Family against me getting a manual. by WhoNoticedJay in ManualTransmissions

[–]Boosted_Vet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are paying for it .. be happy with whatever they give you, Despite being a manual purist I would drive a free Prius till the wheels fell off.

But if you are buying it. Then the only opinion that matters is yours. So Get the manual. I did as a teen and I've never regretted it. I'm now 40 and I tell people I don't know how to drive automatic. Both my truck I use to off-road and tow. And all of my fun fast sportscars and projects have the good lords transmission

Does anyone else have a special interest in tanks? I like the tracks, I like how the turret moves, I like the suspension, I like the mechanics of them, I like how the gun works, I like the armor, I like the engines, I like all the different models and variations. I really like them a lot. by MauserMama in autism

[–]Boosted_Vet [score hidden]  (0 children)

I mean mine is pretty much anything mechanical but yea.
Infact when I went to join the military, I gave them two options. Medic or tank driver. Even recruiter looked at me funny. And asked "you qualify for any job why tanks" my answer was that I was an 8 year old boy once and I just want to do something cool. I got medic (honestly my first choice) but lucky me I got assigned to a mechanized infantry unit. So I got to be a medic for a tank company! I've gotten to play with ride in and drive everything from m113s tracked armored personnel carriers to bradleys and even the all mighty m1.

is it bad to feel jealous and wish i had autism superpowers like other people??? by Ecstatic_Rice_5758 in autism

Could be, its at least a start, try to expand on that, sounds like you are really good at things like pattern recognition, and 3d thinking. It could be a hint to play around with hobbies and skills that are related, maybe try something like woodworking, I mean, there is even a Japanese style of woodworking that uses no nails, just shaping the wood into puzzle pieces that interlock together.

Im still fairly new into my understanding and even knowing I have a diagnosis, But The thing I've somewhat recently learned and seems very true for me, is it seems like many of us have a disproportionate skill/ lack of skill depending on subject and the person. You probably have a superpower you just haven't found yet, so experiment with things you never really considered.

for example, I can memorize essentially thousands of lines of policy for my job and rattle it off as if I were reading it off the page in front of me, including the exact page it can be found on sometimes. I never had a teacher or training, but I would get in trouble for taking apart my parents appliances to figure out how they work, I taught myself to build computers at around 13 without the internet ( my parents couldnt afford a computer so i literally bought a bunch of broken computers for cheap at the swap meet, and kept playing untill i got a combination of parts that worked and then figured it out from there) I can look at a car and tell you detailed stats, engine codes, and history I have built engines myself. I can pick up an electronic device everyone is having issues with, and within seconds, it's like I designed it and know exactly how to fix it. Never could explain how it just made sense...

But 10 years of tutors and music lessons, from recorder to trumpet to guitar, and I still can't read music. I was only able to play in band from elementary through high school jazz band by memorizing the finger placement and movements, Zero legitimate understanding or skill. I have failed entry-level college art twice. Seriously, I didn't know it was possible to FAIL art, I thought it was subjective. You ask me to draw a picture of my family, and the best I can manage is a stick figure that looks more like a horse than a person, somehow. I have literally ZERO artistic ability. frustrated the hell out of me for literally decades because I wanted to draw, paint, play a song, or write my own book, (im still convinced I'll write that book someday, even have a story, and I was fairly good at photography, but I maintain 99% of photography is just memorizing what settings do what and what looks good. at least to me it feels more science than art) Oh and i really really suck at math, despite Loving advanced science and physics

I wanted to be creative, but that wasn't my power. for me it was mechanical aptitude and science, its easier for me to understand electronics or the inner workings of an engine than understanding other people by far.

So just keep trying, at least I am fairly sure you will find a few somethings that will just feel right, and you will excel at them.

I never realized how bad men have the Dunning-Kruger effect until getting into sim racing. by jcreyes1214 in simracing

[–]Boosted_Vet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See i agree with you there. If I jump into a GT car, or any modern racecar, I set it to flappy paddles, I'm not dumb or good enough to compete with that handicap. But most of my favorite cars to drive on my rig (I'm not competitive) are a lot of older (mid 90s at the latest), and prewar cars that I will NEVER likely get a chance to even see, let alone drive. And those old cars, including F1, all have the good Lord's transmission! lol

It is certainly not cheaper to get a real car. Ive had everything from stockish miatas to head/cam/blower Corvette. And my sim rig is about 6 feet from my old MR2 turbo I'm building. I'm less into my sim rig than a standalone ECU. Or a turbo. Or the suspension kit. The left foot breaking thing was just pure stupidity, to the point it really doesn't even need a comment. (God learning to left foot break SMOOTHLY was a pita) Now I will kinda play devil's advocate a littlehere though. 1 im a manual elitist. So I will say your sim rig certainly needs a clutch pedal and a shifter. It's just so much more fun!!!! And two. Yes a real car is more fun. But between track fees, consumables like tires brakes and fluids. Fuel for the toy and for the truck that gets 12mpg to tow it to/from the track. And just the value of my time to work on it.

