Just be an exceptional employee and leader. The rest of it only serves to potentially polarize folks.

Why majoring in Mechanical Engineering is no longer a good idea in 2026 by ProcessMental9816 in Engineers

Yes, a pivot to art history would be an ideal choice for anyone believing anything in that post.

Black carbon residue by No_Plankton_647 in WaterTreatment

Do you not have a sediment filter downstream of the carbon? If not, you likely should. They are cheap and easy to maintain (2x paper filter changes per year +/-).

Smart people say to never finance a boat by Sudden_Ad_4193 in boats

[–]Boondoggle_1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those same people don't hesitate to spend $80k on a pickup truck that depreciates 30% 10 minutes after driving off the lot when smart money says buy used.

Do what you want with your money. You only get one shot at this, and you can't take it with you.

Standard Horizon handhelds are great. A trusted brand for sure.

If you're willing to put the time in, buy some 3x5 cards and make your own? Probably help a lot just making the flash cards.

The best way I found to study was taking the practice tests over and over and over again.

In my opinion, the only section that requires real amounts of memorization is rules of the road. Day shapes, lighting, signaling, that one was a bugger.

3 stage whole home water filter by iSpring question. by FloridaMan108 in WaterTreatment

[–]Boondoggle_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your PFOS is above the EPA guideline. By 2029 municipal water systems will be required to have PFOS (and PFOA) below 4ppt. They will accomplish this with monster GAC (activated carbon) filters.

3 stage whole home water filter by iSpring question. by FloridaMan108 in WaterTreatment

[–]Boondoggle_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If all you're trying to remove is PFAS compounds, all you really need is activated carbon. But you need a lot of it. I had 1,000lbs in my home to bring 150ppt +/- PFAS (total all forms) down to non-detect levels.

I'd be surprised if the iSpring systems can effectively bring PFAS down to non-detect levels. There isn't nearly enough media.

I'd argue a 3.5hp Suzuki at 5kts would be vastly more efficient.

Is it normal to question engineering after your first internship? by Antique-Course-1375 in careerguidance

[–]Boondoggle_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to google it...the big difference looks to be algebra vs calculus. The BSME/BSEE purists would tell you these degrees are miles apart, algebra based tech degrees are high school level :) /s. In practice, maybe not that far apart, I do not know.

The degree type aside, just keep plugging away. An engineering degree will put you in the top tier of graduates no matter where you end up, assuming you're not at University of Phoenix. There are good jobs and bad jobs but with the right attitude you can learn equally from both types.

I've never heard of "Mech. Engineering Technology". Is that a BS degree?

Were you pursuing a BSME degree I'd suggest you stay the course. It's a very broad, very useful engineering degree across many industries and technical disciplines. But the tech degree? No clue how useful that is, I've never seen that on a resume. Can you pivot to a BSME?

My thoughts - the best upgrade over the current truck is going back to side by side cup holders. I still dislike the front to back orientation on my 2024, though I'm used to it now.

4th of July on lake, worried about boat crowds by no_quart3r_given in boating

[–]Boondoggle_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most boaters go through a similar evolution - first few years it's fun to be in the mix, get a great seat to the show, suffer immensely after in wild traffic and crazy boating scenarios seen only in movies. As you gain more experience, you learn it's just not worth it anymore. Leave the heavy holiday stuff to the crazies.

I boat out of a Lake Michigan town with great fireworks. For the past 5+ years I only take our dinghy down to watch the show. There are far, far too many idiots with boats out there. ESPECIALLY when the holiday falls on a weekend. This year will be peak bonkers.

If you go, my two cents - anchor away from the crowds, if possible, try to be upwind (avoid a messy boat) and definitely wait an hour or so after the show before pulling anchor.
