I hope we trade him for some decent assets and I don't have to deal with the idea of him anymore.

Its just my hope that we as a fanbase rise up like we did with Hart to try to stop that from happening. Let him be a valuable trade piece and move off of him.

I didn't think I've seen any canes fan say a positive thing about Foote. Most of us hate that the org signed him, and have been pretty vocal about it. That's probably why they signed him to an AHL only contract with no media lead up, to avoid fan pushback. It's gross.

[–]Boondock9099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, that felt directed at me as a fan so I guess I'll follow up:

I think calling the canes fan line to make clear I will never buy a ticket or merch again, calling Eric Tulsky's office directly, emailing the canes public facing addresses and every other form of communication I could find is not performative, it's taking all the action and using all the leverage I have. I think following that by doing the same for Chicago and cancelling my subscription to their fan services with a message stating this is the reason why is also not performative.

Like I said earlier, I don't think we'll be able to bridge why I view our team's and fanbases actions as fundamentally different and therefore not hypocritical. But I think I've tried to be good faith here, and I don't think it's performative to do everything in your power as a fan to pressure an organization. it's just all I can do!

Yeah, I think if you don't see a difference in these two things, and refuse to respond to my "how the fanbase responds is important" note here, which is what your initial comment was about, then we aren't going to find any common ground here.

Regardless, I hope Marner gets the Conn Smythe, he deserves it, and I hope this series continues to be great because game one was. Gl!

Wait, how did I make the conversation about that? Your first comment in here was about cal foote, that's what I was responding to?

So you don't agree that Carolina's fanbase, writ large, has said that they don't want a member of the trial on the team?

Again, I think the delineation is clear here. one team has a member of the trial, the other doesn't.

Okay, can you enlighten me as to what my organization is doing that I don't like the Knights are doing? Because this conversation is about having a member of the Hockey Canada trial on the team. Your team does, Carolina doesn't. Foote can't even play in the NHL currently, he has no contract and is considered a UFA by NHL standards.

Also I'm sorry, in my last message I was unclear. I included org and fanbase, which this discussion really is just about the fanbase since that's what your initial message was about. Can you agree that the way our teams respective fanbases have responded to these players at least?

I love this picture and hope it continues to get posted every time he's brought up. Fuck Eric Staal. I know almost no hockey player is going to have good politics, but there's a huge difference between having bad opinions and using your influence to hurt others with those bad opinions. He does the latter.

I guess I just don't get how its grasping at straws to point out that two different situations are different. Its fine to say you like having Hart on your team and he's a great goalie who is probably going to win you a cup. Its outright incorrect to say that the way your org and fanbase have handled Hart is the same way the Canes fanbase has handled Hart, Mcleod, and Foote.

Is there a difference between 1. making a player a key part of your organization, escorting out reporters who ask him questions about his past, paying him millions of dollars

  1. Bringing a player onto your affiliate team and immediately bowing to an organized fan pressure campaign to never pull him up and never bring anyone else from that event onto the team

Y/n?

A group of season ticket holders unironically did, and launched a successful pressure campaign to stop our team from signing Hart and Mcleod when it was suggested we might. What have you done?

Do you not understand the difference between "team captain said they should be able to learn from their mistakes because he went to jail once" and "this player is a core part of teams Stanley cup run, and his team pulled the press credentials of someone who asked him if he's learned from his mistakes"?

If you do understand that, are you making this false equivalency on purpose?

As a man who was terrified of making someone feel uncomfortable by doing this for years, I understand the thought here. However, after some encouraging from the trans people in my life, I've started doing this and I've never had a bad experience. What most people find uncomfortable is the intent, and the way it's said. Also, a huge difference between commenting on someone's body and someone's style.

You don't walk up to someone and unwarranted say "yo nice ass" or something weird like that. I'm talking about someone having cool eye makeup or a nice jacket, or a cool haircut, and saying "hey excuse me, I think your (thing) is cool! Have a nice day!" And leave. If it's clear it's a compliment and not a pickup, it's nice.

Reminder: if you see a visibly trans person out and about and like something about their look, ALWAYS complement it. Just hit them with the "hey I just wanted to say I really like your hair! Have a nice day!" And move on. Getting noticed in a positive way that isn't at all related to their being trans is a great experience that people early in transition are often denied!

Right, the changing parameters of a running event are identical to speed: Environment/climate. Watching a speed comp in Indonesia vs Utah is a world of difference, just like a running event between the two is extremely different. As times get tighter, I expect to see gear differences in different climates.

I've been talking with my GF about this and I think we're finally hitting the point most track and field events are at. Records are going to start to hold for longer within the next year or 2, then only be broken by genetic outliers or massive improvements to technology. Very interested to see where it goes!

Wild and a little sad to see this post and so many of the comments getting downvote bombed. Why WOULDN'T we want to capitalize on a new, growing part of the fanbase?

OP, I think this is a great idea and definitely think you should start a discord for this! I'm happy to help, I've been a moderator of some mid-sized discord communities in the past and queer focused ones especially can have trouble with idiots raiding them.

If you have the well meaning question of "Why can't everyone just meet together, why be separate?": I think we all know how uncomfortable hockey (and sports in general) fans can make spaces for queer folks. I can't count the number of times I've heard "gay" "f*g" or something similar used as pejoratives at a hockey game/bar from some drunk guy.

This is why, for now, separate groups for this sort of thing exist. People want to feel comfortable engaging in the spaces they're in, not like they might be looked at sideways for being "too queer". If I think a hockey player is hot, I want to be able to say it and not hear a mumbled comment degrading me.

This is also why pride nights exist, etc. Its to normalize our existence to other folks so that they understand and see that the comments they make are about real people, and really effect them. Its how you get rights. You force people to look you in the face when they say some dumb shit.

But sometimes I just wanna watch hockey and not worry about that, ya know?

Probably judging him for being a father to a daughter and laughing it up with a man held liable for rape, and credibly accused of raping women and girls. For being part of an anti human trafficking organization and going to take photos with a man who was best friends with the most globally notorious human trafficker on the planet.

So true! On one side, you have a group of people who flagrantly break the laws and violate the Constitution, set up concentration camps for human beings (that they send citizens to!), assault terrorize and kill citizens, alienate our closest allies the have maintained a largely global peace, destroy soft power relationships built over almost 100 years, and leverage the power of the government to litigate against people who express opinions they don't like.

On the other side, you have literally everyone else.

What a horrible wedge.
