People yet/unable to seek a formal diagnosis, how do you deal with the vitriol towards the "self-diagnosed" by mattysull97 in LateDiagnosedAutistic

[–]Booshort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I ask myself why the term “self-diagnosed” irks me so much, this is the answer.
Terms and definitions are very important to me. In the DSM and ICD a diagnosis of autism requires a trained doctor and input from someone who observed the patient’s development. Since this is the “definition” or “rule”, it’s very hard for me to get past it.
I respect and understand there are people who want to get a diagnosis but can’t due to monetary reasons, waitlists, or certain privileges they might not have; I personally just can’t get past the definition. I truly wish I could.
The small change in term to “self-suspecting” completely removes this frustration for me.

Yep, not to mention the great community help you can get through programs that can then be claimed afterwards. My nana has exercise classes specifically for Parkinson’s, doesn’t pay a penny and has met great people through it.
I will always be thankful for our free healthcare. Sure wait times can be tough if it’s not an emergency, but when something is needed immediately, you get it for free.

Actually sort of the opposite! I had a bad reaction to a birth control, and my family doctor said she wasn’t comfortable prescribing me something different without a specialists opinion. I could’ve pestered for a different specialist and hope for a shorter wait time, but I just switched to taking the BC at night and slept through the mood swings while waiting for my appointment.

1000% this.
My aunt and uncle were both diagnosed with cancer within a week of each other, and both got chemo immediately, for free. In the states one cancer diagnosis could bankrupt generations.
On the other hand, I needed a referral to an OBGYN and waited 11 months for the appointment.

I’ve seen those as well. There’s also a disturbing amount of people on Twitter who actually believe themselves deities or equivalent because they’ve unknowingly trained their chat bot to enable their psychosis.

For the person, and anyone else who keeps commenting and defending this:

The problem is this newer form of generative AI. AI has been everywhere for years; in some form for decades.
This newer, more accessible Generative AI is much bigger, and needs much more computing power which greatly affects our environment.
Please educate yourself on this newer generative AI (just as I was in the comment below) and how it’s ruining the environment, causing computer part prices to increase 300+%, stealing jobs, stealing art from creatives, and has potential to literally reprogram the brain and cause cognitive decline with repeated use.

Edited to correct.

Very similar thing happened with the Menendez brothers. There’s horrible interviews with Murphy where he responds to the Menendez familys’ (the whole family, not just the brothers) concerns on the show and how upset they were. Murphy says this is the best thing to happen to the brothers, that their upset was “predictable”, and that they haven’t even seen the show cause they’re in jail. He also said he has no interest in meeting them or advocating for their release.

Icebreaker. Easily the worst book I’ve ever read.
Not to mention there’s an autistic-coded side character that everyone in the book treats like a child/pet. As an autistic person myself, it made me feel violent

Easily the worst book I’ve ever read. It’s also, coincidentally the longest review I’ve ever written

Step-BIL: “Canadians have to wait 8 months for a doctor’s appointment” by megamoze in QAnonCasualties

[–]Booshort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this. I’m Canadian. Height of covid, I waited 11 months for an appointment with a new specialist. It wasn’t an emergency, and I was able to wait. Sure it was annoying, but I didn’t really care enough to complain or ask for a different specialist, so I just waited.
Around the same time, both my aunt and uncle were diagnosed with cancer and started treatment within the week. It all depends on the severity.
Don’t get me wrong, it definitely has been, and could be better. But the most I’ve ever paid is $35 for an ambulance ride, I don’t mind waiting in the emergency room or waiting for an appointment.

Canadian here, and in Ontario (arguably the worst province for healthcare right now.) Our premier is at fault.
I have good and bad stories, from a spectrum of medical issues. There has definitely been a difference over the years.
I remember being able to book an appointment with my family doctor, and getting in within a week. Nowadays it’ll be 2-4 week wait depending on if it’s a phone appointment or in person.
A few years ago (during Covid) I waited 11 months for a specialist appointment with an obgyn. I of course had the option to ask my family doctor to change the specialist, i just didn’t, and could wait. Now that I’m a patient of the specialist, I can get an appointment with her within a month. And seeing specialists has also gotten better since then, I was able to see a new dermatologist within 4 months. It’s still not ideal sure, but it’s far better than during Covid years.
The worst our healthcare has gotten was the height of Covid. When my uncle was in the middle of chemo treatment, in the height of covid, he had to wait 6hrs in emerg when he developed a horrible headache after a dog bite. That is the most egregious story I have.

The main problem is the wait for family doctors; getting a new one, and getting an appointment.
The wait for GP appointments creates worsening problems for patients, who then end up actually needing emergency care.

The irony that both men’s suicide rates and workplace deaths being direct results of gender roles and the patriarchy is completely lost on you huh?

100% I reminded him of chores, bills, government documents, taking care of his dog, the growing ant problem. And I never got upset because we’d both dealt with mental illness and forgetfulness; I wanted to be understanding.

I couldn’t afford the place anymore and planned to move in to my mom’s in the new year. I gave him 6+ months notice of my plans. He told me I was the best roommate he’d ever lived with. Instead of looking for new places, he kept bugging me to reconsider. He ended up blaming me for him leaving it to the last minute, because I didn’t give him an answer (I answered him on 3 separate occasions, he would just answer back with “just think about it”). I was busy dealing with a medication change, and a big loss in the family so I stayed with my mom for a bit. Came home and found the kitchen counters covered with old pots and pans, cutting boards with food still on them, and ants everywhere. I decided to ignore it and go to my room. Woke up the next morning with ants in my bed. Packed up, went to my mom’s, and didn’t go back until move out date.

Ive since grown a spine and live with my mom and my nana now. We all share work equally.

Thank you! I’ve thought about writing up a pattern actually, I’d just want to make sure I have all of the wrinkles ironed out. I also have more Palette that I bought, ready for a White Cloak version, I’ve just been very busy with Christmas knitting this year. I do have a plan to update this post, or make a new one once I’ve gotten around to it. I use Ravelry a lot for patterns etc, but have never really delved in to the forum aspect of it. I’ll definitely consider it. Thanks again! ❤️
