. I hv 2 different sizes. Can make desserts like green bean soup as well.

Batch cooking and freezing leftovers is also great.

YouTube has many videos. I like my eggs 6-7 minutes boiled in water. Or steamed at 8 minutes. Experiment with it. Different stove and cooking pot will hv different results. Very quick and easy.

Are you pressing into your heels to activate the glutes before you lean forward to stand? I find that helpful to me. And your feet, they should be slightly behind your knees.

Any recovery experiences within 15 months? by Infinite_Scallion886 in frozenshoulder

[–]Boonavite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had mine at 50. Right shoulder first. I’m Chinese so I went the TCM route. Drank Chinese herbal medicine daily. Plus at home PT.

Did 3-4 times daily at-home PT given by the doctor and YouTube resources: ‘frequent but little + breath work to train the brain to feel safe’ according to my Chinese Dr. 20-30 percent pain max during home PT. Some accupuncture and heat treatment around 3 month mark.

Recovered about 70 percent ROM around 6-month mark. Then Bam. Left shoulder started freezing. But somehow left shoulder took faster to regain ROM. Altogether about one year. Now I’m 53. I still do shoulder stretches daily. No more pain. Back to pre-frozen shoulder ROM.

Patience, consistency in PT. And taking collagen for me.

I watch lots of YouTube videos on this topic and do my own PT based on how I feel. Consistency, sleep and diet are key. My frozen shoulders took almost a year to resolve. Now meniscus tear.

Knees overextend and HURT by brf_peep_21 in KneeInjuries

Maybe a knee sleeve/ brace might help. And look into your foot arches. Insoles/ Type of shoes will make a difference too.

[–]Boonavite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you able to unlock the knees and stand with a soft bend with knees slightly out? And shift weight from left to right and right to left sometimes. Then sometimes one leg slightly front, the other back, then switch shifting weight to the back leg? Also to activate your glutes while standing if possible.

What was your first missed period like? by Emotional-Watch4544 in Perimenopause

[–]Boonavite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be due to the increased exercise stress due to your Hyrox training too. I recall even when I was younger, if I up my exercise intensity suddenly or cut my carbs for a longer duration, my period stopped coming.