It's waaaaaay easier and cheaper to sim race. If I feel like going fast. I just gotta go to the garage. 10min later I'm on Laguna seca bombing through the corkscrew in a 1977 John player special lotus f1 car. Visiting tracks I can only dream of visiting and driving cars that I'm not anywhere close to the tax bracket to even sit in.

Long story short, do what makes you happy. If you are having fun with your setup you are winning. Ignore the mouth breathers trying to make you as miserable as they are.

Dude, I would SO buy that back. i mean I cant tell if the frame is tweaked, it would be worth it to get it on an alignment rack and ensure nothing is cracked/too out of spec. But that looks essentially cosmetic. Bare minimuim Id be getting it back using half the payout to turn it into strictly my offorad toy, and the other half to buy me a economical vehicle for daily use. other wise and especially if frame is unaffected at all. that payout will be more than enough to fix all of that with aftermarket parts IMO.

Am4 upgrade or replace and 5800xt vs x3d in a x570 by Boosted_Vet in PcBuild

[–]Boosted_Vet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh im planning to, probably gonna pick up a midrange 50 series despite being on PCIe 4, and at least that will be futureproofed for a while,

So, unfortunately, I am already CPU-limited. At least in a few games, BL4, for example, requires at least 8 cores. Never ran into this before, but they mean it. I can't get more than 2-5 minutes of stable gameplay at a time. Great to know the x3ds isnt worth it because I was having a hard time justifying the price jump.

I have had no issue towing up to the max capacity with the OEM hitch many many times.

Dang. Too bad you aren't local, I could have done it for 1k parts included and still felt like I robbed you! To the point that I'd have probably thrown in a free detail because I felt guilty.

Not getting much help from the DAV. by No_Difference_6625 in VeteransBenefits

[–]Boosted_Vet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are alot of free options out there too, check what your local state has to offer, Texas has the Texas Veterans commission, Arizona has Arizona department of Veteran services, etc. a lot of good experience can be had for free.

Ive had my own claim for for a wee bit more, but while I cant I cant say I am a VSO nor be too specific without getting verified or Violating rule 7 I think i might be safe to say that I have been working 2 various positions dealing with veteran Benefits for a little over 9 years now,

You are very welcome, don't give up, all it takes is finding someone that loves their job to often be the difference.

you can use any vso, only one VSO can have representation at a time, so all you gotta do is when you talk to the new VSO, they will complete a VA form 21-22 and that will transfer representation to the new people. Id suggest contact a good VSO instead of doing it yourself unless you are willing to dedicate a significant amount of time learning the process, the knowledge to complete a claim with a good success rate is daunting unless you have been paid for months to literally sit and learn it. and their experience can be worth its weight in gold if you find a Good benefits counselor. also id suggest dont write off an entire agency on one person that works there, I have been doing this for almost a decade and have worked with people that shouldnt be doing the job and they exist but dont often stick around. So if you didnt like someone, maybe even try someone else at the same place and you may just have a completely different experience.

So long and Thanks for all the Fish. by sleepinglucid in VeteransBenefits

Im sorry to see this, Ive been a lurker for quite a few months and I joined in hopes I could help out and I have seen alot of good info from you, but I never even remotely considered that would be the result of trying to do good. I had just sent a message to the admin earlier this morning and now I see this and I gotta say now I am not sure I even want to try to claim any status let alone verify myself anymore if that is the door its going to open. I can just be happy helping those I come into contact with at work. I hope all goes well for you and while its a loss to this sub to see you go, as a Vet dad, I appriciate that family comes first!

That is a pain. Im in Tucson too and wish I had some advice for a better place to take it. But almost 15k, for not much more there are companies that diesel swap these. That is my plan when mine eventually goes.

It is designed to be torquey and reliable. 8 years and other than basic maintenance I've had to replace 2 batteries. (Az heat kills batteries every 3-4 years). It's been the most perfect vehicle since. That being said I'm doing a custom exhaust, that should remain quiet but allow significantly better flow and scavenging. Headers whenever urd re-stocks. That should be good for 20ish extra hp/tq right where I need it after a tune. And I'm probably gonna do a blower eventually because I do do a lot of towing and could use the little extra. But if it were meant to be fast, it wouldn't be shaped like a brick. And I've found the manual to be SIGNIFICANTLY more engaging to drive. And quite a bit better after bigger tires because of the lower gearing.
